Well, well, well, what’s all this then? A smart action movie? I’m already suspicious. Just what are you hiding Holmes? Padding in the second act? A lazy dénouement? Come on, out with it! Since when does an action movie respect, nay, intrigue its audience? Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes may not exactly be cerebral, but it’s surprisingly thoughtful, articulate, and dare I say it, clever. In a year in which actioners featured robots with arthritis and sinking ice, Sherlock Holmes might as well be considered a work of genius.

Ritchie’s take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary figure Sherlock Holmes is energetic and vivacious. In fact, the story of the great detective feels less like a police procedural and more like a James Bond film. Makes sense really, as Ritchie’s Holmes is about as different to previous adaptations as Casino Royale was to its predecessor in the Bond series, Die Another Day. The style is indeed uniquely Ritchie (plenty of slow-motion; expanded explanations of scenes that took place earlier) yet it always feels faithful to the source material. Perhaps that can be attributed to Doyle’s rich slate of characters, each of whom have been on life-support for too long and have finally been given a shot of adrenaline to the heart.

The film begins with detectives-for-hire Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) stopping the dastardly Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) from murdering another young women in the name of black magic. Blackwood is a worthy foe – just not worthy enough it seems. Having wrapped up their final case, Watson is ready to move away from Holmes and begin his life with fiancée Mary (Kelly Reilly). Holmes doesn’t dislike Mary, but he certainly doesn’t like the way in which she’s stealing away his other half. Having early retirement imposed upon him, Holmes retreats into his bedroom to experiment on gunpowder, flies and his dog – that is when he’s not bare-knuckle boxing with overbearing brutes. Consider it a mid-life crisis for a mad genius.

Blackwood is hung for his crimes and is soon declared dead by Watson himself. But, as is the case with all movie nasties, the dead don’t stay dead long. Blackwood is (supposedly) living large and loving it, causing havoc and spreading fear throughout the streets of London. Holmes and Watson’s final case is reopened, and even though widespread chaos and unspeakable evil threatens the lives of all in England, Holmes is more than a little excited to be back in action with the reluctant Watson in tow. The audience is then treated to the duos impressive powers of deduction and a mystery that is genuinely mysterious.

Robert Downey Jr. applies himself to the role of Holmes with aplomb. It’s an intriguing alternate take on Downey’s stable of frantic, sarcastic, aloof heroes. He could have easily given us Tony Stark with an English accent, but he doesn’t. Stark is overjoyed with his own intellect; glad to be smarter than everyone around him. Holmes is similar; except that he seems angry that no one else comes close to challenging his brilliance. I could imagine Law perhaps once being a frontrunner for the role of Holmes, but I feel he would have been too smarmy or even too charming. He’s a revelation here as Watson, reminding audiences that he was always at his best in supporting roles (The Talented Mr. Ripley, A.I., Road to Perdition).

Mark Strong and Eddie Marsan (as Inspector Lestrade) position themselves as two of the best character actors working today. Rachel McAdams, as Holmes former love and con-woman Irene Adler does not fare as well as the other cast members. For someone supposed to be Holmes’ equal, she never seems quite as quick, or frankly, as devious as he. McAdams is a talented actress terribly miscast; imagine if the far feistier Carey Mulligan or the smouldering Melanie Laurent had scored the role instead.

The mechanics of the plot feel organic and genuinely surprising, which is the least we should expect from Sherlock Holmes and more than we should expect from an action film as exciting as this. The fight sequences and action set pieces are gripping and plentiful; perhaps only the final showdown is a disappointment. The film is far from perfect; the Irene Adler subplot is tiresome, the finale is somewhat unsatisfying and there are moments where the script could have been funnier, as it too often relies on the charm of the stars for laughs. But Sherlock Holmes is worth celebrating. It heralds the return of a literary giant as well as a formerly beloved director. It is also a homecoming celebration for Downey Jr., who finally certifies himself as a bankable leading man; an intensely watchable action star, comedian and dramatic actor. The only crime here is that it’s taken him this long to arrive.

4/5

I saw this at the cinema with great trepidation because Guy Ritchie was directing, but emerged feeling entertained to death. Hugely stylish, superbly performed by Robert Downey (in a mad, wild-eyed way) with Jude Law doing a great job as his sensible sidekick. Lots of trickery that persuades you that you really are in Victorian London. Total escapism, and I'm sorry I was rude about Guy Ritchie.

This is flashy film making, as you would expect from the director of 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, with quick cutting, slow motion, unusual angles and other techniques Guy Ritchie has used before, but ultimately the tricks can’t hide the fact there is lots of bubbles but no champagne. Worst of all however, under close scrutiny, the denouement just does not make logical sense so that the explanations solving the mystery left me unsatisfied. I could not suspend my disbelief long enough to take the movie any more seriously than an animated television cartoon show. On a positive note, the main actors did a good job of their characters, and the film looked fine, but in the end it was not enough to carry the movie and I was looking forward to the seeing the credits roll much earlier than I should have.

What a fun movie (if you ignore the satan worship)! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some scenes, if not most of them, are clearly green screens, but the banter between Holmes and Watson makes it worth watching. Really looking forward to seeing the second installment.

Stylishly directed by Guy Ritchie and with a great screenplay full of wit and charm, Sherlock Holmes is a great update to the famous character that is totally adapted to modern audiences, but shouldn't alienate older fans. A really good mystery film that's worth more than one watch.

