Nothing exceptional but not wasting your time either. Robert downing getting better with age.
There have been so many Sherlock Holmes movies over the years, some have been good, some have been terrible. I was quite impressed in this one. Nothing special but quite well done.
Again Robert Downy jr,and Jude Law where a perfect mach in this film loved ever moment it is fantastic.
I saw this at the cinema with great trepidation because Guy Ritchie was directing, but emerged feeling entertained to death. Hugely stylish, superbly performed by Robert Downey (in a mad, wild-eyed way) with Jude Law doing a great job as his sensible sidekick. Lots of trickery that persuades you that you really are in Victorian London. Total escapism, and I'm sorry I was rude about Guy Ritchie.
Forgot I already owned this one! Very entertaining movie. Robert Downey is brilliant.
bored from the beginning then gave up on this one....
Love it! Even though I like BBC Sherlock the best, this one is a close second!
Disappointed in this movie, kept falling asleep and did not watch it all the way through.
A very different take on the Sherlock Holmes character wonderfully acted by Robert Downey Junior. Highly recommended. Very enjoyable! 4 stars!
this is not Sherlock Holmes, or anything like it!
Fantastically enjoyable. There's humor, action and great acting all adding up to make a very entertaining film. I can't wait for the sequel to be available.
I love Robert Downie Jnr and enjoyed watching him as the quirkie troubled Sherlock Holmes.
Awesome movie, watched a couple of times
We didn't finish watching it, it was terrible, it jumped to much, we have no idea what it was about. the makers should never have called it Sherlock Holmes.
This is flashy film making, as you would expect from the director of 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, with quick cutting, slow motion, unusual angles and other techniques Guy Ritchie has used before, but ultimately the tricks can’t hide the fact there is lots of bubbles but no champagne. Worst of all however, under close scrutiny, the denouement just does not make logical sense so that the explanations solving the mystery left me unsatisfied. I could not suspend my disbelief long enough to take the movie any more seriously than an animated television cartoon show. On a positive note, the main actors did a good job of their characters, and the film looked fine, but in the end it was not enough to carry the movie and I was looking forward to the seeing the credits roll much earlier than I should have.
mmmm, this was ok, not what i was expecting at all. was fun, but dragged out for me, i agree with the people that say they could have cut 30mins out of it!
still, i am glad i have watched it. fight scene near the start pretty impressive
What a fun movie (if you ignore the satan worship)! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some scenes, if not most of them, are clearly green screens, but the banter between Holmes and Watson makes it worth watching. Really looking forward to seeing the second installment.
Stylishly directed by Guy Ritchie and with a great screenplay full of wit and charm, Sherlock Holmes is a great update to the famous character that is totally adapted to modern audiences, but shouldn't alienate older fans. A really good mystery film that's worth more than one watch.
funny, witty, most enjoyable. Suitable for the whole family (teenagers)
Suprisingly good movie. Not normally a fan of Jude Law but he was quite good in this. The stylised London is quite well done. If you watch it just for entertainment it is a good movie.
A bit slow at times. But a good movie. The second one is much better.
Boring, hard to hear and dark graphics makes for really LONG viewing. Not feeling this one guys, thought I would enjoy it - had a decent concept just badly exercuted.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The only thing was Robert Downey Jr's voice was a little hard to hear/understand at times.
The movie was too long - it would have been better 20 to 30 minutes shorter. I struggled to keep watching after the first 40 minutes but stuck it out. It was very disjointed - perhaps poor editing. I thought Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law were well matched and I enjoyed the last 40 minutes of the movie. Overall, okay but not fantastic.
while this is a well made movie and the acting is fine, it just didn't grab me or my husband.
I stuck it out till the end and have tried to put my finger on why we didn't like it.
Maybe age had something to do with it..the bastardisation of Sherlock Holmes may be the reason. Just a little too far fetched for our liking.
The DVD that arrived started getting passed the Village-Roadshow logo then stopped Disc could not be read.
Sherlock Holmes seems to have quite good reviews however I could have fallen asleep! The characters were just too overblown and over the top for me. Too 'acted.' Not enough heart and soul connecting me to the movie.
I love this film. I can't wait for the sequel.
It took me a little while for me to get into this film. Guy Ritchie’s direction is flashy but distracting and lacking subtlety. However, once the game was afoot it became a really enjoyable action adventure - provided you’re prepared to just go along for the ride. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law looked great together and appeared to be having a lot of fun. Mark Strong is a great villain. However if you love your Sherlock Holmes, the BBC TV series ‘Sherlock’ with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is far, far superior.
