In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

Rupert Sanders' revisionist adaptation of the Snow White saga takes its cues from two recent fantastical period pieces rather than the Grimm brothers' original legend: Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy and HBO's hit series Game of Thrones. If only it ever felt as grand as the former, or were as incest and decapitation laden as the latter. The gritty Snow White and the Huntsman is a flat, humourless affair, lifted only occasionally by the scenery chomping of Charlize Theron and the affable Chris Hemsworth. It also benefits from having truly enchanting special effects, and a tangible quality to the more mystical elements that was sorely lacking from producer Joe Roth's previous epic, Alice in Wonderland. But not all the cutesy wood sprites and grassy trolls in the world can bring this deathly dull screenplay back to life with true love's kiss.

Kristen Stewart portrays Snow White with the joie de vivre and fiery passion we have come to associate with all of her performances. That is to say, not much. Her Snow - supposedly the manifestation of life itself, and inevitably charged with rousing an army to battle Theron's evil Queen - doesn't even feel present for much of the flick; neither tortured nor troubled nor angered nor inspiring. Stewart is a fine actress, forced to fight an uphill battle in the Twilight saga and the interminable On the Road. Here, with little on the page to work with, her nervy, awkward demeanour is scarcely enough to make us root for such a personality-free cipher. She's supposed to have chemistry with the roguish Huntsman, though the three screenwriters (Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock, and Hossein Amini) can't even conjure for her a single witty retort, or saucy reply, or any interesting line of dialogue at all.

It seems redundant repeating the plot of the world's most famous fairy-tale, especially considering it's the second feature film retelling of it in 2012 alone (side note: I recommend Tarsem's nutso comedy Mirror Mirror before this). Nonetheless: Theron's man-hating Queen Ravenna has devoted herself to being eternally beautiful, sucking the life force out of the kingdom's womenfolk. Having done away with King Magnus (Noah Huntley), she banishes beautiful step-daughter Snow White to a tower, where she will stay until her coming of age. Before she can be sacrificed to the ravenous Queen, Snow escapes the clutches of Ravenna's brother Finn (Sam Spruell) and absconds to the dark forest. The drunken Huntsman (Hemsworth) is tasked with finding the little minx, and returning her to their clutches. Instead, he falls for Snow's charms (I guess), and helps her lead a rebellion. There's also a mirror, an apple, a stag, and a milk bath.

A bunch of fine British actors star as the eight dwarves (yes, eight). They include Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones, Nick Frost, Johnny Harris, Brian Gleeson, and Bob Hoskins as their leader. I'm not sure how the technological wizards worked their magic behind the scenes to shrink this octet, but they did a convincing job. Still, I much preferred the dwarves in Mirror Mirror, played by actual little people, each with their own distinct personality and flavour.

Sanders has a definite handle on the technical aspects, impressing with the battle sequences and Theron's shape-shifting sorceress (who frequently bursts into a flock of ravens, grows older and younger within the same scene, and at one point emerges from a pool of black goop). The mysterious woods are home to the best set-pieces, and feel substantial despite seeming totally otherworldly. The make-up is always convincing, and Colleen Atwood's costumes are gorgeous, and now I'm just listing the mechanical things I liked about the movie because little else about it is interesting and the emotional elements never satisfy.

At one point, a Twilight-style love triangle is alluded to with the introduction of Snow's childhood friend William (Sam Claflin). He too wants to rescue the damsel in distress, much to the Huntsman's chagrin. With the promise that this is but the first in a franchise, I sincerely hope that the central characters can have some spirit breathed into them before they return to the screen. And please, give Hemsworth something funny to say. He's a funny guy.

2.5/5

Production and effects visually stunning. A nice different twist on the story. Theron stunning. Can't make up my mind about Stewart as Snow White. I can see why she was cast but not sure she pulled it off. Hemsworth looked the part but seemed a bit wooden. Was ok I guess. Glad I watched it. See- mixed feelings lol

Excellent movie and story... Some say it was too violent, but the violence fit the story and era. Some complain that Snow White didn't smile, well he father was killed, her kingdom stolen, she was imprisoned for years, then on the run and constantly attacked, of course she's not going to smile... What's expected? ohh i'm being attacked, i'm so happy and should smile more. Oh look, my father is dead, i'm so happy, i must smile. The acting was very well done, although those of us who grew up with Chris Hemsworth might find his accent in the movie kind of wrong, but while he did it well, it's more the typecast thing than anything. I'd gladly buy the movie when i can as we all liked it very much. I would love to watch the 3d version before i decided which one to buy.

This...this was not good. Kristen Stewart as Snow White did not work. She is suppose to the more beautiful women in all the land. Yet she was barely more beautiful than 7 dwarfs with her emotionless persona. Very predictable storyline. No attachment to any of the characters. Turned off half way through my first viewing due to boredom. On my second watch, made myself watch the entire thing...got nothing from it.

