Slow and boring. What a waste of celluloid as hey use to say.
Very demanding role for Emily Browning. Confronting in it's emotions.
Intriguing plot, original story, reminded me of the last Kubrick's film "Eyes Wide shut", arguably this film is even better than Kubrick's last film! Well done Aussie film, not for everybody although, adult viewing only.
Are you Serious! I dont usually read reviews before watching movies. Sure wish I did this time. DISTURBING BIG TIME. No story at all. Very Poor!
An interesting film that certainly won't appeal to everyone. Browning's performance is terrific, but you need to be in the mood for something occasionally confronting and pretty slowly paced. Takes a while to get a deeper insight into the character. Very amusing reading some people's reviews.
This has got to be one of the best australian films to be made in a long, long time. problem with aussie movies is to detailed to get into at this time. great acting.
i hope emily moves to america, before she becomes a reality/cooking/gardening/holiday host or staring in the latest underbelly cause she'll do a nude scene.
the best aussie movie in a long time still only gets 3 stars. (says how bad the others are.)
This was very unsettling and disturbing.
i think this movie had potential to be seriously very disturbing, but unfortunately fell short. obviously, i didn't pick this hoping for a 'fairytale' or an 'erotic fairytale' like some of the other mainstreamers on the comments here, but i did expect something a little more intellectually provoking.
firstly, the plot seems to be based on a flimsy idea so there's a bit of randomness about the main character's actions and persuasions. secondly, there's a lot of disconnect with the 'boyfriend' character, no background or context. thirdly, the ending could have been something much more powerful, ripping, raw, but seemed a bit wimpy.
for those enjoying a bit of the dark side, i would even recommend some great European or Japanese films, but this one is missable
A strange and disturbing film. I dont like films without proper endings either. The Emily Browning character was unlikable and distant. Stuck it out to the end but not sure why I bothered.
Movie that is somewhat disturbing . It touches on taboo subjects and makes you wonder if it is pure fiction or if such arrangements actually exist in reality.
Sophisticated, unpretentious, thought-provoking, moving, original. We were challenged and entralled by this intelligent and original film. If you are thoughtful, curious rather than prejudiced on social and sexual matters you will enjoy this film. An excellent mature Australian film.
2 stars because I was in this movie and the Lead did a brilliant Job of playing dead/Unconscious, the movie itself is very artsy, lots of full frontal nudity from her and other cast members, but very obscure so wont appeal to many people. Shot very well and again, she was magnificent in her breakdown scenes and playing a completely lifeless body It full marks to her for that
Strange movie - watchable ,but certainly not for everyone - adults only
A vague female student drifts into a kinky gentleman’s club scene to make ends meet with strange results. Silly movie that tries to be more profound than it actually is. The twist at the end doesn’t really come as a surprise. 3.5 stars
I didnt like this movie at all
totally repulsive film which had nothing but that. Bad choice wasn't it?
Well it is a movie that you will either enjoy or detest but which ever way you come out of the experience, you won't have been bored.
And this movie IS an experience. A journey into a girl's dramatic lifestyle and a journey into an alternative movie making style, one which I enjoyed (proud to be Australian with our artistic craft in movie making) and one which lingered with me in order to somehow try to grasp its art, albeit a little scruffy around the edges.
This was possibly one of the worst movies e-v-e-r ... dull, boring, monotonous ... sexually themed (got the kids out of the room FAST) .. not the sleeping beauty we thought it would be !! Its synopsis makes it sound interesting (ADULT ONLY) but its not.
Arty rubbish, one star for the fact that the very attractive Emily Browning is naked a lot of the time but apart from that.....a waste of time!
Strange. I really don't know what else to say. Except if there are services out there for the 'richer older folk' then, um ok.... It's an eye opener.
I was excited to see another Australian Film. However, about half way through it was progressing too slowly. I got bored and wanted to turn it off. Might as well have as there was nothing particualrly fantastic to be missed. A lot of useless scenes and quiet background. Could've been better.
This was too art house, too bad and should come with a warning or a money back guarantee. Life is to short.
Well that was an hour and a half of my life I will never get back... Take my advice and pull your fingernails out one by one instead, it would be much more enjoyable! If I could give less stars I would!!!
