Sparkle is a timeless story of the bonds of family, the trials of success and the power of music. In her feature film debut, American Idol sensation Jordin Sparks stars as Sparkle, a young woman whose big dreams seem almost impossible. She’s been warned against the pitfalls of the music industry by her protective mother (Whitney Houston), yet encouraged by the handsome and ambitious Stix, Sparkle forms a trio with her sisters. Together, they perform the soul-stirring songs that Sparkle pens. But as their fame grows, so does the risk of jealousy, self-doubt and insidious temptation.

Usually really enjoy this kind of movie but found this quite plodding, nothing new. Sadly Whitney Houston lip-synched her songs. There are way better movies of this genre around.

If you wish to see a film about music and becoming a star then stick with the sapphires and dreamgirls as the are in a different and better league than this movie. And if you want to remember Whitney Houston as the great star she was then watch The Bodyguard as sparkle offers a thankless role for her.