Always up for a good Sherlock Holmes and this was yet another! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Here's what I expected - a lot of clever witty dialogue between Downey Jr and Law and a fast paced action packed interesting who-dunnit with clues.
Here's what we got... A slow moving, occasionally boring dark largely uninteresting movie with random splashes of fighting and no real clues which randomly explains everything in the end without all that much of a clue to work any of it out yourself.
Now don't get me wrong there is still some amusing dialogue and it's not totally awful but know what to expect.
My wife only watched half of it and I had to watch the second half on my own.
It's over 2 hours. And it feels that way. I think diamondeb was watching a different movie...
Boring !!!! Turned off after 40 mins
Surprisingly good and entertaining. Actors are great together.
Very Cleverly Authored. The Plot is predictable but enough variations to keep one's interest. Highly entertaining.
was very entertaining and fast paced enjoyed it very much
I heard a lot of bad reviews regarding this one and was apprehensive but after watching the movie they're were nt justified. I thought it kept pace well, pushed the supernatural red herring well and had a few laughs too, Reproductions or London were great.
Great chemistry between the 3 main actors - no wonder they're making a sequel. London looked suitably industrial & grimy. Slightly dull in the middle - about 20-30mins too long for my liking. If you like these actors you'll like this.
For Holmes lovers this is great. A little differant but has plenty of acyion. A great film.
Very good movie, but totally different to the Sherlock Holmes we know...
Good realistic scenery, good stunts and SFX, a touch of romance and plenty of humour.
Yes it froze again (at 47 min similar to the other movies I had issues with) but it played fine in he Blue ray drive of my computer ????
So all up a very good movie and a nice length (bit over 2hrs)
What the !!!!! Boring rubbish !!!!
Not a patch on the new BBC Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch(Yes, that's right) and the wonderful Martin Freeman (x The Office)
The creative team understands the fabric of Holmes and the up-dating is superbly handled. Ditch this. Get that!
True British humour and wit, with an enjoyable version of sherlock holmes.
Downey Jr and Law make a great team. We thouroughly enjoyed it.
Too dark for us - this is the one video out of all that we have so far rented, that we just could not watch to the end. I'm sure it may become a 'cult' movie somewhere along the way, but we found it depressingly 'dark'. I would rate it at about two stars.
The first 20 minutes of this was great and looked promising, but the remainder of the movie seemed overly stretched out. I mean, what was the bare knuckle fight all about? I suspect this was added in so that Robert Downie Jnr could show off his new physique, but served little to the story. The fight sequences was also overly long and indulgent. On the plus side, the scenery was fantastic.
could only watch a third of this as cd kept freezing
I still prefer Sherlock Holmes as we always knew him.
A bit dark, more like Sherlock Holmes meets Harry Potter and the DaVinci Code.
Worth watching for action/ mystery/adventure fans. Perhaps a bit over done.
didnt like the demonic overtones
sherlock has been given a modern update that doesn't really seem to work. watson acts more like an enemy than a friend and the plot wasn't really enough to keep me interested.
Not really my cup of tea but movie was good.
Robert Downey Jnr is a great actor and really makes this movie.
Enjoyable and unusual take on Sherlock Holmes. Lots happening, great action and a good soundtrack (if you like gypsy style music)
You have got to be kidding.... Sherlock Shmuck more like it. What makes these dumb 'new age' writers think they can improve on the original stories? Wake up guys, these things don't need improving, thats why they are still around after all these years. Frankly, don't know why people waste their time and money on producing such rubbish. 90 minutes of my life that I won't get back.
couldnt get into it at all
Holmes as an eccentric difficult to like character may be true to Conan Doyles telling but the modern TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch worked better for me than Downey Jrs creation. That said Downey Jr is good enough to carry the film without Guy Ritchies indulgences.
long winded and labourious.
Puts a different perspective on the main characters. Great computer graphics. I love the way they recreate London of that era. Very good action sequences. Keeps you thinking till the end when all is revealed.
Great movie for the whole family - better than we expected!
I didn't enjoy this movie much at all.
I give it two stars
Fans of Sherlock Holmes will be disgusted with this rubbish, Jeremy Brett will be turning in his grave and Edward Hardwick must be laughing out loud and Arthur Conan Doyle would be disgusted, If your interested in Holmes get the TV Series also available on Bigpond, now they are good, No great !!
