The year is 1954, at the height of the Cold War, when US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are summoned to Shutter Island to investigate the implausible disappearance of a brilliant multiple murderess from a locked room within the impenetrable Ashecliffe Hospital. Surrounded by probing psychiatrists and dangerously psychopathic patients on the remote, windswept isle, they arrive into an eerie, volatile atmosphere that suggests nothing is quite what it seems.

Martin Scorsese is a living legend. He has more classic films under his belt than any filmmaker deserves. At this point, he could probably direct in his sleep, and he very well might do so in the future. Hey, he’s earned it! No one can dispute the brilliance of his seminal pictures Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas (well, not successfully anyway). His last film, The Departed, won him his first Best Director Oscar and also became his first film to claim Best Picture. Then the backlash began. That’s not to say Scorsese had never been criticised in the past. But fans began to lament the fact that one of the last remaining filmmakers of the New Hollywood movement was working on projects seemingly unworthy of his time. Sure, The Departed didn’t feature the weighty, grandiose themes of his earlier work. But it was about as perfect a crime-thriller as you can get. His latest film, Shutter Island, is even less “important” than The Departed. But Scorsese is clearly enjoying himself with this old-school throwback to thrillers past. And it’s hard not to revel in it with him.

The year is 1952. Two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), emerge from the fog aboard a rickety old ferry en route to Shutter Island. The island is home to the Ashecliffe hospital for the criminally insane. A patient has escaped, seemingly into thin air. Her name is Rachel Solondo and she’s a frail, intense woman who drowned her three children yet refuses to accept that they are dead. The marshals begin their investigation, but it seems like everyone is hiding something. Even Daniels. Especially Daniels. He suspects that the doctors are actually conducting experiments on their patients, recalling the ‘tests’ orchestrated by the Nazis. He intends to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, regardless of the danger. At night he dreams of his late wife (Michelle Williams), who warns him to stop digging. He should have listened.

It doesn’t need to be said that Shutter Island is based on Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name, adapted for the screen by Laeta Kalogridis. It is not the first time Lehane’s work has been turned into a movie. Ben Affleck directed an excellent adaptation of his novel Gone Baby Gone in 2007, while Clint Eastwood developed Mystic River into a film in 2003. Now, Eastwood is a director who will not rest until he can inject each of his pictures with as much ham-fisted ‘profundity’ as possible. It didn’t exactly seem like a film, but instead a competition amongst the stars (particularly Tim Robbins and Sean Penn) to out-mug one another. Scorsese on the other hand, although perfectly adept at achieving genuine profundity, has fun with Lehane’s source material.

From the unsettling first shot to the haunting final frame, Scorsese seems to relish every moment of Shutter Island. His trademark camera tricks are all here; whip-pans, tracking shots et al. But here he’s more concerned with evoking the great psychological thrillers, particularly Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Kubrick’s The Shining, and probably a dozen more films that you and I have never seen (Scorsese, a cinephile of the highest degree, prepares a list of movies for his cast to watch for inspiration before shooting begins). It achieves the rare feat of perfectly capturing the sensation of a nightmare, much like Lars von Trier’s Antichrist and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. The sound design is particularly brilliant, with every single moment of audio custom designed to set you shivering. At times, the film boldly breaks free of its ‘psychological thriller’ shackles and ventures into genuine horror. And it is genuinely horrifying. Make no mistake, this is Scorsese trying his hand at pure genre; it’s occasionally schlocky and the scares are sometimes very cheeky. But it always feels like the work of a master.

So while it is no crime for the great Scorsese to “lower” himself to direct a disposable thriller, it is a crime that its climactic scene almost derails the effectiveness of the picture’s first two thirds. The ending of Shutter Island is not so much unexpected as it is inexplicable. Anyone who has seen a psychological thriller before will be expecting a twist from the get go, but most audience members will likely be left scratching their heads with this one. That’s not to say it’s particularly surprising, or even inventive. The best twist endings should inform further viewings of the film; we should pick up hints and clues that we didn’t notice the first time. A second viewing of Shutter Island will likely only infuriate. It just doesn’t work.

