Hell on Earth
by Simon Miraudo,

Few films can rightfully claim to offer its audience the opportunity to spend a couple hours in the bowels of hell, but Justin Kurzel might as well print up t-shirts saying as much to promote his feature film debut, Snowtown. It’s a grisly tale that brings to mind Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible, Gus Van Sant’s Elephant and Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs. I fear for the international viewers unfamiliar with the infamous Snowtown “barrel” murders that might go in expecting a Christmas-themed family romp (hmm, maybe Kurzel should get those shirts printed, to warn less discerning foreigners). The film is a great achievement in the sense that it depicts Australia’s most horrific series of killings in all their uncut glory, and will likely have viewers’ stomachs in knots (if not sending them to the bathroom to heave out the horrifying visuals they’ve just ingested). The picture is more concerned with the visceral experience; making us feel the events, rather than understand them. That’s both its chief accomplishment and its biggest failing.

Forgive me for referring to these true events as “plot” and these real life people as “characters”, but since we’re talking specifically about the film here – and it’s important to differentiate fact from fiction – it’s for the best. Snowtown begins with the pulsating score of Jed Kurzel and a disturbing monologue from young Jamie Vlassakis (Lucas Pittaway) in which he relates a bizarre dream about a Chihuahua. It is the most dialogue we’ll hear from him, and it’s fitting that his short speech is as perplexing, impenetrable, and oddly poetic as the rest of the film. Jamie lives with his mother Elizabeth (Louise Harris), as well as his younger siblings and abusive step-brother Troy (Anthony Groves) in an Adelaide suburb where the malaise is so pungent the community rallies together like members of a cult; plotting revenge - and dreaming of murder - against the sex offenders, child molesters, homosexuals and intellectually disabled fellow residents. In sweeps John Bunting (Daniel Henshall), seemingly out of nowhere; he institutes himself as godhead of the wannabe vigilante posse, and as a father figure to Jamie, except, instead of bonding by playing catch and building boxcar racers, he teaches him to hunt, torture, kill, and eventually dismember specially selected victims.

Although the killings - and the storing of bodies in barrels – do not occur until the film’s last hour, all 120 minutes are equally difficult to watch. Scenes of child pornography, rape and brutal animal slaughter comprise the pic’s first “lighter” half. Kurzel expertly handles the tension; cinematographer Adam Arkapaw has a unique eye for the beauty in suburban ugliness; Shaun Grant’s screenplay has a real sense of place. Best of all is the virtuoso climax; perhaps the best and most intense flurry of demented, indelible imagery since Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream. All of these elements combine to create a rare cinematic experience: a film that creates a universe that seems so different to our own, yet so similar at the same time; it plunges us into a world that we can’t bear to imagine is real, yet, most terrifyingly of all, absolutely is. It is based entirely on events that have already come to pass, just around the corner, only a few years ago, and perpetrated by people that are still alive. Snowtown is hell on Earth.

That primal, guttural filmmaking comes at the cost of characterisation. Although the performances – particularly Henshall’s – are top notch, I can’t help but feel that we don’t really get to know who these people are. I get the environment; I just don’t get the characters. Many of them emerge fully-formed, and don’t change an iota over the course of the film. The charming, murderous ringleader John Bunting is a force of nature; every other character merely reacts to him. Perhaps that is how it really was, but it doesn’t exactly make these people particularly interesting. Compare it to Animal Kingdom (as thousands will no doubt do); the characters there evolved and affected one another, and power relationships shifted. Not so here. It’s a tricky balancing act depicting murderers in film – if you make them seem too human, or not human enough, and explain away their motives, it can accidentally pardon them in the eyes of the viewer. Although I don’t feel as if that could ever happen with John Bunting, Kurzel and Grant don’t risk a thing by keeping us, emotionally, at arm’s length from our protagonists. Snowtown takes us to hell, but we never really get to meet the devil.