Having said that it's OK for an action flick with a bit of a difference
DEFINITELY 2 STARS
just 'Iron Man' in a Victorian setting - Jude Law was good though
I was really surprised by how Much I really loved this movie! Story line was great
Disappointing movie. Story could have a better substance.
its was great always enjoyed Roberts acting ....plenty there to keep your total interest 4star
Very very good! I love Robert Downey Jr. In this! Great acting once again! Very good vision of Holmes. Worth watching- Deferentially! :)
Very dark version of Holmes - well acted.
Not bad but a little difficult to follow - too many changes of scene so you could not get a feel for the movie - it was too fragmented to be a great film.
ZGood action coupled with intelligent story. Loved it!
A little disappointing and not quite what I expected.
Really enjoyed it more than I thought. I like the twist of his (sought of) magic powers.
Dialogue impossible to follow. Not the Holmes and Watson I expected. 19th Century setting with 21st C gymicks has no appeal
A bit disappointing, not as good as I thought it would be. I thought the series that was done for TV was much better.
loved the quick witted humour between holmes and watson, very well written, wonderful adaptation of a classic. worth watching more than once!
Entertaining enough and kept me watching til the end.
The action/fight scenes were very violent and not at all what we expected. The movie focused too much on the fighting and the plot was easily lost. Jude law was a believable Dr Watson, Downey was quite unsettling as the often drugged out Sherlock.
Sherlock Holmes is my favourite fictional character and I know the short stories and novels very well. I'm not a Holmes purist but I didn't like Downey's modernised, rollicking and highly physical interpretation of Holmes. Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes was much better - more quietly intense and obsessively focused. Anyway the film was a piece of fun with some good adventure, action sequences - but the talented Downey can do a better interpretation of the complex Holmes character.
Hmmm ... Jude Law excellent, script good for what it is. Hard to hear dialogue at times
I really didn't enjoy this at all! Just too bizarre and I found it hard to follow at times. I enjoyed Jude Law's
Very enjoyable - but to be honest, the lastes Sherlock Holmes series set in the current time is vastly superior!
Quirky, and a bit confusing at times, but worth watching. Robert Downy Jr was very entertaining.
Without knowing a lot of detail about the original Sherlock Holmes character and books I enjoyed the movie but can see that it 'modernised' the character of Sherlock. Guy Ritchie did a good job of depicting Victorian London and making for a suspenseful movie.
Unexpected casting works really well. It's not a traditional Sherlock Holmes, but it's very entertaining. Downey Jr and Law make a good combination in screen and seem to have as much fun making this as we did watching it. It really is how big blockbusters should be done more often.
loved this but not for under 12's in my opnion
Actually very well done, with great dialogue and action scenes that didn't bore the crap out of me. Downer Jnr. again proves just why his career has had such a successful resurgence, playing the brilliantly nuanced Holmes to perfection. Jude Law is very good, as is Rachel McAdams. You gotta think quick, as some of the information comes through the dialogue very quickly. Great score by Hans Zimmer.
Strange movie. Too far from the original story!
Interesting movie, but could have been shorter and with less action/fight scenes. the street fighting just slowed/lost the plot abit. Jude law was great as Dr Watson, Downey was made for the role as a drugged out mental Sherlock (although at no point do you see him using).
A great disappointment. The storyline and characters are what kills it. They are closer to super heroes than humans. They did not suspend my disbelief for one moment. In short, a lot of nonsense.
Great fun. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law great together. Would watch this again.
I didn't expect to like this movie, the story was a bit blah but everything else was fantastic. Loved it. Watched it three times. Plan to buy it. Fantastic.
enjoyable, as expected by title. Keeps one absorbed
Very good movie Robert downey jr was outstanding one of his best roles to date
The worst Sherlock Holmes ever made. Garbage!!
Simply exceptional. The screenplay was very involved and didn't dumb down the theorising for anyone. Only a true detective could have figured out the mystery. Completely fulfilling as a result. The chemistry between Downey Jr and Law was a constant chuckle. Made not knowing exactly what to expect that much more enjoyable. Full marks from me.
heres an idea, lets make an 'action' sherlock holmes movie, with lots of fighting and plenty of explosions. thats what people like, isnt it?
instead of special effects they should have tried for a more interesting script.
i was bored by the halfway mark.
Super! Very unexpected action scenes but Robert Downey Jr is quirky and wonderful, as is Jude Law. As is the movie, generally.
Very far from Doyle (and even Rathbone, for that matter), but with Downey and Law how can you not be swept up. Enjoyed it.
