Extremely disturbing. The John Bunting character is so well played - so menacing. Brilliant acting. Horrible part of Australia's history. Many, many disturbing scenes
Riveting and one of the scariest, most menacing films I have ever seen.
Just beautifully made. Gave a bigger insight into the charismatic ring-leader of this group. Outstanding film making, and outstanding actors.
Dark & depressing. Good strong movie but not one for when you need uplifting.
Should have been rated R. Not a bad movie, just very confronting. I turned it off part way though. Do not watch it with your kids unless you want them to see a fat man's penis (with no warning) as he goes to sit in a chair. A lot of adult themes including taking pics of young kids and shooting a dog because he wants to shoot a gun. I don't know why this movie isn't R18 . I turned it off just before the dog was shot.
Perfectly filmed and directed. The drawn out scenes and "boring" background gives such a true sense of what life is like in these margianalised, low soci economic areas. It was uncomfortable and repulsive to watch but I felt I needed to see it through to the end to really understand the extent of the misery and pain inflicted and how it impacted on so many lives (and still does). I have worked in child protection for many years in this very suburb and surrounding suburbs where these events took place and I can tell you, they got the family dynamics, vulnerability and dysfunction spot on
The acting was great. However the movie itself was disjointed and very hard to follow. It was a huge disappointment and let down. Don't waste your time. If you want to find out about the "Snowtown" Murders, read the wikipedia article or read the books that are written on it. This movie hardly showed anything about what really happened in the case.
My 17 year old sister got so bored with it, she went and did homework instead.
Story was a bit hard to follow at times and was hard to understand what people were saying (a lot of mumbling). I guess the point was to see how easily 'normal' people can be dragged into quite horrific situations. Scary to think that this all happened just a few years ago.
Mmmmm bit too graphic, turned it off half way. Not a badly made movie but just a bit too confronting on the murder scenes. Definately not for children.
a very gruesome story ,at times hard to watch
This was very sad & quite disturbing, But true & had to be told, im glad the movie was made to show what really happened to all these Victims. Its very confronting. These people were insane & should have been executed....oustanding acting.
This movie is basically torture - but this is basically the point.
The film mixes the banal and the horrendous with tremendous effect.
I have to say I think the genre label - "Drama,Thriller" - is a bit misleading.
I'd say you'd have to be a psychopathic sadist to get any "thrills" outta this one.
quite disturbing and depressing but great acting - not what I would watch for a fun afternoon!
Very hard movie to watch as it is based on a true story.
If you followed the true crime story when it happened you would have some idea of what to expect. I thought this was a very disturbing look into the mind of John Bunting. How could this be based on fact? Very chilling>
Marianna's review below says it all. Very disturbing and occasionally confusing, but fantastic acting.
It was overly long and had little in the way of meaningful dialogue while some of the scenes gave you the impression that you were watching a poorly captured video of improv night at a homeless shelter. It's a shocker: Watch a movie you love again or read a book. This is two hours of your life you don't back.
A psychopathic pervert draws those around him into his evil world. A gritty study of a murderer whose influence is so malignant that he comes across as far worse than those he accuses. A pretty stunning movie based on a true story that is helped by the authentic surroundings and the use of non professional actors..
this movie was brilliant - obviously disturbing considering the subject but the acting, directing etc so very good!!!!
Considering this was a true story I didn't like the movie at all. After watching 15mins of it, I watched the rest in fast forward mode.
Absolutely incredible. If you don't like slow paced films then this is not for you. The film casts a spell on you from the first frame and doesn't let go at any point. Incredibly accurate and honest portrayal of the lower class / dole-bludging suburban community. The last shot of the film has stayed with me since watching it several months ago. Proves that unconventional art driven Australian films can work superbly if done right.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys an emotive experience, with a strong stomach and lengthy attention span. 5/5.
Brilliant. Just brilliant in every way. Cinematography, screenplay, acting, directing.
very very depressing. while i appreciate the art and the acting, etc, i couldn't watch the film all the way through. it was about a really horrible thing and multiple really horrific people
Disturbing & well done but confusing at times....
We don't really need to watch such graphic scenes of violence and inhumanity. I wish I read the synopsis properly before I ordered this movie. Couldn't watch it all and for days after I was quite disturbed by the graphic detail, which was from a true event in Northern suburbs of Adelaide. I wanted to be sick when I realized the story was real.