4/5

Should have been rated R. Not a bad movie, just very confronting. I turned it off part way though. Do not watch it with your kids unless you want them to see a fat man's penis (with no warning) as he goes to sit in a chair. A lot of adult themes including taking pics of young kids and shooting a dog because he wants to shoot a gun. I don't know why this movie isn't R18 . I turned it off just before the dog was shot.

Perfectly filmed and directed. The drawn out scenes and "boring" background gives such a true sense of what life is like in these margianalised, low soci economic areas. It was uncomfortable and repulsive to watch but I felt I needed to see it through to the end to really understand the extent of the misery and pain inflicted and how it impacted on so many lives (and still does). I have worked in child protection for many years in this very suburb and surrounding suburbs where these events took place and I can tell you, they got the family dynamics, vulnerability and dysfunction spot on

The acting was great. However the movie itself was disjointed and very hard to follow. It was a huge disappointment and let down. Don't waste your time. If you want to find out about the "Snowtown" Murders, read the wikipedia article or read the books that are written on it. This movie hardly showed anything about what really happened in the case. My 17 year old sister got so bored with it, she went and did homework instead.

Story was a bit hard to follow at times and was hard to understand what people were saying (a lot of mumbling). I guess the point was to see how easily 'normal' people can be dragged into quite horrific situations. Scary to think that this all happened just a few years ago.

This movie is basically torture - but this is basically the point. The film mixes the banal and the horrendous with tremendous effect. I have to say I think the genre label - "Drama,Thriller" - is a bit misleading. I'd say you'd have to be a psychopathic sadist to get any "thrills" outta this one.

It was overly long and had little in the way of meaningful dialogue while some of the scenes gave you the impression that you were watching a poorly captured video of improv night at a homeless shelter. It's a shocker: Watch a movie you love again or read a book. This is two hours of your life you don't back.

A psychopathic pervert draws those around him into his evil world. A gritty study of a murderer whose influence is so malignant that he comes across as far worse than those he accuses. A pretty stunning movie based on a true story that is helped by the authentic surroundings and the use of non professional actors..

Absolutely incredible. If you don't like slow paced films then this is not for you. The film casts a spell on you from the first frame and doesn't let go at any point. Incredibly accurate and honest portrayal of the lower class / dole-bludging suburban community. The last shot of the film has stayed with me since watching it several months ago. Proves that unconventional art driven Australian films can work superbly if done right. Recommended to anyone who enjoys an emotive experience, with a strong stomach and lengthy attention span. 5/5.

We don't really need to watch such graphic scenes of violence and inhumanity. I wish I read the synopsis properly before I ordered this movie. Couldn't watch it all and for days after I was quite disturbed by the graphic detail, which was from a true event in Northern suburbs of Adelaide. I wanted to be sick when I realized the story was real.

This is a brilliant movie. However, definitely don't bother getting the popcorn. If you are after easy entertainment, it is not for you. It is a very disturbing and very difficult to watch movie, especially knowing that it is based on a true story. It forces us to witness, in minute detail, the lives, minds and actions of people we would rather not know about. It is very very uncomfortable but highly compelling viewing. I imagine it would be nothing but extremely uncomfortable for those of us who would rather deny that such worlds of utter desolation exist just around the corner in our 'lucky country'.

The acting is brilliant and the movie is a gripping, grissly affair, so not for the faint hearted. Where it was let down for me was the beginning, where the relationships of the characters to each other were not clear and unfortunately that set the cement for the rest of the movie. I wanted to know who everyone was right from the beginning. The fact that "John" just appeared and took over running the family was off-putting and didn't make sense. Also, some of the dialogue was very hard to pick up. I know they are going for realism, but it counts for nothing if you can't understand what is happening.

