As this science fiction classic opens, botanist Freeman Lowell (Bruce Derns) has spent three years aboard the space freighter "Valley Forge" preserving the only botanical specimens left on earth under huge Geodesic domes. When he receives orders to destroy the project and return home Lowell rebels and hijacks the freighter, killing his fellow crewmen, injuring himself, and plunging the craft into the gaseous rings of Saturn. From that moment on, he has only the trees, the gardens, and two "Drone" robots, Huey and Dewey, to keep him company on the loneliest adventure of all.

A really entertaining Sci-Fi/Drama set in space, I'm sure the hippies and environmentalists would be excited about the storyline...the main character, Freeman, comes across as a real nutcase though...but I spose anyone would being alone up in a space with only plants and some droids as company...doesn't hold a candle to other Space dramas like 2001: A space odyssey but it's certainly not bad :)

Movie stands up pretty well, despite its age. Apart from the Joan Baez tracks which are truly dreadful :-)

rather terrible 70's sci-fi flic. Did a fantastic job of putting me to sleep right before the credits. After watching it again I quite enjoyed watching this film. Its almost as funny as it is serious by way of science in the 70's. virtually a sci-fi thriller.

Rates highly because it is a landmark in the sci-fi genre evolving. Simple, slow but focussing on issues and humanity, not action and effects.

OK - it has it's slow moments. But it's a seminal conservation film - and it's set in space after the earth has become so toxic that it cannot sustain it's diverse ecosystems. The space borne arks are commissioned and sent off on a broad orbit of the solar system to maintain the ecosystems (complete with flora and fauna) until the recall order will bring them home to restore the Earth to its once pristine natural beauty. The arks are tended by space forest rangers of sorts - some more committed to the mission ideals more than others - and that's where the core of the story lies. And when the order finally does come from Earth - it's not what we expected. And although it's funny to say it - this is Bruce Dern at his best. And iif you can enjoy the long (loooong) shots of the robots tending the spaceship's hull structure in hard vacuum, the beautiful arks hurtling through space, the bunnies nibbling at the green green grass...then you'll be rewarded for your attention. A great flick - although it screams 1971.