Made me feel sick! Disgusting - probably because its a true story!!
Far too graphic for my husband and I. We returned it after only watching the first 15-20 minutes.
Graphically brutal. Not for the faint-hearted. Exceptionally well filmed and cast. This movie depicts everything that is wrong in modern society.
Such a disturbing movie, but so compelling. I could not relate to any of these characters, but couldn't stop watching them. Don't watch this before bed time, but if you think you can handle it, definitely watch it.
This is a brilliant movie. However, definitely don't bother getting the popcorn. If you are after easy entertainment, it is not for you. It is a very disturbing and very difficult to watch movie, especially knowing that it is based on a true story. It forces us to witness, in minute detail, the lives, minds and actions of people we would rather not know about. It is very very uncomfortable but highly compelling viewing. I imagine it would be nothing but extremely uncomfortable for those of us who would rather deny that such worlds of utter desolation exist just around the corner in our 'lucky country'.
every scene was dragged out eg. a car stops at a train crossing and you see the whole train pass which has nothing to do with story, jamie walks into the bank closeup of his face for 3 minutes etc. i watched this because of the real story i had seen on the news and expected torture, but not much at all, the only thing in movie that was disgusting was the first scene
One of the worst movies I have ever seen
Great acting really but what a disturbing movie. :(
Very poor and slow movie. Made me feek sick.
watched 20minutes & turned it off. What a waste of time.
disturbing and horrible- really bad cinema tics and acting also
The acting is brilliant and the movie is a gripping, grissly affair, so not for the faint hearted. Where it was let down for me was the beginning, where the relationships of the characters to each other were not clear and unfortunately that set the cement for the rest of the movie. I wanted to know who everyone was right from the beginning. The fact that "John" just appeared and took over running the family was off-putting and didn't make sense. Also, some of the dialogue was very hard to pick up. I know they are going for realism, but it counts for nothing if you can't understand what is happening.
Didn't really enjoy this movie. Quite slow moving, almost boring. I knew the basics about the storyline before watching the movie, but felt that I didn't really learn much more. More time was spent building up to the ending, the characters backgrounds, etc and I'd have preferred more violence, sounds funny to say that, but most of the violence, except for a few scenes is implied, and you just see the end results. Would have liked to see how the bodies were discovered, how they were arrested, instead of just some writing on the screen at the end.
Worst movie I have ever seen...for a movie that based on a true story - it seemed to have no direction, was slow and just didn't really hit the mark on any level...don't waste your time.
i did not order this dvd did i
Definitely a well made movie, but it really deserves a R rating. I have seen 'irreversible' but snowtown's themes and feelings it produces in the audience step to another level of horror.
Could not watch it all. Nothing redeemable about it. Nothing lyrical or beautiful. Just ugly, barren tale about murder.
Disturbing and haunting, especially as its based on a true story
Great movie, I think the point of view it was contructed from made it great - disturbing and thought provoking, as with the true story it was based on, not easy to forget
Very confusing as the story jumps around a lot and, as many viewers previously mentioned, if you do not know the story of the bodies in the barrells then you would be totally lost. Horrific, sad and quite sickening at the same time. Some acting was very good but overall VERY DEPRESSING. Not my recommendation for a good movie night.
This is no "Wolf Creek." Most of the violence is implied rather than depicted. The start deals with the dysfunctional characters and the murders follow as they eliminate those they don't like or know too much. If you are from overseas and not familiar with the "bodies in the barrels" then this film would be hard to follow.
Just really really disturbing... And slow- perhaps to add to the pensive mood of the movie. I think it tries to hard to be something it isn't- They focus too much upon a single scene and the story tends to get fragmented and confusing.
Could've been better. If you can, read up on the event before watching the movie, so many facts were left out and unexlpained. Impressive acting of a extreemely dark and disturbing true story.
One of the best aussie films in years, almost perfect in its gritty bowel-searching of those who participated in the Snowtown murders and of their social and suburban values, occupations and relationships. My only complaints are, production wise, that the muttered dialogue was at times incomprehensible and in tems of characterisation the lead boy was so passive as to be almost beyond empathy.
highly disturbing, thought provoking,confronting.