But despite the – let’s face it – ridiculousness of the final twist, such is Scorsese’ talent that he still makes the reveal absolutely compelling cinema. In fact, the flashback sequence that occurs at the end of the film is, in my opinion, the picture’s best moment. It helps that the cast are all incredible. DiCaprio, although not as unpredictable a foil to Scorsese as DeNiro, is great. I’m reluctant to list off the other actors who appear in the film, as their appearances are both brief and pivotal to the film’s surprises. Let’s just say that if they’re in the film, they’re brilliant. So to everyone waxing nostalgic about the director’s “good ol’ days”, I say that Shutter Island is dark, disturbing and very, very weird. Sounds like vintage Scorsese to me.

4.5/5

What a great movie. Exciting and gripping. It's good to watch a movie were you don't see the end coming and not predict it half way through. Love all Leonardo's movies because he is a good actor. Looks good too I must say :) Now that I think about it it's definitely one to watch again when you know the ending, and pick up the things in the plot you missed.

I was hesitant to watch this as it starred Leonardo DiCaprio, but I'm so glad I did. Truly enthralling psychological thriller, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Dark, suspenseful, definitely one to watch more than once to truly understand it.

i usually find this genre to be rather boring due to the script restraints. Generally the titles are all very similar, but refreshingly enough i found this one to be a true psycho shocker is the true sense of the phrase. Very good performances from the cast especially leonardo - brilliant. Well worth the watch............. (but put your intellect hats on for this one, it's worth 'absorbing')

Talk about an awesome movie. Martin Scorsese has given us a different kind of movie that although not on par with his greatest works like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, but Shutter Island is a great throwback to the classic thrillers of his time. Wonderful direction, great acting and an awesome script with an unbelievable twist.

Same sentiments as mine on Fight Club : 'Gripping rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. A character with a complex and tangled mind who is both out of control and absolutely orderly. Forget the popcorn, it'll be forgotten and cold by the time this movie ends.' Brilliant. Layered like a lasagne. I watched it twice inside of 24-hours and the second time round was like watching a completely different movie.

Shutter Island initially implies it's going to be a scary thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat, holding on for dear life to your date/partner. The truth is, it's a neat but largely uninspiring mystery with a couple of layers of unexpected plot twists. It's quite well done, the acting is good, although it centres almost exclusively on Leo DiCaprio despite also having access to the charms of Ben Kingsley. There are not any major plot holes that I could see and it will leave you quite satisfied. But it won't leave you contemplating any big questions and it won't change your life ;-)

Shutter Island was a well played crime investigation/mysterious thriller. I'm not sure why this was only recommended three stars because it delivers a fantastic plot that is explored through character, character development, story and also theme. The movie had me on the edge of my seat not sure knowning how it was unfolded until the end when it delivered at the climax. A very epicly suspenseful movie.

Who would have thought. 5 years ago, you couldn't drag me to see a Leo DiCaprio film, and now he is teaming up with Martin Scorsese. I wonder if Leo has matured and improved, or was it just he was never offered the parts to stretch his talent. A great film with a great supporting cast. It builds the tension from the very opening scene, and manages to maintain this throughout. And this just adds to the amazing plot twist (no more said on that - no spoilers). Just a great suspense/who-dunnit/drama.

I enjoyed Shutter Island but the DVD kept stopping and I had to wait until it started again. It has happened before to me and I thought it was my DVD player because it was getting a bit old. I have since bought a new player and it happened again so obviously it is the disk itself. When this happens it does take some of the enjoyment out of watching the film.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. On one hand, we have a deep psychological thriller starring the brilliant Di Caprio (one of my all time favourite actors), and on the other, the terrible pacing and editing makes the film almost unbearable to watch. I lost count of how many times I yawned despite all the things that happened. In summary, it was good, but it could be a lot more.

It warrants 4 stars for the sheer thrill of wondering where the plot is going and the suspense that's created and wondering who are the insane? Great acting from all and there are no small roles in this film. Leonardo Di Caprio is never disappointing and he knows how to flesh out a character. Even when you have decided that you understood the ending, there's still a little doubt ! A film that keeps you thinking through the plot & storyline long after it's over. A great production all round. Rivetting viewing.

A better movie than most critics rated it but I'm so used to the yanks teflon coating the main characters, that the truth came out of left field. I'm not normally much of a Leo fan but i have to say i enjoyed this movie. maybe i'm not as switched on as some of the other reveiwers but i wasn't expecting that particular outcome. to me it was one of those great movies where you know something isn't quite right but you just can't quite work out what is going on. I would definately recommend.

