Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man is unspeakably gorgeous to behold. From the glorious cinematography to the impossibly beautiful actors and actresses; no frame is wasted on anything even close to ugliness. It is impeccable. But since when has prettiness equalled good filmmaking? Ford is primarily a fashion designer and photographer, and it shows. He is best known for his five year tenure as Creative Director for Gucci, during which time he turned the nearly bankrupt fashion label into a powerhouse valued at $US4.3 billion. This man has had a lot of success in the business of beauty. However, filmmaking is a different game, and aesthetic appeal only gets you so far.

George Falconer (Colin Firth) is a closeted English professor struggling to deal with the unexpected death of his partner Jim (Matthew Goode). The year is 1962 and George can hardly express or explain his grief to the people around him. Perhaps his only true friend is Charley (Julianne Moore), a middle aged woman who loves him, despite knowing full well that he does not reciprocate in quite the same way. The film takes place over the course of one day in George’s life, beginning on the very morning he plans to kill himself. Throughout the day he will encounter various people who will remind him of the richness of life, and others will remind him why he has decided to end it.

There is something oddly disquieting about a first time director with so much confidence. A Single Man (based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel of the same name) has a singular vision, and it’s undeniably Ford’s. But the project feels more like a perfume commercial rather than a feature film. There is so much symbolism; endless, endless symbolism. Metaphors range from the glaring to the obvious. The colour palette fluctuates (annoyingly) between drab and over-saturated, in time with George’s own emotions. Perhaps this is why I’m bothered by the confidence of the direction here; it feels like Ford thinks he has nothing left to learn, when that is far from the truth. The talents required to put together an attractive fashion spread for a magazine do not directly translate to the composition of a film. The composition of a frame? Yes! But we need to engage with these tragic characters more than we do the dead-eyed supermodels in Ford’s Gucci catalogue.

The heart of the film comes from Firth, who is phenomenal. The hype and the Oscar nomination are well deserved. Elegant and effete, with a bruised soul to boot. Best of all are his glimpses of cheekiness, his razor wit, his flirtatious glances, his moments of pure vulnerability. He doesn’t overwhelm with gravitas; he doesn’t release an anguished howl towards the heavens when he receives news of Jim’s passing. This is a man who has spent his whole life hiding from the world, to the point that he’s not even sure how much of himself he should reveal, even when alone.

Julianne Moore is also great as Charley; it’s a fun role, and a short one, but being Julianne Moore, she doesn’t phone it in. Also excellent is Matthew Goode as the late Jim, revealed through flashbacks as lovable and perfect. Sure, that’s exactly how George would remember him. But Jim never seems like a cliché and the credit belongs entirely to Goode. Also memorable are Nicholas Hoult and Jon Kortajarena as two boys who cross George’s path during this fateful day. Although Hoult’s role is bigger (as one of George’s students), Kortajarena leaves the biggest mark, as a friendly but very sad hustler.

I’m reminded of another film in which the filmmaker gets in the way of his highly capable cast: Lee Daniels with Precious. Although Ford’s direction is not nearly as egregious as fellow first timer Daniels, it is similarly in your face. It’s one thing to consistently remind the viewer that they are watching a film; it’s another to convince them that they are pawing through a fashion catalogue. A shame really, because the number of mainstream films featuring gay or lesbian characters (let alone led by them) remains a rare commodity. You would hope that the few that receive a theatrical release would be of the highest quality. Sadly, if it wasn’t for Firth, A Single Man would be little more than a vapid exercise in art decoration. Still, what beautiful art decoration!

3/5

4.5 stars. Amazing detail of the early 60's era with all the gadgetry, style etc. Firth was truly excellent, as was Julianne Moore and the rest of the cast. This was a very moving account of gay life in that time with the kind of insights drawn from a literary novel and not otherwise normally seen in films.

You won't walk away from this movie feeling enlightened. Nor will you be uplifted. On the contrary feeling flat and somewhat frustrated. But this movie is a piece of art, not so much to be enjoyed but respected. Brilliant performances by all. Julianne Moore is at her usual best but Colin Firth excels. A perfect performance. Sets perfectly authentically early 60s. In fact everything in its production is perfect. But however perfectly forgettable as well.

You can tell a man with a passion for fashion and design directed this movie. This is Gucci director Tom Ford's baby ALL OVER. Stunning images, gorgeous composition of shots throughout - but is the movie any good? Yes - all style, all substance - a bittersweet, all too true tale of what life was like for gay men in 1960s Los Angeles. Homosexuality was the dirty little secret you had to keep - and if you were careful all that betrayed you was your neat lifestyle - no wife, no children, no mess. Well kinda. Some gay men were married and tried to keep it neat and discreet that way - but it all unravelled - it always does. Colin Firth plays the title role in this beautiful movie, to stylish perfection. You feel his grief - even one year on after his lover's untimely death - and you feel his optimism too when it seems like he just may be able to move on with a new love - until... Worthwhile for all lovers, gay, straight - whatever.