Fascinating, disturbing and sad all at once.
Very weird movie, if you didn't know the story of the Snowtown murders it would be hard to follow. The main actor looks a lot like Heath Ledger!
If you like true stories as I do, definitely one to watch but be prepared for a dark disturbing movie. Good acting and well directed. I found it a compelling movie and presents us with unfortunate people living lives of abuse and crime. A confronting story that leaves you wondering if we are doing enough to help others who for various reasons cannot help themselves.
Don't bother. I came away thinking the director was trying to do something 'arty' with this real murder story.
Would not recommend, well wriiten aand good acting but sad truth
A very graphic, confronting and disturbing film. I thought the acting was great because the characters really disturbed me - it felt very realistic. On another note I thought the storyline was missing key information so some parts were confusing / disjointed. Glad I have now watched to see what the fuss is about but would not watch again, felt quite sick afterwards!
Story confusing and not flowing. Also poor ending, If you want to see a film that is more graphic and more controversial I suggest you watch Once Were Warriors.
I live in SA and know the Snowtown story well, had I not been familiar with the facts I doubt I could have made head nor tail of it.
Sure it was disturbing but the story was also disjointed to the point of being unintelligible.
what a joke, waste of time, rubbish
Brilliant.Full of horror. Gripping.Sad. Actors not seen before. Not for children...follow with a coffee and a comedy movie before bed.
I wanted to see the film because I love true stories.
I liked it, but dont think it went into enough detail about the characters. You have to feel sorry for Jamie (the young boy) and his family being drawn into that situation. John Bunting is a disgusting, manipulating, parasite, similar to Ivan Milat, of which the two should not still be on this earth.
The town is a very sad situation and I felt sad for all those people and their relatives & friends who were affected by these atrocities. It reminded me a little of "Deliverance".
I would have liked to have seen the police investigation included in the film.
Thought the acting was very good for people that were not well known.
Quite slow. Not quite what I had expected. I didn't really find it interesting at all.
Difficult to watch and quite graphic in places, but explains the circumstances around the murders well, and the story from the view of the younger member of the group is interesting in how he was taken from bystander to active member.
I was mortified! Love a great crime movie, gore and whatnot - this was far from what I was expecting and find it hard to believe that it's rated 15 as the content is diturbing. Not cool, boring to boot and if I wasn''t waiting for something to happen to lift the movie I'd have turned it off.
Hard to work out who and where certain characters fit in therefore I found the story a bit confusing. I gave up half way through but my partner watched till the end. He gives it 2 stars.
WOW!! BRILLIANT acting!
Disturbing, and sickening, but what makes it more disturbing is that it's true.
Well done to all those involved in making the movie!
Aussies rule!
Top Aussie film. Very raw and confronting. Well directed and great first time cast.
Shocking & graphic - very realistic, acting brilliant!
i watched this and my tummy couldnt sit through the whole movie its not for the faint hearted it is full on and sick if you like this sort of movie go for it you not into to these sort of movies i say dont watch it
Horrible. Didn't like 1 bit. Depressing, slow and twisted. Could not watch more then 20 mins before I turned it off.
This was terrible, we didnt get past the first 20 mins
This is one of the most dark and disturbing films I have ever seen, this should be rated R, approach with caution, it is however an excellent film with a cats of unknowns.
I managed to watch it to the end but with lots of breaks and with the expectation that Police would knock on someones door. It never happened. This is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen and especially to think that people like that, given all their disadavantages, extreme weaknesses may in the same circumstances live amongst us! I would never see this movie again!!!
very bad boring australian film.
very frustrating and confusing movie. hard to figure out who people are and where they fit into the story. Couldn't even figure out who was alive or dead and no wiser at the end. May make sense id you've researched the events, otherwise don't don't bother.
Disturbing, didn't finish it and won't recommend it, I realise the subject isn't a fairytale but I believe the movie could've been so much better (eg, clearer, easier to follow)
Hated it...couldn't watch it right through due to violence.
How can you take a true story about murder, mayhem, and weird relationships, and turn it into a story that is so confusing and dull that it becomes a good sleeping aid? Answer - become an Australian Film Director! If you have not read about this murder case in the newspapers, then prepare to be confused!