I really didn't get this movie. I quite like the arty movies but this was just mind-numbingly boring. I found that the story left gapin holes and in some parts was quite unbelievable and implausible. How does someone who works three jobs (one as a prostitute) still not be able to afford rent in a share house, when she doesn't drive a porsche or anything like that. The end was abrupt. It is 100 minutes of my life I will never get back.
no story no plot a few gratuitious nipples = rubbish
not my up of tea, had the potential to be a lot better
THIS IS NOT A FAIRYTALE!! Do not rent this movie if you are expecting a fairytale or even a modern take on one. I'm not sure how this movie made it past the censors with only an MA15 rating as it's bordering on porn. If your idea of entertainment is seeing an unconscious naked teenage girl being physically and sexually abused by wrinkly old men then this is the movie for you! I cannot believe that with all the Australian acting talent present in this movie, they chose to make such an abhorrent depiction of the subject. This movie simply feeds those in society who find this sort of behaviour gratifying. I am so glad my DVD Player wouldn't work when I sat down with my family to watch this movie. It was pure luck that I tried playing it on my PC and previewed the content. It made me sick, and that's only the bits I saw as I fast forwarded through, looking for some reprieve from the disgusting depiction of this story. I was very happy to seal it back into the reply paid envelope and return to Quickflix.
Started well, dwindled as it went on, underwhelming twist at the end. I love a quirky flick but the oddness seemed too contrived in parts (vodka on cereal? Really???), and far too much nudity for it to come under the term 'erotic drama'. No mystery here! Raises some interesting questions, and then leaves many unsolved.
This was a wannabe artsy film. While Brown is stunning, there is barely any dialogue and the movie consists almost entirely of her laying in bed with gross old men with tiny peckers. So boring and not much of a storyline.
Absolute rubbish!! LOL sorry.
Nearly fell asleep myself but for the mildly titillating eroticism, which means that whatever message about sexuality Julia Leigh was trying to get across didn't travel very far into my antediluvian male brain. Nicely shot, Emily Browning is very attractive and it was good to see some old faces on the screen again - Peter Carroll, Hugh Keays-Burn. Not a break-through Aussie movie as some claim; in fact it's in a very old tradition of Australian thrillers that aren't actually thrilling..
I didn't enjoy this movie at all. It was quite an empty movie and the plot was very weak. It was a waste of time!
Waste of time, a pointless movie, could not get into it.
This was a twisted movie I couldn't get into. Watched for 15 mins tghen gave up. Good for a perv on barely dressed females but seemed to be about females being submissive.Odd.
Intriguing. Thought provoking. Unnerving at times. Highly recommended.
This movie is not for your average, mainstream movie watcher (as can be seen from the comments). However, for those who like it a bit "dark" and "distriburbing" and definitely a touch of Arty/Foreign, this one is great. I loved it! I am from a European background, so maybe I am more used to/tolerant to this type of movie. Not sure it would suit most Aussies (my husband couldn't get into it) . It reminded me of "Eyes wide shut" or "Story of the O". I didn't think it was boring or slow - it kept me interested all the way through. Great acting, beautiful shot. Well done to the Director/Actors for making such a deep/profound movie. Very brave for the Aussie movie landscape. I read that it got a standing ovation at Cannes and was the darling of many film festivals. But, it is definitely not for everyone!
God it can't be very hard to get a movie in the Cannes festival.....but this movie is complete rubbish. I couldn't even get the the end!!!!!
AWFULL, pointless and demeaning
NOT A GO SEE Movie..worse one iv seen made in Australia, come on you can do better than that.
A strange, occasionally repulsive, and yet beautifully made film about sex, money, power, and the exploitation of women. Emily Browning has real guts, but the male performances are also strong -- especially in the intimate moments behind closed doors. Overall the film has a cold, sad, depressing feel but still I couldn't turn away from it. Vaguely reminiscent of Eyes Wide Shut only without Tom Cruise which I thought was a considerable improvement.
Not a bad study of the seedy underbelly of sex amongst the disgustingy wealthy (but morally poor) men of Australia.
Ok. Saw similarities to 'Eyes Wide Shut'.
Interesting movie. Not what I thought but we liked it quite a lot.
srange movie,but watchable
strange but riveting. made me cringe . Wonderful acting by the main actress , Deserves an accolade
A wierd and painful movie to watch ! ;-(
This was the weirdest movie I have ever seen. Still don't understand alot of it.
I am disappointed with this moving.
A slow but intricate Australian movie which kept me entertained by the melachony undertone of one trying to survive around so much ruin in their personal life.
weird movie. A bit full on and never really saw the point of it.
