This is true entertainment. great story; great acting and a movie that leaves an after image on the mind. There are so many layers to enjoy.
I didn't get this movie for a long time as I had some pre conceived idea about it being some piece of happy 'fluff' - how wrong could I have been!! It was an incredibly emotionally charged, beautiful and shocking, in parts, movie. Well worth the view and highly recommended. I loved it.
Well worth watching, a case of 'good' and 'love ' winning out in the end.
My partner and I had resisted watching this movie due to preconceived views. How wrong could we be!! A thoroughly entertaining movie that spoke to both of us about the hidden issues surrounding poverty in India and how easy it is to get caught in a dangerous world out of sheer desperation. The acting was superb and of course the little guy making good just topped it off.
Didn't like this at all.....couldn't even finish watching it.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
wow!!!! It has been a long time since I have felt so strongly about a movie that I have actually posted a critique. For me this is right up there with Seven Pounds! I know......Very different movies but they both had me waiting on the edge of my seat.
Poignant rags to riches story set in the slums of India.
PLEASE don't do as I did, and pass this movie over because you don't know the actors or because you didnt like trainspotting.... It is WELL worth watching!
An entertaining and delightful movie.
Thoroughly enjoyable film about the unlikely success of a slum dweller in Bombay winning the "want to be a Millionaire" TV show. The exposition of the plot gains momentum throughout the film, even though the ending is entirely predictable. Camera and editing around the slums of India are first rate, and very watchable.
I have resisted watching this movie since its release because I didn't want to watch poverty. The first 30 minutes was uncomfortable and I almost turned it off but just about everyone I know who has seen this movie said it was great. So, I persevered and I'm glad I did. I don't know that I 'enjoyed it' but I can appreciate why it received so much acclaim. If you can get the through the first 30 minutes you will probably agree and you might even love it.
This is a brilliant movie! The thing that tugged @ my heart strings the most was seeing the slums and children playing in them...heartbreaking. The story line is lovely too and it's very clever the way that the questions from the show are connected to telling the story.
This movie was just incredible and I must say I'm surprised that it's only averaged 3 stars. I loved the way the story was told through different periods of Jamal, Latika and Jamal's brothers life. Essentially, it is a movie about overcoming odds and how love triumphs no matter what the odds are. Just fantastic in every way, in particular the music and cinematography! 10/10
Very haunting, thoroughly enjoyed the story, sad at times.
Great movie.. i thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish!
This disk is faulty & is not an entertaining theme in my opinion. Doug Peacocke
Second time watching it and it was just as good as the first. Love the Hollywood take on a Bollywood-type movie. An inspiring, feel good story.
enjoyed the movie but the beginning is very hard to follow. Sub-titles aren't on for long enough to read, so missed what was happening. did enjoy the rest of it though. i never left my seat till the movie was finished.
I thought that this was a very good movie. It was an eye opener as to how people live in slums. I thought that it should be a must see DVD for every child who whinges about how bad they have it! If only they knew.
A great film. Refreshingly portraying the life of those who are brought up in hardship in India, but overcome this handicap
Horrible to watch even though I knew it was realistic
Enjoyable but spoilt by last two minutes
Great movie. You can see why it got the raves from Hollywood and then the concerns about what the slum kids got for their part in the film. The interesting thing is that the slumdogs are not embarassed over who they are, they just are.
The film's concept of the present day 'Who wants to be a millionaire?" TV show underpinned with flashbacks for the main character at each question is clever and well done. Watch it for a good night's TV entertainment.
What a great movie. One of my all time favourites. A true love story with some great scenes and storyline
Started slowly but picked up. Interesting the way Jamal's life story was told through the show's questions. And the way the final question was stacked against him. Definitely worth watching.
Wonderful story of hope. Very enjoyable depiction of the colours of India.
Loved the movie what a terrible way to live too much swearing
Enjoyed the movie, to think how other culture live and automaticlty they thought he had to be cheating because he was from the slums
Just too dark for me. I couldn't watch it past the first 30 minutes. I aplaud the idea but just couldn't stomach the darkness of it all
My gosh!
Great movie, well acted, filmed etc....but is that really what it's like for folk in India in this day and age?? He was tortured by the police for goodness sake, simply because they didn't believe a poor person could have any knowledge.
Thank goodness it had a (relatively) happy ending or I would be depressed for life.
Depicts the injustice, cruelty and spite of the human race together with the profound heart and spirit of sublime love.
Whilst I enjoyed the movie, the picture
Great storyline and told interestingly through new techniques. Great cinematics. Very confronting graphics and language. Not for kids or the faint hearted.