Incredible. Saw this at the cinema when it first came out, and it was just as good the second time around. Colin Firth is incredible - there is no limit to this man's talents. This is visually gorgeous and an absolutely heartbreaking story. I can't believe the number of reviewers who have said this film is 'boring'. Clearly people with no capacity for empathy. We are lucky enough to live in a culture that (generally) accepts homosexuality. America in the 1960s was a different matter. This very powerful film reminds us that we shouldn't take our freedoms for granted - they have been hard won. The music is beautiful, all performances superb.

A reserved gay British academic ponders life after the death of his one love. Dour study of loss which is largely interesting as it set in LA during the early sixties (a strange fish out of water atmosphere). Performances are strong with Julianne Moore channelling Ann Margaret. 3.5 stars

Colin Firth is mesmerising in this (almost too) elegant film. Everything is so incredibly beautiful, the lighting, the costumes - the house the main character lives in nearly outclasses Colin Firth.... One thing I really enjoyed about this film is the way it so beautifully evoked its intended era, not just relying on crass 60's stereotypes. After it had finished I actually felt like I had just put down one of those slim 1960's paperbacks and that made me realise that those 'too tidy' moments were in fact entirely necessary in order to maintain the original author's integrity. If you like this sort of thing this is the sort of thing you'll love!

Deals with coping with death of a partner, friendships and loneliness. Quality acting by Firth and an interesting character portrayed but oh so slow, minimal storyline other than an appreciation of life once you decide to take your life? Few characters start to develop then drop off. Overall just a FAIR nights entertainment, could have been much better.

Why does this movie remind me so much of Tony Leung's artsy movies eg. 2046 or In the mood for love? Is it the music, the lead's narratives, or the retro nostalgia? Was that how Tom Ford learn his trade, watching Wong Kar Wai movies? Some serious critic tell me please.

Beautiful, melancholy and poignant. I love the way colour would seep in and out of scenes, showing the beauty and vibrancy of a singular moment in the greyness of an every day life. If you had one day left to live how would you spend it? What would you remember? And how do you learn to live after you've lost your reason for living? pain and joy blend together in this beautiful sad and uplifting movie. An amazing directorial debut from Tom Ford. A truly talented man.

Disappointing. I had heard such great things, just didn't do it for me. As an at film which I thought it was trying to emulate it lacked truth. Working within the 60's - the age of aquarius, it's lack of depth and ability to engage and entice was just incredibly disappointing. There were long stretches of self indulgence and navel gazing which made me hit the fast forward button, something I don't do often. Firth who is generally gaze worthy was totally overpowered by the true 60's black framed glasses which made him look like a Roger Moore clone. I paid for it to download and deleted it because I know I never want to see it's like again. leave the art film to the Coen Brothers.

This was truly one of the best films of 2009. It has a wonderful rhythm, fabulous sets and the cast members (especially Firth) deliver exceptional performances. The soundtrack is on a whole other level of divine - I actually went out and bought the CD and the composer (Abel Korzeniowski) has really excelled himself. You truly can recall scenes in the movie just from the music (and I only watched it once) - now that's talent. This movie deserves every one of these five stars.

Colin Firth stars in his Oscar nominated role as a gay man in the 1960's dealing with the loss of his longtime lover who is tragically killed. Julianne Moore features as his best friend, whose life appears unfulfilled and forever searching to find happiness and often with Firth. The movie reflects on the happiness felt by Firth's character whilst with his lover and how he navigates the world successfully despite effectively being a misfit of the time. The movie offers viewers insight into the disenfranchised grief experienced by Firth's character, in a time where archetypal relationships predominantly reigned.

Had this movie out for ages and tried to watch it a few times but couldn't sit through it. I thought it would be quite somber but it turned out to be fairly uplifting when I finally watched it all the way through. The best thing about it was the set design - I've read that it was designed by the Mad Men production crew to give it authenticity as it is set in the early 60s. Loved Julianne Moore but didn't see enough of her and I got sick of Colin Firth pretty quickly. Ok but just not enough substance or story.

A beautifully shot, contemplative film, this movie is ultimately a romance. George has lost his long term love, and their dogs, in a car accident. So he resolves that today will be his last day on earth. Similar to 'American Beauty', the film celebrates the beauty in the mundane, with lots of exquisitely lit shots and slow movement, which, rather than being boring as suggested by some reviewers, helps to convey the mood of seeing and experiencing the world as though it were for the last time. The fact that the characters are gay is not key to the movie, although it partly explains George's isolation, his inability to communicate about his despair to those around him. A wonderful movie about living each day as if it were your last, which left us feeling uplifted.

George Falconer (Colin Firth) approaches a car accident in the middle of a snow-white scenery. There is a bloodied man there and he kisses him. He wakes up: he had dreamed the moment when his partner of 16 years, Jim (Mathew Goode), died. Jim was visiting alone his family. When the phone rings at George's home, he remembers how a friend of Jim had phoned him to tell what happened, and he couldn't even attend the funeral, as the family did not approve of Jim's life. George opens his heart only to Charley (Julianne Moore), his once girlfriend, who may still attracted to him. This is the synopsis off imdb. Wish I had read this before selecting the movie, as I had no idea that he was gay. As soon as we start seeing men kissing, I'm afraid thats it for my husband, who just can't watch... a friend had seen it that I saw the next day, and she told me we didn't miss much, a very depressing movie.... so yeah I guess I wont get to experience the fine acting...
