It's South Africa, 1990. Two major events are about to happen: the release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, its Spud's first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. Spud (Troye Sivan) is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Initiated into the Crazy 8 and surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home. Through all his adventures, Spud's eccentric English teacher The Guv (John Cleese), introduces him to great literature and despite his own failing marriage, offers Spud relationship advice.

Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes us from illegal night swimming and schoolboy pranks to the red-hot furnace of the rugby field and cricket pitch. He also invites us into the mind of a boy struggling to come to terms with a strange new world, a boy whose eyes are being opened to love, friendship and complete insanity.

Cute boys coming of age movie. It was light and easy to watch. I did laugh out loud a couple of times and John Cleese played an understated role. It showed that being a kid and growing up is hard no matter where you live.

Didn't like the bullying even though the final outcome, end of the year, made a turnaround. I know it exists but dosent make it right in the real world or in a movie. wHY DO WE HAVE TO PROVE OURSELVES??????????? However well acted. Loved the music.

What a wonderful surprise! Touching, funny and insightful. John Cleese was outstanding, but Troy Sivan who played the lead role was amazing as a young man in his first year at an all boys boarding school. We watch him begin to grow into a young man, and how the peer pressure from the other boys and the young ladies in his life influenced him. Fantastic movie - thank you.

Nothing new here, just a Mr Chips type re-hash, but very underwhelming and predictable. One of hundreds of coming of age stories but this one is pretty ho-hum and lacks guts. John Cleese must have been glad to put this one to bed. Try "Submarine" if you want something intelligent in this genre.

My 15 yo daughter's favourite movie (and book/s - she's not a reader normally). My partner and I enjoyed it too. Excellent acting.

Fabulous movie about a year in a boys' boarding school for a 13-year-old runt of a kid. While it might be South Africa in 1990, it could easily have been a school in England a century earlier. There are no mobile phones or computers to be seen. Oddly there is little evidence of South African accents, either. The story covers the tribulations of a kid who's bullied to an extent, but still joins in the antics of his adolescent room-mates, discovers classic books and hot girls, and learns about the joys and sorrows of life. John Cleese is wonderful in his role, and hasn't done nearly enough movies in his career, but he explains why in the Q&A session on the DVD.