Great movie, lived up to all the hype in my opinion. Good insight into the terrible poverty the majority of the Indian population live in.
Only watched this last night. Thought the movie concept was very clever and really enjoyed how each answer told a story. Acting was supberb especially the kids. Sad to know this is how they live but glad to watch movies like this that tell you the true story of life for others
After hearing such great reviews, I was very much looking forward to watching it. However, found movie to be awful and very disturbing....after sitting through 29 minutes of non stop child abuse/torture and other confronting scenes, I turned it off. This maybe the reality of slums in India, but not my idea of entertainment. Despite hearing it has a happy ending, if you are a sensitive to violent scenes/movies, would suggest you avoid this one!
Although the movie started a bit slow soon picked up pace and was a very interesting story showing us how lucky we are to live in Australia.
very uplifting film with confronting overviews of crowded slum life in mumbai
Storyline/ plot - Tick!!!
Cinematography - Tick!!!
Colours - tick!!!

AWESOME!! It's hard to appreciate the fabulousness of it on the widdescreen look though - much better on the big screen.
Great movie! think ourselves lucky we dont live in the slums!
One of the BEST movies I have seen in a long time. I was glued to the tv the whole time. I loved it!!
A wonderful feel good movie.
After all the beat up for the reviews, I was expecting something really good. Having been in India, it's true to life (but without the putrid smells) and the movie was just average and a bit disappointing.
Love this movie, it's got everything - high drama, suspense, culture, amazing scenery, irresistible music, great humour and fun, and a sweet love story! I enjoyed it just as much as I did when I first saw it at the cinema - highly recommended.
I am giving this movie three stars, perhaps 3 1/2 if that were possible. The story seems to be a mixture of a sort of Charles Dickens type of social critique novel and a modern happy ending story in which the hero goes through all sorts of adventures, and finally at the end is triumphant, becomes filthy rich, and gets the girl. Filmed entirely in India, the very worst of society is shown, bringing nightmares to the viewer with not the slightest hint of possible escape. Everything we have ever heard about India is portrayed at gruesome length. Extreme poverty, crooks and con-men everywhere, police brutality beyond belief and, if it were real, no one would survive it. And then the totally incredible victory of the hero Jamal is the climax. Plenty of Indian music, dancing, and sundry singing. Subtitles in English for roughly half of the dialogue which is spoken in (?) Hindi. On the other hand, the acting is mostly pretty good, the filming is well-done, and the mixture of flashbacks does not distract as it might have done, in large part because the color in the flashbacks is very obviously different from that of ???present day??? scenes. From a literary point of view, Charles Dickens novels are vastly superior both in their social critique, and literary quality. (Although the movies made of Dickens novels are by and large no better than this one.) Did the movie deserve its Oscars? Well, no. Why did it become so famous? Perhaps because an Indian film made with the Western world in mind for it to be shown in is a great curiosity. Worth the watching to see what all the fuss was about, not worth the nausea inducing scenes that make up the bulk of the film.
An enjoyable movie particularly the scenes of India were interesting as well. Wouldn't call it much of a comedy though
Very contrived and crassly commercial. if you like your morality served up slick and sentimental you will love this but if you dislike films that that are wholly conceived with the market in mind then you will thoroughly dislike this film.
Some raw voilence, which makes one question how it really is in India....a very interesting approach which weaves through the life of our main player and how he came to know answers to questions on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Of note is the main soundtrack song Jai Ho that will have you chasing up a CD of R A Rahman's work.
Unfortunately, this movie shows us life in the slums of India as it truthly is. This fact alone is very upsetting. I was quite disturbed by this and struggled to watch it to the end. I persisted and was glad I did as it was a happy ending and it has made me more appreciative of my life and where it live.
Definately worth seeing, Sad, happy moving and thought provoking
Fantastic movie, even if the topic was heartbreaking. A lot of sad moments but thankfully some happy ones as well! Highly recommended.
A much darker story than I'd been led to believe, but quite engaging for all that
I really enjoyed this movie. quite escapist in a lot of ways despite the grim reality of life for the poor in India. LOVED the bollywood sequence at the end.
The sad was very sad but the happy was incredibly happy. What a brilliant concept for a movie, fantastic acting especially the younger children
Over rated did not enjoy at all
Great movie. Get it. Fantastic unpredictable story. With some glimpses of the terrible life on India.
Great movie, moving and funny with a great cast. The Bollywood sequence at the closing credits is guarenteed to leave you feeling good. Don't miss it.
Best Movie i have ever seen! Very Sad, brilliantly made. Actors are so cute - the little boys!
A very worthy Academy Award winner.
