Strong violence
Yesterday was about honor. Today is about justice. Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) - an ace marksman living in self-exile in the Arkansas wilderness after causing the death of an innocent person - is persuaded by his former associates that they need his help to prevent an assassination and who is subsequently double-crossed and framed for the presidential assassination he was trying to prevent. He is forced to go on the run while trying to track down the real killer and discover the truth about who betrayed him.

Suprisingly this was a really good movie. Action packed from the beginning to the end with some good blowing ups along the way. The DVD I got also stopped and started and missed bits near the end. Definitely worth watching.

Faded off towards end when it became predictible Hollywood ending.
DVD version tranfer was poor, pixelisation, jaged lines in many of the action scenes. Hopefully the BlueRay version is better

It's a great idea that doesn't seem to hold up in any exciting way. Reasonable unrealistic action makes it interesting but annoying at times. Good cast and solid performances are its major contribution. I'd put it at the end of the queue but not completely out.

Although this film is a stack of cliched plot devices it turns out to be slightly above average for the run of action dramas. There is the wronged soldier, the evil senator in league with the corrupt senior brass involved in an underlying conspiracy, the gilrfriend in peril and the all action man hero; car chases, helicopter assaults, a token Hispanic. Wow! what could you possibly want more from Hollywood except some new ideas.
There were some echoes to the real life assassination of John F Kennedy. Swagger was duped into becoming the patsy in a building and position at the window, much like the alleged shooting position at the book depository in Dallas Texas. Like Oswald, who was a government agent, Swagger is supposed to be keeping his eye on things, just as Oswald was charged with infiltrating a group of right wing nuts to see what they were up to and ended up being set up as the shooter. Oswald was silenced by police confidant and informer Jack Ruby. In the film Swagger, as the hero who cannot die, was lucky not to suffer the same fate when he was shot by a corrupt cop. Oswald was also implicated in a shoot-out with a policeman, Officer Tippet. Oswald was portrayed by the FBI/Warren Commission as a great marksman, in other words, a shooter, a sniper.
People like to play with the idea that one man could go up against a governent with only his own natural abilities and resources and against all odds defeat the corruption which abounds there. This idea gives us vicarious thrills and a warm fuzzy feeling inside and is OK as a form of light entertainment. Our reality though is much different. We have only to consider at a lower level what ususally happens to the lowliest whistle-blower going up against their company.

Excellent movie with a balanced mix of the essential elements (Actors, intrigue, betrayal, action, etc). Notable however are the extras, and particularly the political message that ended up on the cutting room floor. Take time to review the deleted scenes!

This film starts with one of the oldest cliches in the book (soldier shows picture of girlfriend so you just know he'll be dead within minutes) and goes downhill from there. A tiresome vigilante storyline, where a stoic good guy gets framed by corrupt bad guys (Danny Glover playing EVIL to the max, badly) and there's a love story crammed in to make fans feel less guilty for getting turned on by the endless parade of extras getting shot in the head. This is "entertainment" for the lowest common denominator. Awful.

Particularly stupid moments in this film include the dog fetching Mark Wahlberg a cool Bud from the fridge in his mountain top hideaway. What a surprise! Not just an action flick, but a well researched action thriller.
It's hard to believe the guy who starred in this movie and helped secure The Departed as a brilliant movie is the same Mark Wahlberg that was jumping around our screens singing pop/rap as Marky Mark with his Funky Bunch...
This was First blood with a better plot and stronger characters.
Add to that some well known actors playing decidedly bad guys and this movie certainly packs a punch on many levels.
There is no option to give it 4.5 stars, so I'm going with the full five.... Great movie

A gritty action film, which pushes all the right cliches:
A disaffected patriot with special skills;
A rookie Government agent who's learning the ropes;
A senior Government official who is only interested in lining his own pockets; and an off-limits love interest that slowly comes around.
All in all a very enjoyable film.
