Mature themes, violence and drug use

Director: Salim Akil
Actors: Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks, Mike Epps, Derek Luke, Carmen Ejogo

Sparkle is a timeless story of the bonds of family, the trials of success and the power of music. In her feature film debut, American Idol sensation Jordin Sparks stars as Sparkle, a young woman whose big dreams seem almost impossible. She’s been warned against the pitfalls of the music industry by her protective mother (Whitney Houston), yet encouraged by the handsome and ambitious Stix, Sparkle forms a trio with her sisters. Together, they perform the soul-stirring songs that Sparkle pens. But as their fame grows, so does the risk of jealousy, self-doubt and insidious temptation.

I enjoyed this movie but would have enjoyed it more if the DVD hadn't frozen and gone out of sync 2/3rds of the way thru. I's not the first time a quifklix dvd has played up for me. The last time it did I threatened to end my subscription. If it happens again I won't hesitate. It's just not worth the angst!

I enjoyed it but it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen

I thought this movie was great for a Sunday night curled up on the couch. Yes, the dialogue is a bit so-so at times but the songs certainly make up for it.

Sad but true, unfortunately drug addiction and domestic violence happens all the time. The drug addiction side of it is reminiscent of the late Whitney Houston, who ironically stars as the mother in this film trying to stop her daughters from getting into the entertainment industry.

Formula movie, girl from wrong side of tracks heads for the big time with a few dramas along the way. Perhaps more for the teen crowd. Did a lot of fast forwarding.

Usually really enjoy this kind of movie but found this quite plodding, nothing new. Sadly Whitney Houston lip-synched her songs. There are way better movies of this genre around.

If you wish to see a film about music and becoming a star then stick with the sapphires and dreamgirls as the are in a different and better league than this movie. And if you want to remember Whitney Houston as the great star she was then watch The Bodyguard as sparkle offers a thankless role for her.