Yes it was okish, certainly not an Oscar deserving film, the story was a bit obvious,sub-titles very hard to follow as you never knew where they would appear. Not one of the best.
A fairytale drama of sorts with all the right ingredients to make it a crowd pleaser despite some violent episodes. Bollywood meets Scorcese.
This is a fantastic movie, thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend this to anyone!
Very different to what I expected. An eye opener to life in India. Acting was great, and storyline was good, and most importantly a happy ending.
What a surprise! A fabulous movie - the best I have seen in a long time. The story was so well put together and the acting superb. I loved it.
I had high hopes for this movie but was disappointed. I could not understand the dialect very well, and thought the story was going to be better than it was. I got lost in the "going backwards and forwards" story. I thought the best part was the dance at the end!
Movie fans will enjoy this for the quite radical story structure, cinephiles will marvel at the energy and intensity of the performances - particularly the kids, and everybody will leave this movie perhaps rediscovering what it feels like to yearn for someone with ever fibre of your being. A wonderful, humane movie - though with some scenes early on that are probably not suitable for children.
Arguably Danny Boyle's best work by far.
Ok - but I wouldn't want to see it again. I cried about the cruelty and greed the "bad guy" could do to innocent children though.
very enjoyable but sad to think that people actually live like that in india.
Too difficult to read subtitles. Rambling story with very little to grasp onto . Appeared devoid of an interest to us one third through when we ejected the disc.
Unique story telling style. Ending was a little too Hollywood, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Just wish the subtitles were a touch bigger.
Ok, may be I just wasn't in the mood for this movie, but I it has a very paint by numbers plot made only better by the brilliant child actors. The adult actors (when the kids grow up) are not that good. And are we really suppose to believe an uneducated slum girl can grow into a sophisticated model type? Seriously, if it had been set in a Western country the bad plot line would've been more noticeable. The early stuff set in the slums of India was refreshing but then it goes down hill, especially the actual 'who wants to be a millionaire' TV show parts. I couldn't wait for them to be over as the acting jarred.
Definitely a shocker if you're expecting a bollywood romance. Reality hits hard as you are exposed to the seedy underside of life in India as young children are maimed and exploited to fatten the wallets of greedy capitalists. The treatment dished out to the winner of "Millionaire" was totally unexpected but it isn't all bad. Some genuine goodness does shine thru between the raw selfishness and cruelty displayed by many of the characters, and there is a happy ending : )
Deserved every one of it's academy awards!
this was not what i expected, and the movie gave a great insight as to how other people live and the events that shape their lives. well worth a look, and a great ending.
Brilliant. Well deserving of Acadamy Award for best film.
Sorry but i did not stay the distance on this one. Probably good but i could not watch past thec first 15 mins.
i was disappointed expected more.
one of the best movies I have watched in a long time!
Loved it, very compleling the whole way through
A powerful rendition of what life really is like in India.
expectations were high - it didn't dissapoint.
Darker than expected. It's not non stop Bollywood dancing
Ver different. Big eye opener for the kids to see the slum dogs. Good entertainment, good story, bit of a surprise for "bollywood"
Absolutely luvd this movie! Opened my eyes to a lot of things but the way the movie is set out is just fantastic! Very captivating
It's as good as you've no doubt heard. High expectations do nothing to dull the experience. Wonder why there is a minimum world limit to these reviews, when considering so many member reviews wouldn't it be great if some people had one word reviews like 'Wow' or yawn.
Great movie. I really like the way the story is told by the answers to the game show questions. It was the typical "boy meets girl - boy loses girl - boy gets girl" plot, but it didn't feel like it. I loved it and so did my wife.
Well worth seeing. A great plot with lots of drama, action, romance and humour.
SPOILER ALERT
The ending is a bit too Hollywood (and as the credits roll its very Bollywood :) - I would have preferred that Jamal incorrectly guessed the final question. After all, his ultimate prize was Latika - the money was inconsequential - and by the end of the quiz he had found Latika...
Great movie it was made brilliantly, definatly watch. clever.
Great movie, although it was hard to watch it without taking in all the political repewrcussions sinc and not have expectations.
What a great movie!! Great acting, great storyline and great ending...all you can ask for in a movie.
I wonder if they could get the subtitles smaller, I guess not. Nice storyline, full of flashbacks so get ready for it, good actors make this movie an enjoyable one. Yes I was expecting much better because of the fact that it's THE academy award.
MILK should have won it...anyway a movie not to miss: YES. Unforgettable: Unfortunately NOT.