Strange, but compelling. Worth Seeing.
terrible pointlees waste of time
Wooden acting, doubtful premise, confusion about where it's going.
Emily Browning is amazing but as far as the movie goes....what a shocker. Do yourself a favour and pick something else!!
If I'm being nice, I would describe this movie as.... DISTURBING. However, in honest truth, it is sick, twisted and perverse. If you are a fan of necrophilia or abusing sleeping girls, then enjoy this film. However, for everyone else - AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE.
A remarkably brave film which I found deep and profound. If I'm honest, I think there's something of all women in Lucy and something of all men in the clients at the 'brothel'. It seems to me to be a dream like landscape containing some pretty deep issues between men and women. I thought it a beautiful, provocative film of great depth.
terrible terrible movie dont bother.
Amazing how Australian Tax Dollars at work can produce crap like this. Pathetic story line, designed to "shock and awe" as an excuse to be "artisitc" or appeal to the artistic nature. Too little charecter depth and growth and a story line that goes absolutely nowhere and seemingly without purpose. Pity you can not rate it zero. No wonder Screen Australia has financial problems...
A strange film - so now I know what uni students do to earn a few dollars. A bit disjointed & hard to get into. I was left wondering why she setup the video camera towards the end & did she tape the whole performance ? Acting - I didn't think there was much but Emily was pleasant to look at.
You can almost picture all the arty types associated with this movie slapping themselves on the back for a job well done - thinking they have produced something provocative and contoversial. Well, it's not. In fact, it's dead boring. It's a waste of time. The only positive I got out of it was seeing Ewan Leslie (star of the Melbourne Theatre Company's Richard the 3rd in it as Birdman, but even his role made no sense. Don't bother.
Love Emily Browning but this is the worst movie I have ever seen
I think this movie had some interesting concepts such as depression, self and money but it didn't deliver it could have been a lot better.
Emily Browning did a great job though considering
This was the worst movie I can ever remember seeing. I thought it was going to to be a fantasy movie. I obviously did not read the info on it correctly. Could not watch it all the way though. I turned it off after the first dinner scene.
This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Do not pick this one.
A profoundly strange movie, albeit quite intriguing and bizarre. At some levels it is quite believable, if weird. The biggest problem with the film is that the majority of scenes are never properly put in context, or too short to understand what happened, or never followed up, leaving the viewer in a daze of non-comprehension. At least there is no language problem; it's all in very normal Australian.
Interesting film that wasn't really about sex or power, but seemed to be about death of self. This story portrays a young woman drowning in her life- being dragged down by her mother, friend and herself. Even though it had alot of sexual content, this film was not sexual at all, but explored themes of discontent, ageing and self-destruction. Browning is excellent, but this film has been reviewed as disjointed and confusing. It is. It should have been very powerful however, it didn't quite follow through to a powerful ending. Shame.
i love emily browning but this movie made me go what the fork! and whats up with the ending i didnt get it.
This movies tries to be arty, erotic and almost European (I almost expected to see the subtitles). Interesting choice of role for someone who has been in Lemony Snicket and Sucker Punch. I didn't like this from about 10 minutes in, but forced myself to watch the rest.
This movie is a complete waste of time.
This film is trying to be an intelligent artistic piece similar to what has come out of European cinema, but is neither intelligent nor artistic. Instead, it is disjointed, soulless, boring, and all over the place. Nothing of interest happens, the 'graphic and disturbing' shots are neither graphic or disturbing, and the more 'bizarre' parts of the film come and go with no real context and no continuity. The monologue in the middle seems pointless, the sexual aggression shown by the men is unrealistic and laughable. It's as if the writer/director was at a loss as to what to put in these scenes. It could have been better if the film-makers were braver and less pretentious. Such a shame that poor Emily Browning had to go through all that and end up with a film that is nothing but pretentious, pseudo-intelligent, garbage.
Wierd movie. Usually I like wierd movies but some of the 'Sleeping' scenes were just plain disturbing. The movie doesn't give a lot away so it makes your think about what your watching. Emily Browning is absolutely gorgeous in the movie and her acting is superb but I wouldn't recommend even bothering with it - the plot isn't worth your time.
Totally disjointed, still wondering what it was about and what was the guy putting down her throat?
Pathetic, don't bother. Turned it off mid way.
i found this film extremely disturbing and very hard to watch, emily browning"s performance was fantastic though.
