Low level coarse language, Sexual references, Nudity

Director: Fred Schepisi
Actors: Stockard Channing, Will Smith, Donald Sutherland

"The ultimate movie about the New York cult of class" (Glamour), this "rich and challenging cinematic treat" (Playboy) is both a laugh-out-loud comedy and a biting social commentary about the separation between the haves and the have-nots. Will Smith gives a "mightily impressive debut," Donald Sutherland "is perfection" and Oscar-nominated Stockard Channing "moves from brilliance to somewhere above and beyond brilliance" (CBS-TV) in a story that's all the more amazingàbecause it's true!

Posing as the son of Sidney Poitier, "Paul" (Smith) deftly penetrates the world of art-dealing urbanites Ouisa and Flan Kittredge (Channing and Sutherland). But as Paul's web of dropped names and near fame begins to unravel, he provides his hosts with much more than just the ultimate cocktail anecdote -- he sets in motion a series of events that will alter the course of their lives forever.

If you like watching theatre plays then perhaps you will like this movie. I personally did not like the style of acting which is very theatre-like. Some scenes are clearly over-acted. Also the story line has some invented elements hard to believe. While the main character is based on a real person (more info/his biography available on Wikipedia) the "Pigmalion"-like part of the story (and also the record book listing names of friends attending the same school) seems both completely invented by the script writer. Also the whole talk about "six degrees" seem not very related to the story of the conman. So, overall I do not rate it very high, slightly irritating overall.

Wonderful cast, fine acting, but sadly oh so boring! Had this DVD on the top of my list and had to wait months to get it... such a disappointment and waste of time.

Adapted from John Guare’s successful Broadway play, it begins by turning a chance event, like accidentally bumping into a friend far from home, on its head. ‘Have-not’ con artist Paul (Will Smith) makes an unlikely connection with two ‘haves’, art dealer Flan (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Ouisa (Stockard Channing), a certainty. Fascinating though they are, these three outstanding performers (and impostors) aren’t always easy to empathise with. Their story, largely set in chic New York city venues, is told through a series of flash-backs using clever dialogue bursting with thought provoking ideas such as when Ouisa says, “I am bound -- you are bound -- to everyone on this planet by a trail of six people. . . How everyone is a new door, opening into other worlds."
