Science fiction themes, violence and infrequent coarse language

Director: Duncan Jones
Actors: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright

Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes with a jolt to find himself on a commuter train heading into Chicago. Although the other passengers all seem to know him, he has absolutely no idea where, or even who, he is. The last thing Colter remembers is flying a helicopter mission in Iraq, but here he is in someone else's life going through someone else's morning commute. Before he can do anything, an express train zooms by on the opposite track and a bomb explodes, seemingly killing Colter and all the other passengers. Colter awakes in an isolation chamber, strapped to a seat, and wearing his military flight suit. He still has no idea what's happening, except that he's being spoken to by mission controller Carol Goodwin (Vera Farmiga), who calmly asks him, "Who planted the bomb?" He learns he's a part of a secret operation called "Beleaguered Castle," but before he can progress any further, Goodwin starts up the machinery and suddenly Colter is back on the train, at exactly the same time he first appeared there, once again speeding through Chicago with the same group of commuters and once again after eight minutes the bomb explodes. Each time he doesn't solve the mystery, he is taken back to re-live the same eight minutes. Living the explosion over and over, Colter must uncover the identity of the bomber, while also figuring out what the alternative universe of "Beleaguered Castle" is.

Source Code is about a man sent back through time, into a parallel universe, as another person. I think. Maybe. You’ll have to bear with me as I decipher the goings on of Duncan Jones’ latest mindbender. Let me get this out of the way early: it’s quite good. Perhaps that’s all you need to know before going in. Source Code is an enjoyable Hitchcockian thriller with a unique sense of humour that will serve Jones well; it is proof the young director is ready to handle cerebral blockbusters just like fellow Londoner Christopher Nolan. Do all the threads of his sci-fi universe come together? Almost. Does the final twist make any sense? It makes enough sense. Could you say the same about Nolan’s similar Inception? Definitely, and although Jones’ flick is less ambitious, it’s an hour shorter and handles exposition far better. If you care to tumble down the rabbit hole further, read on.

The film opens with a man awakening on a train. His name is … well, we’ll get to that in a second. He’s played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and as far as he’s concerned, he is Captain Colter Stevens, a fighter-pilot whose last memory is of his helicopter being shot down over Afghanistan. The beautiful woman (Michelle Monaghan) sitting opposite him on the train begs to differ; she reminds him that he is really Sean Fentress, a mild-mannered high school teacher. Needless to say, he freaks out (especially when he goes to the bathroom and sees another face, presumably Sean’s, in the mirror). Before he can be calmed down, the train explodes. Are you still with me? Good, because this is just the first five minutes of the film.

Stevens wakes up (again) in a mysterious capsule, where he is informed via video screen by Captain Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) that he is in “the source code”. It’s a confidential program – established by the heavily-goateed Dr. Rutledge (Jeffrey Wright) – that allows certain applicants the ability to enter the mind of a freshly-dead body for the last eight minutes of their life. Sean Fentress is one of those brand spanking new corpses, having been victim to a terrorist attack on a train in Chicago earlier that morning. Stevens has been sent into Fentress’ mind/body so that he may find out the person responsible for planting the bomb, and preventing an even more devastating attack. Back he goes, again and again; soon his apprehension and confusion melts away, and Stevens takes advantage of his Groundhog Day scenario to act like a charming Bond-esque secret agent in a seemingly consequence-free universe.

Jones and screenwriter Ben Ripley have added a healthy heaping of Alfred Hitchcock and stirred in some Rod Serling to their tale of a fallen soldier with a bizarre case of mistaken identity (North by Northwest meets Johnny Got His Gun, anyone?). The fact that the movie takes place on a train - one of Hitch’s favourite cinematic haunts - and features a cameo from Quantum Leap’s own universe-skipping star Scott Bakula cannot be a coincidence, nor can we discount Chris P. Bacon’s Bernard Herrmann-esque score. Jones is definitely giving a shout-out to his childhood inspirations, which is fine, so long as it doesn’t get in the way of his making a good movie. Too often these cinematic “tributes” end up an ungodly mess (for instance, Faster hilariously thought it was a modern remake of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, much to its own detriment). Source Code, thankfully, is a success.