Very slow and very real, made me feel uncomfortable and I had to turn away a couple of times. This movie is not for the squimish and certainly not for kids
Excellent acting, good flick, worth a watch
I rate this movie, although it was all true, as one of the most obnoxious I have ever witnessed, I would not recommend it to anyone.
quite in your face, in terms of violence and bloody. excellent acting, but awful story
Very violent, but so was the crime. I enjoyed it.
When 16 year-old Jamie begins a friendship with a charismatic man, his world becomes threatened by his loyalty and fear of his newfound father figure, John Bunting: Australia's most notorious serial killer. I had high expectations for this film reviews for this after the postive reviews upon its release. What a let down. Plods along at excruciating pace. The acting is second rate and the actor who played Bunting was miscast. This film wouldnt tie up Wolfs Creeks bootlaces. Weak
Pretty Disturbing.Loved it.
I was a little disappointed to be honest. It was very slow moving and it was a little hard to follow.
My husband and I found ourselves asking one another, "What ?" What happened there, Did I miss something because it seemed to jump from one sence to the next without really flowing into it, Alot of times it didn't make sense, even when it finshed, I still didn't know what it meant.
Worth a watch but just don't expect to much.
Oh so cruel, but OMG it took forever to get to any point at all.
This movie is so disturbing but just so necessary. Fantastic work!
Sensitive portrayal of an horrific time in a boy's life. Chilling theme. Fantastic acting and a really well-made well-told story.
This movie is made in a way that causes you to think, it doesn't give you the answers to why things happened or even how they happened really...we are left to fill in the blanks. This is a real eye opener to a whole different world which exsists within our communities, right under our noses, yet we either choose to ignore IT or are powerless to change it!
It could have been more graphic and given away more of the sequence of events but I feel that wasnt the purpose of the movie.
The crimes that took place at the hands of John Bunting were atrocious and to be honest I wouldn't want to see any more than the film showed...it was enough to show the reality of how disgusting this was and do justice to the victims but not enough to make us all sick.
Disgusting. Did not watch it after the sodomy scene in the kitchen!
Rather disappointing actually, to me it does not answer the questions as to why they did what they did nor does it cover the police investigation into the deaths of 11 people but is does show the great divide we have in this country where such a sorry event of this nature could and does happen, for me it was a let down after reading some great reviews.
Considering the final body count of this film, it's nowhere near as gruesome as you'd imagine, but it is disturbingly bleak. It's a moody study of Australia's worst serial killer gang and the grim world they inhabit - dysfunctional Adelaide housing trust suburbs poisoned with despair and drugs, sexual abuse and mental illness. There's not much dialogue beyond witless grunting but Shaun Grant's script is first-rate, backed up by superb photography and a haunting score. Not an easy film to watch, but totally compelling, intelligent filmmaking. A great achievement.
Horrible but brilliant demonstration of sad deprived existences on urban fringes, ignorant & aimless people leading drug and alcohol fuelled lives, susceptible to this evil man killing and torturing for kicks. The actor has the same expression as Ivan Milat - was this a co-incidence ?
Suspenseful story with an intereting POV
so much less than I anticipated maybe because we all know the whole story .and I dont consider myself "lower class bunch" even average and well to do people get involved in all kinds of lifes waywards .. as mentioned by a previous review written here . my own kids were born into the same area unknown actors led to what could have been a major movie release it had too much of a home movie feel to keep me interested let alone enthralled at any level.. sadly disappointed ..
Two words...graphic and disturbing
Very disturbing, but that's to be expected for a story about a lower class bunch of people that meet a serial killer. The story line wasn't always clear at times, so I think it could have been told alot better/clearer, but you certainly get the gist.
I watch movies for entertainment.....appreciate this really happened and there was a story to be told but I hated everything about this movie. Maybe my idea of entertainment is different to others, so that's okay. Each to his own.
anonymous Says
from someone how knew the some of the people who lost there lifes in this movie it does not do them justise so jamie was only 16 when he was brought into to this but one of his victoms was only 17 and half when they took his life what about some empathy for him and the rest of the victoms and there familys
Good Aussie flick, I had to watch it twice, the story is complicated and even if you've read up on it, its still complicated, I think that's why people rate it low, I liked it.