Didn't really enjoy this movie. Quite slow moving, almost boring. I knew the basics about the storyline before watching the movie, but felt that I didn't really learn much more. More time was spent building up to the ending, the characters backgrounds, etc and I'd have preferred more violence, sounds funny to say that, but most of the violence, except for a few scenes is implied, and you just see the end results. Would have liked to see how the bodies were discovered, how they were arrested, instead of just some writing on the screen at the end.

Very confusing as the story jumps around a lot and, as many viewers previously mentioned, if you do not know the story of the bodies in the barrells then you would be totally lost. This is no "Wolf Creek." Most of the violence is implied rather than depicted. The start deals with the dysfunctional characters and the murders follow as they eliminate those they don't like or know too much. If you are from overseas and not familiar with the "bodies in the barrels" then this film would be hard to follow.

One of the best aussie films in years, almost perfect in its gritty bowel-searching of those who participated in the Snowtown murders and of their social and suburban values, occupations and relationships. My only complaints are, production wise, that the muttered dialogue was at times incomprehensible and in tems of characterisation the lead boy was so passive as to be almost beyond empathy.

I wanted to see the film because I love true stories. I liked it, but dont think it went into enough detail about the characters. You have to feel sorry for Jamie (the young boy) and his family being drawn into that situation. John Bunting is a disgusting, manipulating, parasite, similar to Ivan Milat, of which the two should not still be on this earth. The town is a very sad situation and I felt sad for all those people and their relatives & friends who were affected by these atrocities. It reminded me a little of "Deliverance". I would have liked to have seen the police investigation included in the film. Thought the acting was very good for people that were not well known.

This movie is made in a way that causes you to think, it doesn't give you the answers to why things happened or even how they happened really...we are left to fill in the blanks. This is a real eye opener to a whole different world which exsists within our communities, right under our noses, yet we either choose to ignore IT or are powerless to change it! It could have been more graphic and given away more of the sequence of events but I feel that wasnt the purpose of the movie. The crimes that took place at the hands of John Bunting were atrocious and to be honest I wouldn't want to see any more than the film showed...it was enough to show the reality of how disgusting this was and do justice to the victims but not enough to make us all sick.

Rather disappointing actually, to me it does not answer the questions as to why they did what they did nor does it cover the police investigation into the deaths of 11 people but is does show the great divide we have in this country where such a sorry event of this nature could and does happen, for me it was a let down after reading some great reviews.

Considering the final body count of this film, it's nowhere near as gruesome as you'd imagine, but it is disturbingly bleak. It's a moody study of Australia's worst serial killer gang and the grim world they inhabit - dysfunctional Adelaide housing trust suburbs poisoned with despair and drugs, sexual abuse and mental illness. There's not much dialogue beyond witless grunting but Shaun Grant's script is first-rate, backed up by superb photography and a haunting score. Not an easy film to watch, but totally compelling, intelligent filmmaking. A great achievement.

Horrible but brilliant demonstration of sad deprived existences on urban fringes, ignorant & aimless people leading drug and alcohol fuelled lives, susceptible to this evil man killing and torturing for kicks. The actor has the same expression as Ivan Milat - was this a co-incidence ?

so much less than I anticipated maybe because we all know the whole story .and I dont consider myself "lower class bunch" even average and well to do people get involved in all kinds of lifes waywards .. as mentioned by a previous review written here . my own kids were born into the same area unknown actors led to what could have been a major movie release it had too much of a home movie feel to keep me interested let alone enthralled at any level.. sadly disappointed ..

Very disturbing, but that's to be expected for a story about a lower class bunch of people that meet a serial killer. The story line wasn't always clear at times, so I think it could have been told alot better/clearer, but you certainly get the gist.

I watch movies for entertainment.....appreciate this really happened and there was a story to be told but I hated everything about this movie. Maybe my idea of entertainment is different to others, so that's okay. Each to his own.

Good Aussie flick, I had to watch it twice, the story is complicated and even if you've read up on it, its still complicated, I think that's why people rate it low, I liked it.

