Shine is based on the true story of Australian pianist David Helfgott. We see the early, traumatic years of David, a child prodigy whose father abuses him and his siblings with the memory of his childhood in Europe and the loss of his family in concentration camps. Eventually breaking away from his father, David goes to study overseas. He returns to Australia only after suffering a breakdown and is institutionalised. Many years later he is released and through several twists of fate he starts playing a piano in a bar before finally returning to the concert hall.

Wow! I was not expecting to enjoy this movie but got it because i love Geffrey Rush. It's a masterpiece! Superb acting, great storyline, perfect balance of emotive content. Totally going out to buy it!

I have meet the divine David & can say that Mr Rush's depiction of him is EXACT. A beautiful movie leaving you with feelings of anger (at his abusive father) yet laughter at his innocence to life. A wonderful true story about a true genius & gifted man that said in my company when I realized who it was ........."humility Helen humility".

A great series of performances from Noah Taylor, Geoffrey Rush, John Gielgud, et al, makes this film a very enjoyable piece of domestic cinema. I quite liked the storytelling, although recent facts have cast doubt on how accurately the film reflects the real events. Then again, most films are not meant to be factual inquests and I must say that this movie deserves a place on any Australiana-lover's top shelf.

As I am very partial to Rachmaninov's music particularly his third symphony and used to play the piano I loved this show. Geoffry Rush is in fine form playing the suffering budding pianist who is suffering under his overbaering father.

There is someone who found the way out of mental illness, maybe through love. How lucky he is. Others, like my sister and cousin are engulfed by it since decades and cannot find a way out.
