Jimmy Stewart, timeless, very very good movie to watch, excellant acting throughout, We would recommend this to anyone who wants to see a movie as true to life as it would have been through the civil war.

I like this movie, a lot of home spun philosophy as well as an interesting movie, that relies on good acting rather than specila effects.

This is my favorite movie of all time. The ensemble cast works so well, and James Stewart holds them all together playing Charlie Anderson. This is truly a story that you can enjoy with the whole family, and it doesn't shy away from some of the horrible truths about war. Watch for the scene when the very young confederate solder shoots one of the sons, and I can guarantee you'll cry!

I have loved this movie for many years and still cry when I watch it. The strength of Jimmy Stewart, his toughness and his softness are beautiful to watch. Overall his love for his family is wonderful.

An old western around the Civil War Time. I have seen it before and could remember enjoying it so saw it again. I still enjoyed it though it was a somewhat dated movie and effects wise. The fight scene was quite funny though I am not sure it was supposed to be as funny as it appeared. This is really where it was dated in the way the fight was done. Still a good movie and at time quite sad.

This movie tells a great story beautifully and raises important issues without graphic violence, so common in many movies today. This is a great film.

Directed by Andrew V. Mclaglen the son of the old screen actor Victor Mclaglen, this is a film which shows you that sometimes no matter how hard you try to remain neutral, you cannot. Jimmy Stewart plays an excellent role as the father of a family of Quakers. Stewart is adament he will not take sides in the Civil War until his youngest son is taken prisoner. From then on you are taken a journey of that highlights the war and the struggles of families in it.