Chilling, dark, depressing story. Highly recommend to those who can handle such a subject, although one particular scene nearly saw me leave the room. Superbly acted and very well told. My measure of a good movie is one that leaves me still thinking about it several days later. This didn't disappoint.
Fantastic maovie. havent stopped raving about it. It seems all the more real to me though as i only live around the corner from where it happened!
Definitely a movie you need to concentrate on to watch. Bleak and disturbing - especially given that it really happened.
A pathetic attempt at making a movie. Acting was bad, virtually no story with most of the script centred around bad language and smoking. An all time shocker.
regards,
jivinivan
A very unpleasant movie to watch, but then what would you expect from a film about a serial killer? Disturbing.
Unfortunately I found this movie dull, weak acting & slow. Yes it is an Australian movie with unknown actors but im afraid even this didnt compel me to give it a better rating.
One of the saddest and most disturbing films I have ever seen.
I'm predicting Lucas Pittaway (Jamie) will be the next Heath Ledger (in looks and in acting ability). Definitely worth the watch and I can't wait to see Lucas in his next flick.
Very disturbing movie, a bit slow but shows you through what actually happened with the Snowtown Barrel Murders. Actors played the roles very well. The killers were obvisouly sick in the mind. Not for children to watch at all. Felt sick at the end when I realised the actually dates occured as I only lived in the next suburb at the same time.
Very bleak movie and is at times confronting and hard to watch
well.............. here's a first (that i know of). i think this is the first of this genre to come out of the land of oz. I actually found this a bit 'spooky' as it was based on a true story but moreover i know people today just like that motely crew in the movie, and they too are from adelaide.(scarey). The movie itself is quite noslalgic in that it is very 'down to earth' & realistic. Not overdone nor understated, i think just the right mix. NOT FOR THE FAINT-OF-HEART. But still highly recommended (don't let the kids watch)
solid and well made and performed, but dam if i cant watch another dark depressing australian movie.
Such an intense movie. Everything about it is intense. The acting, the locations, the soundtrack. A very heavy movie. Not a lot of gore. Just the implied violence and sound of deeds being done. Scary in the fact that these killers were real and could be your neighbour or the guy you strike up a conversation with at the pub or a shop. Even though it made me feel very drained from the two intense hours. The movie was well made and great acting.
I too saw this Film at the Cinema's in Adelaide actually, not showing much around Melbourne sadly. It is a powerful, gritty Film focussing on the atrocities of John Bunting and his gang of no-hopers. The sad, bleak landscape of Adelaide surburbia (Elizabeth?) and its cast of doubly bleak characters forces the viewer to watch in distaste at the actions of all those concerned; child pornography, racism, hypocrisy and boozey discussions around a table of neighbours and friends discussing ways in which to rid the community of deviants. John Bunting of course heading the discussion as he prances about indoctrinating all who care to listen. Daniel Henshall gives a powerful, brilliant performance worthy of an Oscar - the long mile stare, his smirky grin, control, manipulation and charisma shine through in his performance as this dark and complex character. Jamie too is portrayed with a vulnerability and innocence that leads the viewer to perhaps sympathise with his lot. It is inevitable that he will go down as much as Bunting and his crew without ever really fighting against it. True crime is much stranger and diabolicle than fiction and I thoroughly recommend this Film as an insight as to what actually happens "out there" in the pits of modern day surburbia.
Saw this film at the cinema at a free preview. About a third of patrons walked out. This is no film for the faint-hearted but it does paint a remarkable picture of Australian suburbia in all its terrifying glory. The cinematography was excellent and Henshall put in a sterling performance as John Bunting (Austalia's worst serial killer). Newcomer Lucas Pittaway was good as Jamie, the disaffected 16-year-old who has grown up with such violence and sexual abuse that it all seems inevitable...and normal. You can't help feeling some empathy for him, but not too much as Kurzel (director) keeps the characters slightly at arm's length. Kurzel spares us the more grisly scenes of horror perpetrated by the 4 killers (though there is certainly enough to turn your stomach) and the ending is enough to leave you with no doubt what will follow. I was shocked and awed by this spectacle but I was glad that I didn't walk out of the cinema into the night - that might have pushed my limits!
