The year is 1901and legendary retired gunfighter Wayne is diagnosed with cancer, and wants to live out the rest of his days in peace and quiet. He cannot escape his reputation however, and his services are soon called upon to take care of town bad guys Boone and O'Brien. Wayne must decide between comfort and his own personal code of honour. Needless to say, moral duty prevails and Wayne quickly goes into action. Based on the novel by Glendon Swarthout and featuring first-rate performances by supporting cast members Bacall and Stewart. Beautifully produced, THE SHOOTIST garnered a place on the National Board of Review Award's 10 Best Films of the Year List.

the cast is well assembled, old and new. the last movie John Wayne starred in, a sort of obituary which related to his own cancer. He went out with all guns blazing. The cast could feel by their acting that this was JW last hurrah.

Its one of the best John Wayne Movies made.........Its TERRIFIC!!!!!!!! Co-stars did a great job too.

I think this is the only movie were the Duke dies. Anyhow him and and Lauren Backall makes a pair worth watching. Great Story.