Just because this is set in old England doesn’t mean it is a Jane Austin story. It’s not pretty and polite like pride
I'm not a big fan of this type of movies but I like Jude Law and so decided to watch it...gotta tell ya I loved it...it was a brilliant piece of cinematography
Loved it! I don't like any of Guy Ritchies other films. It seems like he ditched Madonna and started directing 5 star movies! Robert Downey Jr is amazing. Very surprised others have rated it poorly? My husband and really enjoyed it.
Not at all what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. Long movie but enough action scenes to keep you awake. :)
great entertainment and Downey was terrific - the length of the film is fine, which confirms the movie gets you in.
How come this is only three stars?
Its a four atleast!
Great filming, average story line- if your'e after an afternoon fill in this is good, but not a nighttime WOW movie- setup at the end for the sequel??
Ok I would'nt rave about it. Went a bit too long.
Real Sherlock fans would not like it.
I thought Jude Law was very good , Robert Downey Junior fabulous as usual.
Hated it. I want 2 hours of my life back. Can I give it less than one star???Such intriguing preview, great casting, interesting topic....and I would never ever watch it again, let alone any sequels. What was Guy Ritchie thinking? Stick to gritty British crime son. So disappointing.
A witty and very different take on Sherlock Holmes - fast paced action and amusing banter between Holmes and Watson makes this movie really enjoyable. Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law are fantastic as are the rest of the cast. Guy Ritchie hasn't let any detail slip, the cinematography is creative and interesting and the sets and costumes are magnificent.
Was quite slow and boring the first hour. Why making a 2 hours flick with so little substance? Jude Law as a doctor? Come ON! To put in your collection next to Van Helsing and The league of extraordinary gentlemen. If you liked those 2, well SH is for you. Won't watch twice that's for sure.
i think we watched this about 5 times. fantastic movie, well acted and very well interpreted from the books. LOVED IT
Wow! Brilliant! This portrayed Sherlock in a way that was so more likely meant originally. Dr Watson was not a blubbering idiot but someone you would expect to be considered a war hero (and a Doctor) as originally written. This is one of those movies that you watch and say "Let's watch it again!"
Very clever story and narration. Very enjoyable to watch.
more fun than i was thinking it would be- held together by a great task. I'd see the sequel
Love Robert Downey Junior
Fun and more fun, I cannot recommend this more if you like these kind of films. Once again Robert Downey Jr. proves his acting ability, backed ever so strongly by the talents of Jude Law. It's exciting, cheesy (in a good way) and well paced. Guy Ritchie's take on the classic books may be a bit... different, but its gritty, modern and well worth the watch!
Good movie, enjoyed Downey
great movie and leaves it open for a second one. something different and not the same old thing you would normally watch. really enjoyed this one
Good combination with Jude and Rob but the movie took too long to develop a good story. The ending was dissapointing and the ending seemed hurried as they were trying not to drag the story any longer. Shame as the calculated fight scenes were great, just the story could have ended better.
A very good adaption of Sherlock Holmes. Its better to have characters with flaws, more true to life and more believable. Great acting by all involved and surprised by how different it was from other "Holmes" movies.
An interesting interpretation. If you forget verything you thought you knew about Holmes, then this movie is fun. If not, then you'll spend the whole movie saying "But XX doesn't act that way!"
This movie was amazing, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! It was like a psychological maze at the end. Definitely recommended!!
A tad long a drawn out, struggled to get into it and kept looking at the clock.. are we done yet, how much longer, get to the point.
Might give it another chance to redeme itself, but when your more entertained by a sleeping cat is it really worth the effort. Gravely disappointed by a movie i was so looking forward to seeing.
I loved this movie, saw it twice at the movies and 4 times over the weekend. You do need to watch it a couple of times to get everything but its a fresh take on the story of Sherlock Holmes. Shows Holmes as he really was a bit weird, a druggie, a drunk and yes thoroughly self absorbed. Never expected it from Guy Ritchie but he did well.
Find it hard to write a review on this take of the usual Sherlock Holmes character, very confussing story line and certainly violent in places, I didn't really enjoy it myself but my Husband wasn't going to let it beat him so he watched it again and found he understood it better the second time around, so I guess it appeals more to a male audience, not light family entertainment and you certainly have to listen well to the dialogue.
Good movie but it strayed too far from the Sherlock Holmes character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Hard to follow until everything is revealed in the last five minuets.
Excellent! Very entertaining.
