Well, it looks like the curse is broken. The theory goes that the odd-numbered installments of the Star Trek franchise are significantly worse than their even-numbered brethren. Of course, the original Trekkie theorists never factored the skills of director J.J. Abrams into the equation. Before you can shout “ye canne change the laws of physics”, this, the 11th picture in the series, has broken free of all superstitions and given us one of the most electrifying space operas the genre has ever seen. In the interest of full disclosure, I should state that I am only a casual Star Trek fan.

My knowledge of creator Gene Roddenberry’s universe is limited to the 10 feature films and not the vast back catalogue of the various television series. However, I am a fan of science-fiction, space battles, time travel, extra-terrestrial life-forms, intergalactic mining ships, robotic patrol cops and sexy green alien ladies, which, thankfully, are all featured in this Star Trek: The newer generation.

Star Trek begins with one of the most spectacular space battles ever committed to film. An enormous, calamari-looking Romulan ship emerges from what seems like a giant thundercloud in the middle of space, led by the intense Captain Nero (a show-stopping Eric Bana). Nero forces the U.S.S Kelvin to surrender the one known as Spock, although they might be a couple decades early. As the Kelvin valiantly, and hopelessly fights back, the captain evacuates his wife and newly born son, but not before giving him a name: James T. Kirk.

Jump forward 20 years to Starfleet Academy 90210, with rebellious young dropout Kirk (Chris Pine) hitting, unsuccessfully on vivacious language specialist Uhura (Zoe Saldana). After getting into a scrap with some of graduates, Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) of the U.S.S Enterprise dares Kirk to re-enlist, and do better than his deceased father. No extra marks for guessing what he decides to do. Kirk makes quite an impression at the Academy; especially on the half-human/half-Vulcan Spock (Zachary Quinto). Seems it’s not quite friends-at-first-sight. You can expect that eventually all the characters we know and love will find their way aboard the Enterprise. You can also expect that Nero won't be far behind.

As you would expect, a significant portion of time is spent (re)introducing beloved characters like Bones (Karl Urban), Chekhov (Anton Yelchin), Sulu (John Cho) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). Thankfully, Abrams doesn’t go the cute route, getting on with the space-action as quickly as possible. The cast are perfectly capable of arousing the fans excitement based on their own performances. Pine is as close to capturing the essence of William Shatner’s iconic performance without mirroring it too closely. Urban and Pegg give faithful recreations of Bones and Scotty, and are sure to emerge as fan favourites (once again). Sadly, Yelchin, Cho and Saldana aren’t really given much to work with here. But hey, that’s what sequels are for. Only Quinto seems to struggle; trying to find the balance between emotion and extreme logic and not really succeeding at either.

Abrams has emerged as one of the premier action directors currently working today. The film is full of brilliant action set-pieces; some funny, some haunting, all riveting. The cinematography is also jaw-dropping. I cannot remember the last time space looked so vast; full of endless possibilities, both terrifying and hopeful. Set to Michael Giachhino’s beautiful, nostalgic score, seeing The Enterprise traverse Abrams’ cosmos might be the closest a Trekkie gets to a religious experience. I honestly cannot imagine any other blockbuster of the American summer toppling Star Trek as the most enjoyable popcorn flick of ’09.

4.5/5

Skipped through most of it. Too long and I actually didn't like any of the characters, unlike the original. And no, I was never a fan.

If you are a fan of the original, do yourself a big favour and give this one a miss. Terrible storyline, terrible acting, it wasn't camp and it wasn't fun. Convinced me that the only person who should ever play Kirk is Shatner. Very disappointing. I can only imagine Gene Roddenberry turning in his grave.

Good ScIfI movie. Loved it.. but as somebody who have seen a lot of StarTrek I will have to say this is a big disappointed. Yes it has all the familiar names and shapes, colours and sounds of a startrek movie.. However certain things happen in this movie that would be just not done in real startrek world so to speak.. It would go against all the prime directives of the federation.. Yes we could be watching some sort of alter timeline or maybe it some sort o start of a new Startrek series that is going to explain it all.. or maybe not.. For now I would say great Scifi but they totally missed the spirit of Star Trek.

I would be very surprised if the late creator the tv series or the original cast from television didn't like this movie. It is a direct homage to those episodes and characters that so many have come to love and enjoy. The movie starts on a superb note and the you get taken for a ride that almost equals some of the episodes from the Star Wars saga. The special effects are first class and the enemy is no slouch to be taken lightly, it's very entertaining and has some of that classic Star Trek humour. Not to be missed!

Space, the final frontier... this is the voyage of J.J.Abrams, his on-going mission, to find new and undiscovered treckers, to give life to old fans and a slow dying franchise... and to boldly do what no other producer could do before! Logic would dictate that you cannot hate Star Trek until you have actually seen this fantastic movie... if you dont like it stop using your phone, bluetooth headset, computer and basically all technology with a microprocesser (there might be one in your milk carton) as all the original fans of the 60's show created these things based on the ideas they got from the show. (see how william shatner changed the world - on dvd).

Gives some knowing winks to the fans and pays homage to the originals without imitating them, while still appropriate for this non-Trekkie whose only knowledge of the franchise comes from pop culture. Just don't think too hard about the plot (it doesn't make that much sense), and try not to cringe at Eric Bana in prosthetics attempting to look aggrieved and villainous.

If your a star trek fan you will love this movie, if your not you will be after this, I rate this highly on my list of star trek titles both for its ability to keep you in your seat as well as adding little bits and pieces to the original story that were not there before.

An excellent film that is to be highly commended for the tremendous performances of Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine and Ben Cross. The eleventh Star Trek takes it back to the beginning of the 2258 'five year mission' but with the twist of having an entirely non-canonical plot that refreshes a series of movies which were becoming stale. The film sees Kirk, Spock and CAPTAIN Pike battle Romulans who have travelled back through time to destroy planets of the Federation using vaunted 'Red Matter.' This film deserves a fair go, as it cannot be fairly compared to the old series. For the acting and revamping the series, I'd give it five stars.

When on the platform Looking over did anybody else have the sensation or fear of Falling I sure as hell did and I have never suffered from Vertigo in my life. This movie depicts what all movies should be all about, GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.

Absolutely fantastic! I couldn't fault this film at all. Fast paced and brilliantly edited there is no room for breathing as the plot unfolds. It cleverly harks back to the old series while at the same time constructing a new timeline for this rebooted version. Zachary Quinto IS Spock and Chris Pine does pouty misunderstood Kirk well. A triumph!

When I started watching this, I thought there aren't many sci-fi films around these days. Maybe they are costly to make or just don't work that well. I had heard good things about Star Trek and it didn't let me down. A really enjoyable sci-fi action film. There are a few Star Trek cliches thrown in, and I found myself predicting them before they happened, but it was all in good fun. The characters are great, the action non-stop and the special effects are first class. A terrific movie.

I have been a Trekkie for about 35 years, and began to watch with a good deal of scepicism. Overall I would have to say it was a good film. It is set just before Kirk gets the Enterprise, but in typical(?) Star Trek fashion it had to find a spot for Leonard Nimoy as an aged Spok alongside the young spok. If you are a fan of Star Trek you should find this version more than acceptable. If you like science fiction you should really like it. 3 and a half stars

You don't need to be a previous Star Trek fan or a Sci-Fi fan to enjoy this film. It's like Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica put together to form an incredible and interesting concept of the reality of life and how space voyage is an act of peace keeping. An excellent quality film, it had a mind boggling story, the CGI effects were amazing, its an easy film to watch and just simply, a great adventure story to learn about the future and other Intelligent species.