This is a fantastic concept executed poorly. Nobody seems that comfortable in their roles, especially Leo, although Michelle Williams is quite good as the wife and Ben Kingsley turns in a fine performance as usual in his small part (gotta love the Brits). Could have been a really taught thriller had they shaved about 45 mins off the run time.

The story is a little predictable, but the cast and direction more than makes up for it. Visually stimulating and entertaining. I still thoroughly enjoyed it even after the 3rd viewing...

This movie fits in the same genre as 'North by North-West', along with the other 1950's suspense classics. It is not a modern-style thriller; rather, it is set in 1954 and has been made in the style of the day, and very effectively, too. You can try to guess the outcome of the story if you like, but it's not until the end that it all makes sense. And then you will spend all night playing scenes back in your mind, so that you need to watch it again the next day to really appreciate how cleverly this film has been directed and acted. 5 stars.

Completely predictable. Di Caprio puts in a solid (if not, typical) performance. The direction is a little weird but that's deliberate (you'll know something's not right immediately when watching this).

Agree with other reviewers - thought this ws going to be scary but it wasn't. Kind of guessed what was going on but didn't. Was he really mad or not? Was it all made up to keep him there??

We really enjoyed this movie. It turned out how we guessed, but until the very end we weren't sure. Very good story. We thought it was going to be a horror movie, but thankfully it wasn't.

A good movie but what I feared was behind the mystery, turned out to be the case. I prefer unpredictability and originality n a mystery. The explanation behind the strange occurances was used in other movies including one I saw as a boy which was in the days of black

Incredible movie! Kept me guessing right to the very end. Di Caprio, as always, is intense and believable. Great plot, locations, cinematography. Ticked all the boxes. And rewatching it a second time was just as rewarding. Full marks from me.

The trailer makes the film look like a supernatural horror, which it is not (thankfully). It is more of a psychological, mind bending thriller. It really made me think and I am still not 100% sure of how to interpret the movie (it gives clues to two different interpretations, but doesn't really resolve which one it is). A great (if somewhat confusing) movie that will make you think.

Loved this movie, although it is not at all like the previews implied! It is not a movie for all, but if you love intrigue and movies that mess with your head, you'll love this one. And for those that didn't like the ending, think a little deeper.

Disturbing and chilling movie. Although we picked the twist, the story was still intriguing and executed brilliantly. Fantastic cinematography and acting didn't let it down either. Definitely not a feel good movie, but exceptionally entertaining.

Very disappointing. Ludicrous plot. When there was a dream sequence in the first 20 mins I knew this would be bad. Great cast and all that, as you expect from Scorcese, but it just got too silly, too quickly.

Thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as Leo De Caprio as a US Marshall investigates the disappearance of of a mental assylum patient on Shutter Island. The story twists and turns and keeps you in until the final minutes when all is revealed and it is not what you think. Recommended viewing.

Excellent, confusing, intriguing Thriller. Fantastic cast..and it's a Scorsese so yep looks like millions of dollars. The end twist is a killer. Hard to find any weak points. I just loved it. It's smartly directed, superbe storytelling.

Well it's Scorsese so it looks good, and both Leo and Mark Ruffalo are solid as always. Unfortunately the plot, although tense at times, is rather formulaic, and gives away 'the twist' by half way... Worth a watch, but certainly not the supernatural thriller that it was advertised as being.

A very clever movie. As the DVD blurb says 'nothing is quite what it seems'. For much of the film various 'nightmare' scenes seem very silly. But towards the end it starts making sense (in a fashion).

I read the book and had no idea of how it ended till the end . Very close to the book with just a few changes. But I think people who have not read the book will be a little confused. Not very well edited I think which tended to spoil what should have been a gripping suspensful movie . Still a good time with very good actors I give it 3 stars.

Too clever by half - except that is isn't. The 'twist' hoved into view like the Titanic about halfway through the movie and from that point on it was a case of "are we there yet".

Martin Scorcese has his name on this merde? Christ, how the mighty are fallen. It's like a seminar on Overwritten Hollywood crap 101 except more boring. I'm going into a coma just remembering how bad it was. Just don't. Read a book instead. Truly. Or, hey, that button you've been meaning to get around to sewing back on? Pat the dog. Anything but watch this.

I was expecting an 'edge of your seat' thriller after seeing the previews on TV. I was confused for most of the movie, which at just over 2 hours, is too long. I was disappointed that it wasn't scary or more thrilling, seeing as it has some good actors in it.