Most impressive is the way Jones and Ripley trust their audience enough to withhold information during the film’s first half hour, and instead drip out relevant pieces of info only when it is essential for us to know (for an example of how not to relay exposition, please see paragraphs two and three of this review). It rewards the viewer for their attention and patience. Gyllenhaal is perfectly attuned to Jones’ sensibility (much like Sam Rockwell in Jones' excellent Moon before him); as the confused soldier, he must convey deep regret and mourning as well as mischievous joy throughout this adventure. Also excellent are Michelle Monaghan – who could make you fall in love with her in eight minutes (and still leave time to spare) – and Vera Farmiga – whose entire role has her sitting behind a desk, yet she still manages to hit every heartbreaking emotional beat as the woman tasked with breaking terrible news to Stevens time and time again. Jeffrey Wright fares worst. Here’s a talented character actor who has never overplayed a role in his life, until now. Frankly, he could have repeated his performance as Peoples Hernandez, the villain from 2000’s Shaft, and it would still be a subtler, more nuanced turn than his cartoon creation here.

The ending … won’t be discussed here, mainly because I’ve already revealed enough about the plot. Don’t worry; there are still plenty of surprises to be found in the film that I’ve not yet given away. The climactic twist (if it can be called that) won’t have people debating like Inception’s totem-spinning finale. Jones’ ending is however a cheeky tease just like Nolan’s. The end of Source Code doesn’t try to send us on a soul-searching mission to question identity, reality and the horrifying future of technological advancements (although you are welcome to do so of your own volition). It’s meant to be cool, and fun, and leave us wanting more. But I figure Jones’ will be too busy with even bigger projects in the next few years to offer the fans a second foray into the Source Code.

3.5/5

WOW. I mean, wow. What an awesome out-there sci-fi film! SO well done. Yep, for the first few minutes it's confusing as hell, but i think if you're a sci-fi fan, you'll start to add pieces together... and then it's a very enjoyable film. Has a sort of Ground Hog Day meets Memento feel. And good acting, nice score. I wish I owned this.... 5 stars! :)

Non-linear sort of movie (think alternative stories/ universe(s) as depicted in classic movies such as Ground Hog Day, Sliding Doors or Rashomon, etc.) The cinematography was not bad, for instance I liked the aerial views of Chicago at the very beginning, or a great "frozen scene" in the very last "8 minutes" block; the frozen scene matched very well the over all theme/character of the movie (time travel, loops in time, end of life moment, etc.). What I did not like was that whole silly romantic theme, how unlikely and cloyingly sweet, Michelle Monaghan is overacting, as if it was a sweet romantic comedy, annoying ending, as many people have already mentioned below. So, "sleek and shallow" is a good description of this flick, indeed. As for a concept of entering the thoughts of people 8 minutes before their sudden death, the thoughts would be about an exam they have next day at school, or a medical condition of their parents or just admiring views from the window of the train. They would not think about the content of their suitcases, etc. So, from logical point of view it is not convincing at all. Overall 3 and a half stars. Review by Simon Miraudo is available here (he also gave it 3.5 stars).

For some reason I enjoyed this a LOT more than Inception, which left me a bit cold...I think this one has a lot more warmth and heart to it. There's more appeal to a military man trying to do good and save the day, than someone involved in industrial espionage (which was what Inception was kind of about wasn't it? I don't know as I gave up caring 30 minutes into that film) This has a good cast and a fun way to while away a cozy autumn afternoon - silly, enjoyable plot with likeable characters. Nice to see that real talent runs in the family, Mr Duncan Jones (alias Zowie Bowie son of David Bowie)....

Very much a watered down version of Inception and in that sense it is very good. The film plays with your mind to a reasonable extent, but thrills you at the same time. With a film like this on his catalogue, Duncan Jones has shown the film industry that he is a new force to be reckoned with.

