Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed a further three things - no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig… SPANISH LANGUAGE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

The Skin I Live In certainly puts the ! in ALMODOVAR! The Spanish auteur's latest film is particularly melodramatic, bizarre, and visually sumptuous, even by his already heightened standards. It establishes one demented version of reality in the first half, and then sucker punches the audience with a twist that makes everything that came before seem tame by comparison. Whether it's to a completely satisfying end is harder to say. However, as a body horror flick that evokes everything from The Fly, Oldboy and our old friend The Human Centipede, whilst still remaining purely Pedro, it's a nifty achievement.

Almodovar's old collaborator Antonio Banderas stars as plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard, who has grown obsessed with developing flame-retardant skin since the unfortunate incineration of his wife years earlier. Trapped in his estate is prisoner Vera (Elena Anaya), who Robert has been experimenting on and creepily morphing into his late partner's clone. When Robert's housekeeper/ secret mother(!) Marilla (Marisa Paredes) offers sanctuary to her criminal son/Robert's secret brother (!) Zeca (Roberto Alamo), it seems as if the picture is about to take a dark (well, even darker) turn. However, Zeca's violent invasion of the Ledgard home actually brings Robert and Vera closer together. Once they finally engage in a lover's embrace, we're treated to their origin story. And everything you thought you knew about these characters changes.

The picture is based on Thierry Jonquet's novel Tarantula. But what's it all about, Almie? Is this a tale about the way in which our personalities and sexualities can't be changed regardless of the extent upon which our facade is altered? Does it seek to challenge the heteronormal ideas of man and woman, or husband and wife? Is it a satire about scientific evolution, commenting on how less human we become as we learn more about our body's makeup? Or is Almodovar just having the same fun he always has - working with a slightly more grotesque palette than usual - and escalating classic telenovela tropes to 150% and taking them to their (un)natural conclusion? The answer is likely a genetic-mutation of the above.

Unfortunately, In his efforts to simultaneously entrance and disturb the audience, Almodovar is unable to stick the landing in a fulfilling way. The ending is somewhat anti-climactic; it's as if he isn't willing to go to the extreme lengths of other horror movies to give us a real gut-busting finale. However, the rest of the film is so deliriously strange, and more than occasionally affecting, that the sudden ending is easily forgivable.

4/5

This was a fantastic movie. Great acting, amazing story line with plot twists that were completely unexpected. A MUST see film. Great to see Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar back together again. Also what a treat to have one of my favourite singers, Concha Buika, perform a number of songs.

This is a movie with a rather creative storyline but it works. Banderas is good, in fact all the acting is very good. So run with it.

This is like Pedro Almodovar's version of a David Cronenberg movie, by turns disturbing, melodramatic and visually spectacular. A bizarre plot twist is revealed in a flashback that recontextualises everything in the film. Afterwards the film's momentum sputters out a bit, but eventually recovers in time for a sudden and somewhat dissatisfying ending. A haunting film; left me thinking for days afterwards. Recommended, except for the baffling amount of subtitle-haters who rent foreign arthouse films.

Totally awesome and freaky movie. Keeps you guessing all the way. A pleasant surprise. Just remember, it's sub-titled so there is reading involved.

Found this hard to keep up with the subtitles. Was intriguingly slow moving with a nice little twist at the end. Antonio Banderas played a good part but he was not able to release his full potential.

Granted not for all tastes, but personally I am familiar with Almodovar's style, and I found this movie fascinating. If the predictable format along the lines of the Hollywood sausage factory is more your style, then you need not apply. Unorthodox for sure, but isn't that a good thing? They say the sign of a good movie is that you don't even realize you are acing subtitles - that was the case well and truly for me.

Not everyone will but I enjoyed the movie, rich in metaphors and twists, part Pygmalion part Frankenstein maybe you can think of some other myth hidden in there. Not Almodovar's finest but still has his magic touch. The film score adds a classic film noir tension reminiscent of Hitchcock.

Almodovar is clearly one of the great modern auteurs, a visual stylist with an eye for color and framing, and someone who can succeed equally well with melodrama, noir, or comedy (always verging on hysteria or the extreme). Here, we find him in a darker mode, echoing Eyes Without a Face but pushing it further in a gender-bending direction than you thought it could go. Unfortunately, however, The Skin I Live In is something of a misfire for Pedro, keeping the audience at a chilly distance from the main characters and imposing a time-shifting plot structure that fails to satisfyingly resolve confusion generated early on. Too many threads of the story become loose ends and as the whole thing unravels, we end up pretty far from where we began, seemingly in another picture. But Almodovar is so prolific that I'm sure we won't need to wait long for another chance for him to show us his real stuff.

A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession. This film holds your interest from the start. Moves slowly but it needs to be.

This was nothing like what I was expecting, yet it was so bizarre I found myself telling people I had just seen it, telling them parts of the story line, and asking them what they would have done, if...... None of them would have done what happened in the main story line, which I did not reveal. Those who were curious then went on to see the movie. Like me, no one expected the events that unfolded.

Certainly not what I was expecting. Tends to be a bit all over the place, Could only be described as "Strange", however it got me watching all the way to the end, perhaps in some hope it would actually get better.... It didn't.

Didn't enjoy. Subtitles were too small for me to read comfortably. Ended up turning it off. Looking at the other reviews maybe I should have sat a bit closer to the tele and persevered. Oh well....

i have seen a few foreign titles with similar 'scenerios' like this title before. Although this still 'felt' original unto it's own right. I particulary enjoyed the 'twists & turns' throughout which added good substance to movie & created a 'not boring' feel. recomended view if you don't mind the 'subtitles'

A most unusual and innovative story. The first par is all very contemporary and intriguing, especially the mysterious girl. Then the film seems to lose momentum and go off on a different story. But of course it comes together and all is explained. It's a wonderful movie that's challenging and thoughtful, even combined with sex and violence.