Very enjoyable movie that inevitably draws you into the land of fairies, magic and fantasy, the age old contrast of evil and good. Great visual effects, story line easy to follow but definitely not recommended for the little'uns! Just that little bit too dark for what you usually associate with a version of Snow White.

While I'm not a fan of Stewart, she did a decent job with her role, though Theron,Hemsworth and Ray Winstone who I was pleasantly surprised to find in this film as I was unaware of his role in it,fared much better with their roles.Although slow and a bit predictable it was still an enjoyable film to watch. The costumes, scenery locations and overall fantasy of a classic story brought to screen is brilliant if a little dark. I do believe they could have done better with the storyline but overall a great movie that sort of reminds me of the Rammstein song Sonne a little bit. Would not recommend for kids but otherwise a good movie to watch.

How is Kristen Stewart "The fairest of them all", she looks constantly anemic and sleep deprived, not to mention the sticky-outy ears :) ! This was a hyped up movie that in some unexplainable way just never seemed to live up to it. You won't be missing much if you give this a miss.

Somewhat predictable and don't believe the hype, Kristen Stewart is completely devoid of personality in this film - as usual. It's also hard to believe she could be the most beautiful in all the land. Maybe if you only look at buck toothed wing nuts she is! Other problems - the music is pedestrian and cliche, and for some reason in this magical land Christianity is the prevailing religion. That's fine but it didn't really seem to serve a narrative (or other) purpose.

A new understanding of the classic tale with moody sets and both dark and mythical landscapes. However the film seemed short and some elements of the story were thin. One character in the film, Snowhite's cousin for example I would have liked to see much more of and his life explained.

While the story isn’t original ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is a real winner. Its special effects are excellent as is the directing, acting and especially the script. I love remaking of classics and Rupert Sanders delivers with this film. Components of the original story are kept and supplemented with imaginative additions. The cast all look as though they are having a great time and none disappoint - thoroughly enjoyable.

Whatever Kristen Stewart is paying her agent, it is not enough. Of all the sword and scorcery in this film the hardest thing to swallow was the suggestion that any mirror, enchanted or otherwise, would ever describe Kristen Stewart as "faIrest"" in a kingdom inhabited by Charlize Theron. This being said, an enjoyable enough fantasy adventure.

Quite a good movie. I was ensure if our 12year old daughter would watch this and the movie was fine. I think you either like Kirsten Stewart or your don't. Her acting matched what was the storey line of Twilight however she needs to change it up a bit in other acting roles. Charlize Theron was outstanding in this movie. Great effects. The effects, cinematography, much of the plot -- these were not bad. The hunter was great, the duke's son was great, the villains were pretty good, but Snow White.. er.. the acting was odd, to say the least. To be fair, it wasn't just her: the character was rather poorly written up. And a major part of the plot had too many holes -- at head-scratching levels.

Charlize Theron's performance is as convincing as a staged Snooki tantrum but with less conviction. Chris Hemsworth is the discount Wal-Mart version of Brad Pitt with the voice acting skills of a drawstring puppet. It tries hard but the acting lets it down, I expected more from mega-budget actors. Its only redeeming features are the CGI.

Ok ... I did enjoy this but was very disappointed. The best thing about it was CT's performance - she was absolutely outstanding. The rest of the cast were very average and I felt that CH was really lacking effort - his character had so much more potential but he was very flat, and I agree with the other opinions about his accent, which changed throughout the scenes. KT also lacked character and the potential was never achieved for Snow White's character. However having said all that - I really liked the grim, darkness of it and the cinematography was great. Best part was CT's portrayal of the evil queen in my opinion.

The best version of the classic story I've seen, less Disney and more Lord of the Rings. Kristen Stewart is lovely as Snow White. Chris Hemsworth plays a muddier version of Thor. Through the strains of strained music, wooden acting, Chris Hemsworth not sure whether he was Irish, Scottish or Australian (new scene, new accent) and cute animations this dragged on to it's obvious conclusion. Saved in part by quality actors like Ray Winstone and Toby Jones this was a disappointment. Okay, it's a teen chick flick but not a good one and fails as a fantasy movie.

Great cinematic feel to it (visually stunning landscapes, elaborate production designs and a grand 'fellowship' theme) but with a rather darker and sinister storyline for a lovable fairytale. Could have easily been an MA classification, so it’s a no for the young kids/teens that are screaming and hoping for Kristen's Bella to hook-up with a Norse God in Chris (rather than the 'ordinary' relationship with a wolf of a blood-sucker). Felt a bit rushed to fit the whole screenplay in 2 hours and not the fairest movie of them all BUT is still a definite worth of a watch.