I liked it, BUT. The tension throughout was and the unravelling of the plot was hard to bear. The ending is almost a cop-out, given what is promised during the film. Despite this, what I did like was that the premise of this Sci-fi didn't over-exposition as a lot of Sci-fi films so, AND that the characters and relationships were developed well and were more important than the clever premise.

A very original plot with the same 8 minutes being lived over and over again by someone's who is supposed to be dead. The movie gradually reveals what is going on to the central character and thus to the audience. There is never a dull moment and the science fiction is reasonably convincing, just don't subject it to too much scrutiny. The characters are engaging, though are a bit stereotypical, but the film captures and maintains your attention. Well worth watching.

A very good film, my Husband particularly enjoyed it as did the teenage Grandsons. Fast action scenes but enough 'romance' to keep the ladies watching, you have to give it your full attention and don't expect a 'happy ever after ending' , cetainly a stand out performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it if you want a fast paced, action packed, thought provoking movie.

As the extras stated "Source Code" is like watching a scientific version of Groundhog Day, but don't let that put you off. The cast provide great performances. I found the story line engaging with lots of suspense, even at times when I was left wondering, "what is going on here?" If you are left at the end with any unanswered questions to what you have been watching, the extras besides being interesting, will make everything clearer for you.

Enjoyable movie. I thought it had a good story line, not believable but entertaining. It is fast paced and exciting. The movie goes over the same 8 minutes over and over and even though each 8 minutes is different and uncovers a bit more as to how to stop the bomb it started to get annoying. Definitely worth a watch.

Entertaining thriller from second-time director Duncan Jones. The film sets a brisk pace from the opening scene and keeps going for its reasonably short 100 minute running time. Some of the plot twists are a bit predictable and the ending will feel like a cop out for some - not me personally although I did feel it was emotionally different to the rest of the film. Jake Gyllenhaal is solid and likeable as an action hero, and Duncan Jones again showed his talent as a director. May he continue making more thoughtful sci-fi films!

Very exciting all the way through. I really enjoyed the development of the story and the build up of information for each of the realties. I thought the relationship with the girl on the train was not explored enough and did not have enough depth for him to fall in love with her. A little bit too fast there for me. I didn't think the whole premise of the source code theory was explained well enough.

A movie that stays interesting, intense, fast-paced, mentally challenging and basically nice. What's not to like? Only the somewhat illogical story, although being science fiction it probably doesn't need to make complete sense. In any case, the director assures us in the Extras that everything makes sense, even the ending. Although that has to be very dubious. The film borrows somewhat from other movies, but doesn't repeat those and is all the better for that.

I felt just as confused as the Actor Captain Stevens about the reasoning and positioning of the character, the story unfolds and more is explained to Captain Stevens as a bond grows between him and the lady on the other side of the monitor. The more attracted to Catherine (different lady) on the train, the more determined he is to find "who done it", its a romantic storyline together with some thriller bits rolled into a de ja vue and ground hog day with a modern twist at the end. I read the prior reviews that wern't too flash, but I enjoyed it and was glued to the screen to the end.

i am now totally over this genre. Same boring 'hollywood formula' that worked 30 years ago but is now so completely overdone & overrated it is ludicrous.Something original please................ one for the conditioned brainwashed/braindead generation to appreciate. They will undoubtably enjoy this & rave about it. To me it's a 'don't bother'

A lot better than I expected it to be. The use of parallel worlds instead of time travel removed the paradox plot hole most movies of this type suffer from (Deja Vu, ticking clock, etc) 3.5 stars

Didn't know what to expect here. But it turned out to be a interesting movie. For what is essentially the same scene over and over I really enjoyed the movie. Kind of Groundhog Day meets Deja Vu.

A nice piece of sci-fi. Touched on some aspects of parrellel universe but I feel that they could looked into the scientific aspects a little deeper. Made for the American market.