The movie was too long - it would have been better 20 to 30 minutes shorter. I struggled to keep watching after the first 40 minutes but stuck it out. It was very disjointed - perhaps poor editing. I thought Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law were well matched and I enjoyed the last 40 minutes of the movie. Overall, okay but not fantastic.

while this is a well made movie and the acting is fine, it just didn't grab me or my husband. I stuck it out till the end and have tried to put my finger on why we didn't like it. Maybe age had something to do with it..the bastardisation of Sherlock Holmes may be the reason. Just a little too far fetched for our liking.

It took me a little while for me to get into this film. Guy Ritchie’s direction is flashy but distracting and lacking subtlety. However, once the game was afoot it became a really enjoyable action adventure - provided you’re prepared to just go along for the ride. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law looked great together and appeared to be having a lot of fun. Mark Strong is a great villain. However if you love your Sherlock Holmes, the BBC TV series ‘Sherlock’ with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is far, far superior.

Disappointed. Here's what I expected - a lot of clever witty dialogue between Downey Jr and Law and a fast paced action packed interesting who-dunnit with clues. Here's what we got... A slow moving, occasionally boring dark largely uninteresting movie with random splashes of fighting and no real clues which randomly explains everything in the end without all that much of a clue to work any of it out yourself. Now don't get me wrong there is still some amusing dialogue and it's not totally awful but know what to expect. My wife only watched half of it and I had to watch the second half on my own. It's over 2 hours. And it feels that way. I think diamondeb was watching a different movie...

The first 20 minutes of this was great and looked promising, but the remainder of the movie seemed overly stretched out. I mean, what was the bare knuckle fight all about? I suspect this was added in so that Robert Downie Jnr could show off his new physique, but served little to the story. The fight sequences was also overly long and indulgent. On the plus side, the scenery was fantastic.

Sherlock Holmes is my favourite fictional character and I know the short stories and novels very well. I'm not a Holmes purist but I didn't like Downey's modernised, rollicking and highly physical interpretation of Holmes. Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes was much better - more quietly intense and obsessively focused. Anyway the film was a piece of fun with some good adventure, action sequences - but the talented Downey can do a better interpretation of the complex Holmes character.

Actually very well done, with great dialogue and action scenes that didn't bore the crap out of me. Downer Jnr. again proves just why his career has had such a successful resurgence, playing the brilliantly nuanced Holmes to perfection. Jude Law is very good, as is Rachel McAdams. You gotta think quick, as some of the information comes through the dialogue very quickly. Great score by Hans Zimmer.

great entertainment and Downey was terrific - the length of the film is fine, which confirms the movie gets you in.

Great filming, average story line- if your'e after an afternoon fill in this is good, but not a nighttime WOW movie- setup at the end for the sequel??

Ok I would'nt rave about it. Went a bit too long. Real Sherlock fans would not like it. I thought Jude Law was very good , Robert Downey Junior fabulous as usual. 3 stars

Hated it. I want 2 hours of my life back. Can I give it less than one star???Such intriguing preview, great casting, interesting topic....and I would never ever watch it again, let alone any sequels. What was Guy Ritchie thinking? Stick to gritty British crime son. So disappointing.

A witty and very different take on Sherlock Holmes - fast paced action and amusing banter between Holmes and Watson makes this movie really enjoyable. Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law are fantastic as are the rest of the cast. Guy Ritchie hasn't let any detail slip, the cinematography is creative and interesting and the sets and costumes are magnificent.

Was quite slow and boring the first hour. Why making a 2 hours flick with so little substance? Jude Law as a doctor? Come ON! To put in your collection next to Van Helsing and The league of extraordinary gentlemen. If you liked those 2, well SH is for you. Won't watch twice that's for sure.

Wow! Brilliant! This portrayed Sherlock in a way that was so more likely meant originally. Dr Watson was not a blubbering idiot but someone you would expect to be considered a war hero (and a Doctor) as originally written. This is one of those movies that you watch and say "Let's watch it again!"

Fun and more fun, I cannot recommend this more if you like these kind of films. Once again Robert Downey Jr. proves his acting ability, backed ever so strongly by the talents of Jude Law. It's exciting, cheesy (in a good way) and well paced. Guy Ritchie's take on the classic books may be a bit... different, but its gritty, modern and well worth the watch!

Good combination with Jude and Rob but the movie took too long to develop a good story. The ending was dissapointing and the ending seemed hurried as they were trying not to drag the story any longer. Shame as the calculated fight scenes were great, just the story could have ended better.

A very good adaption of Sherlock Holmes. Its better to have characters with flaws, more true to life and more believable. Great acting by all involved and surprised by how different it was from other "Holmes" movies.

An interesting interpretation. If you forget verything you thought you knew about Holmes, then this movie is fun. If not, then you'll spend the whole movie saying "But XX doesn't act that way!"

A tad long a drawn out, struggled to get into it and kept looking at the clock.. are we done yet, how much longer, get to the point. Might give it another chance to redeme itself, but when your more entertained by a sleeping cat is it really worth the effort. Gravely disappointed by a movie i was so looking forward to seeing.

I loved this movie, saw it twice at the movies and 4 times over the weekend. You do need to watch it a couple of times to get everything but its a fresh take on the story of Sherlock Holmes. Shows Holmes as he really was a bit weird, a druggie, a drunk and yes thoroughly self absorbed. Never expected it from Guy Ritchie but he did well.

Find it hard to write a review on this take of the usual Sherlock Holmes character, very confussing story line and certainly violent in places, I didn't really enjoy it myself but my Husband wasn't going to let it beat him so he watched it again and found he understood it better the second time around, so I guess it appeals more to a male audience, not light family entertainment and you certainly have to listen well to the dialogue.

Good movie but it strayed too far from the Sherlock Holmes character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Hard to follow until everything is revealed in the last five minuets.
