Strong violence

Director: Benny Chan
Actors: Andy Lau, Jackie Chan, Nicholas Tse, Bingbing Fan

China is plunged into strife as feuding warlords try to expand their power by warring over neighbouring lands. Fuelled by his success on the battlefield, young and arrogant Hao Jie (Andy Lau) sneers at Shaolin's masters when he beats one of them in a duel. When his family is wiped out by a rival warlord, Hao is forced to take refuge with the monks. As the civil unrest spreads and the people suffer, Hao and the Shaolin masters are forced to take a fiery stand against the evil warlords and they launch a daring plan of rescue and escape. Not since the legendary kung fu film Shaolin Temple stormed the world in the 1970s has a movie been given permission to film in the actual Shaolin Temple. This honour has been bestowed on this lavish modern production starring Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs, House of Flying Daggers), Jackie Chan (Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon) and Nicholas Tse. Shaolin is one of Asia's most eagerly anticipated film events.

Good movie. Subtitled. Warlords have feuds and ongoing wars to take over the land. The shaolin temple becomes sanctuary for the people who have no food and are starving. The warlord Hou seeks sanctuary after his wrong doings lead to the death of his daughter and wife, and he realises he needs to repent and release his angry heart into a peaceful life with the buddha monks and assists in taking back the land.

Can't say I got into this one because I didn't sympathize with the characters much. Hard for me to find a good guy in this one.

I wasn't expecting much just by looking at the title or DVD cover, or even cast list. But it definitely delivered! I rally admire the soundtrack! The music was beautiful and matched the atmosphere perfectly. The fight scenes are smooth and the scenery is absolutely beautiful - from the mountains to the majestic Shaolin temple! What impressed me more was the meaning it had to it, do not want to spoil it so I'll stop here... Its not your average king fu movie with only punches and kicks, it's much deeper! I'd definitely recommend this movie!

Not what I was expecting, and I mean that in a good way. Really enjoyed this. Had a very "The Mission" like plot basis - i.e. repentance and sacrifice. Andy Lau was just brilliant - thoroughly convincing as both a ruthless warlord and as a repentant monk. The kung fu sequences where very well choreographed, but weren't over done and more added flavour and depth to the film, rather than dominating it. Cinematography was brilliant. This movie stands apart from its contemporaries for its sophisticated plot, three dimensional characters but binding it all together in a visually enticing experience. Also loved the support role of Jackie Chan. Great stuff!

Loved the martial arts, but wish they had slowed down fight sequences so we could see it better. Loved the young Shaolin warriors - and loved the comedy amongst the action. Very entertaining.

Lacks story or plot. Amateurish attempt at putting together canned plot of general kung-fu movie and trying to make it sound profound. Seen quite a few kung-fu movies in my life of 40 years. All i can say is... don't waste your time on this one. Rented it looking at for Jakie Chan's name in the cast.

Shaolin is a kung-fu movie with a difference. In addition to the brilliant action scenes, it is a thoughtful film utilising Buddhist philosophy to juxtapose the greed and lust that lurks behind the quest for power. Jackie Chan is brilliant in his comic role as the Shaolin cook.

not very good movie full of pointless violence, exageratted acting and cartoonish characters. Tries repeately to tug on your feelings with the reverse effect. The portrayal of evil is ridiculous. Some good scenes but do not amount to much at the end

Shaolin is a movie that showcases more than the expected martial arts scenes. The costume and scenery appear authentic and captivating. The storyline is intriguing with love and forgiveness overcoming greed and revenge. The viewer is taken on a personal journey of self development , with the central character losing family, wealth and status , which are exchanged for peace and inner wellbeing. A must see....

Regular martial-art movie based on Shaolin temple genre. Not much new stuff and the theme has been covered to death by so many similar movies in the past.