Chilling, dark, depressing story. Highly recommend to those who can handle such a subject, although one particular scene nearly saw me leave the room. Superbly acted and very well told. My measure of a good movie is one that leaves me still thinking about it several days later. This didn't disappoint.

Definitely a movie you need to concentrate on to watch. Bleak and disturbing - especially given that it really happened.

A pathetic attempt at making a movie. Acting was bad, virtually no story with most of the script centred around bad language and smoking. An all time shocker. regards, jivinivan

A very unpleasant movie to watch, but then what would you expect from a film about a serial killer? Disturbing.

Unfortunately I found this movie dull, weak acting & slow. Yes it is an Australian movie with unknown actors but im afraid even this didnt compel me to give it a better rating.

One of the saddest and most disturbing films I have ever seen. I'm predicting Lucas Pittaway (Jamie) will be the next Heath Ledger (in looks and in acting ability). Definitely worth the watch and I can't wait to see Lucas in his next flick.

Very disturbing movie, a bit slow but shows you through what actually happened with the Snowtown Barrel Murders. Actors played the roles very well. The killers were obvisouly sick in the mind. Not for children to watch at all. Felt sick at the end when I realised the actually dates occured as I only lived in the next suburb at the same time.

well.............. here's a first (that i know of). i think this is the first of this genre to come out of the land of oz. I actually found this a bit 'spooky' as it was based on a true story but moreover i know people today just like that motely crew in the movie, and they too are from adelaide.(scarey). The movie itself is quite noslalgic in that it is very 'down to earth' & realistic. Not overdone nor understated, i think just the right mix. NOT FOR THE FAINT-OF-HEART. But still highly recommended (don't let the kids watch)

Such an intense movie. Everything about it is intense. The acting, the locations, the soundtrack. A very heavy movie. Not a lot of gore. Just the implied violence and sound of deeds being done. Scary in the fact that these killers were real and could be your neighbour or the guy you strike up a conversation with at the pub or a shop. Even though it made me feel very drained from the two intense hours. The movie was well made and great acting.

I too saw this Film at the Cinema's in Adelaide actually, not showing much around Melbourne sadly. It is a powerful, gritty Film focussing on the atrocities of John Bunting and his gang of no-hopers. The sad, bleak landscape of Adelaide surburbia (Elizabeth?) and its cast of doubly bleak characters forces the viewer to watch in distaste at the actions of all those concerned; child pornography, racism, hypocrisy and boozey discussions around a table of neighbours and friends discussing ways in which to rid the community of deviants. John Bunting of course heading the discussion as he prances about indoctrinating all who care to listen. Daniel Henshall gives a powerful, brilliant performance worthy of an Oscar - the long mile stare, his smirky grin, control, manipulation and charisma shine through in his performance as this dark and complex character. Jamie too is portrayed with a vulnerability and innocence that leads the viewer to perhaps sympathise with his lot. It is inevitable that he will go down as much as Bunting and his crew without ever really fighting against it. True crime is much stranger and diabolicle than fiction and I thoroughly recommend this Film as an insight as to what actually happens "out there" in the pits of modern day surburbia.

Saw this film at the cinema at a free preview. About a third of patrons walked out. This is no film for the faint-hearted but it does paint a remarkable picture of Australian suburbia in all its terrifying glory. The cinematography was excellent and Henshall put in a sterling performance as John Bunting (Austalia's worst serial killer). Newcomer Lucas Pittaway was good as Jamie, the disaffected 16-year-old who has grown up with such violence and sexual abuse that it all seems inevitable...and normal. You can't help feeling some empathy for him, but not too much as Kurzel (director) keeps the characters slightly at arm's length. Kurzel spares us the more grisly scenes of horror perpetrated by the 4 killers (though there is certainly enough to turn your stomach) and the ending is enough to leave you with no doubt what will follow. I was shocked and awed by this spectacle but I was glad that I didn't walk out of the cinema into the night - that might have pushed my limits!