This director has taken the unfortunate lives of orphaned children and made it into an award winning movie. The portrayal of the things that happen to orphaned children in India is a disgrace and he has taken that disgrace and shown the entire world just how these people treat children. There should be some kind of jail where they can lock these people up for cruelty to other humans and no one should have to deal with treatment like this. I take my hat off to Danny Boyle for being brave enough to make this movie. Top marks to go the actors as well because without them this would not have been made. Very interesting turn of events and well worth the watch.
Loved it! Definitely watch this one!
Great movie, I loved the way it was directed...the way it jumped back and forth from past to present
great story, well told by flashbacks, put it on your must see list but not too high
This movie is totally over-rated, it is "OK", but with all those expectation built up by the media (Oscar), the greater disappointment was felt when finish watching the movie.
It is base on "one way" "self explanatory" corny story telling, the picture shooting is different yet not sure it is arty. And the final dance scene actually give me a creep on the skin.
But the kids was totally cute, and I felt really sad to see the place they live and they also attacking each other just on some others' believe.
Excellent Movie Well worth Watching
Yes I gave it 5 stars! Why? - because it's a brilliant script to start with! Thumbs up for everyone who worked on this film. Absolutely fabulous performances from those who "live" life. It was very compelling viewing. Life is a paradox, it's not all squeaky clean and the atrocities do exist even in Australia the "lucky country". For the those who have never visited India, this type of "life" may be hard to grasp, but India is a paradox and in my opinion a very "real" education for those who have travelled there.
In the end what this film gives us is hope and joy. It ends on a high note and deserves the 8 academy awards!
A well written story which has each question of the game show tied in with a part of Jamal's life. Friends who have been to India say the slums are exactly like that. Gotta love the typical 'Bollywood' ending.
Hearing too much before watching... expecting too much. End up an ok movie.
Extremely clever and enlightening..... Really enjoyed it......
This film will make you laugh out loud, gasp in shock, cringe in horror, sigh with sadness and shout in triumph as you witness the hardships of Jamal's journey through a harsh life as an orphan in India.
Definately a must see movie for all the family.
This movie totally fails to live up to the hype it's had. It's a contrived story that makes little sense and doesn't stand up to any thoughtful dissection. With the exception of the central character, the people depicted are unlikeable and unlikely. At least the 'making of' feature on the DVD is interesting and even redeems the film a little by highlighting the difficulties and the technical innovations involved.
I was pretty disappointed with Slumdog Millionaire. After sweeping the Oscars i was expecting big things but it just didn't deliver. It's not a bad movie, it's just not a great movie - which is what I was expecting with all the hype. The storyline is a little disjointed, jumping between past and present and the subtitles weren't that legible in parts as the director was trying to get a bit too creative with them.
Certainly watchable, but far from worthy of all the hype.
Wonderful - original and powerfully told story. A story worthy of a Dickens plot and fascinating scenery. A little touch of Bollywood to lighten the mood at the end. A great change from Hollywood.
Words can't express how much I love this movie.
It's perfect in everyway.
Keep an eye out for Dev Patel.
I have seen a LOT of movies and watched a whole lot of ho hum boring predictable ones.went to the movies to watch this one before it was trendy and was captivated from the start, i was still captivated at the credits and stayed glued to my seat until the screen went blank...to say I loved it isnt enough...its colourful, emotional, spectacular, raw, fresh, PERFECT in every way possible...wouldnt change a thing...BRAVO..the best movie in the last 10 years
just dont read too much about the story before you watch and it will be a fantastic experince...i rated this 6 stars but something wrong with rating stars as it wont budge off 2 and a half.please rate this 5 stars for me quickflix
Great movie. It has a bit of everything in it. I have heard mixed reports of the portrayal of the life in India, but for this movie, it fits in very well. You must watch the ending. Found it hard to take it seriously after that.
Poverty and riches, hate and love, evil and good, torture and pleasure are all glued together by a set of flash-backs linked to tension filled answers by questions posed in the Indian version of Who Wants to be A Millionaire? The contrived thriller-melodrama works a treat as our thinking man-orphaned-hero, Jamal, isn’t on the quiz show for the money, but to win his beautiful childhood sweetheart, Latika from the clutches of a malevolent crime boss. The warts, wealth and class distinctions of modern day Moombi are vividly captured, laid on with Bollywood panache, a Dickensian set of characters, a rags to riches scenerio and atmospheric Indian music, capped off by a leap-for-joy dance sequence during the concluding credits. If you don’t have a big smile on your face after this one, something’s wrong.
this one knocked me out. i especially love a script that wastes nothing; this one is driven by both plot and character. it's smart, funny, moving and thrilling, as well as providing a multi-layered portrait of life in india, especially relating to the slums of mumbai. you need a big screen to get the most out of the scenery. final credits a real winner too.
