Much has been made of Michael Fassbender's nude performance in Steve McQueen's Shame, as if he were the first gent to drop trou on screen. In reality, actors as diverse as Viggo Mortensen, Jason Segel, Peter Sarsgaard, Kevin Bacon, and Harvey Keitel have all unleashed their manhood upon audiences, to varying degrees of acclaim. What seems to separate Fassbender from the others is the ease with which his last name can be manipulated to accommodate a penis pun (although Bacon is surely runner up). As a result, more has been written about the Irish actor's junk than any other cinematic schlong in recent memory, outdoing even Dr. Manhattan's giant blue one from Watchmen.

Such penile-focused discourse suggests the film in which it is showcased isn't exactly up to snuff, but that absolutely isn't the case. Though many about to watch Shame will be tingling in anticipation to witness the Fassmember in action, most will sit through the end credits in awe of Michael's subtle, heart-breaking performance, as well as McQueen's assured, engrossing and hypnotic direction. Even those who don't like the film will likely still feel awed (for reasons already mentioned far too many times in these two paragraphs alone).

Fassbender stars as Brandon, a high-functioning sex addict with no real interest in reality. Think Patrick Bateman without the murderous streak. His nondescript New York office job - one where he is supposedly rather important - is just a distraction from his ongoing quest for relief and release. Mornings, afternoons, and evenings are punctuated with self-gratifying visits to the restroom, online flirtations, random hook-ups with strangers, and plotted hook-ups with prostitutes. In an early sequence, he sexually devastates a married woman on the subway by intently training his piercing eyes on her for the entire trip. Brandon has no trouble finding suitable partners, but then, his definition of a 'suitable' partner is revealed to be fairly loose as the picture progresses.

His calculated yet tenuously-balanced world spins off its axis when two women enter his life. The first is his sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan), a talented lounge singer recovering from a bad break-up, who unexpectedly drops in on Brandon looking for a place to sleep. The second is Marianne (Nicole Beharie), a co-worker who is clearly interested in a romantic relationship, but might prove to be a more complex, delicate, and emotionally perceptive bed-mate than Brandon is used to. As his life becomes more and more complicated - and the boundaries between he and his sister become more and more blurred - his persistent sexual desires grow to a defeaning roar, and he begins to seek satisfaction in an increasingly desperate fashion.

In the same way that Shame isn't merely a vehicle for Fassbender's genitals, McQueen's film isn't just about sexual addiction (but it's surely the best one on the subject, at least until The Barney Stinson Story arrives). Its power lay in that which is left unsaid. Shame, above all, concerns the horrible, unspoken history shared between Brandon and Sissy, who abandoned their home as teenagers and cannot bear to even discuss the life-ruining events that unfolded there. Did Brandon's appetite first emerge when he was a youth (and did he cruelly experiment upon his sister?), or is it the result of some terrible childhood abuse? Perhaps his needs aren't of a pleasurable nature, but merely to obfuscate the poisonous memories in his head. Screenwriter Abi Morgan astutely leaves a great deal to our imagination, and allows the uncompromising and illuminating performers Fassbender and Mulligan to fill in the requisite blanks with their sibling ribaldry. Raves for Fassbender have been unanimous, but Mulligan deserves equal praise for confronting us with a side to her we've never seen; her frenzied, half-comic energy, her willingness to be naked around her brother, and an interminably long and deeply unsettling rendition of New York, New York all contribute to the mystery of their past.

Visual artist McQueen has no interest in gimmicky behind the camera; he has tricks up his sleeve, but each is employed to great effect. He even recalls his centrepiece from Hunger (also starring Fassbender) by once again featuring the actor in conversation - this time with Marianne - in a low-key but revelatory single take. The film's intensely graphic climax - pun intended - borders on the histrionic, but it's executed hauntingly (with an assist from composer Harry Escott). It may be hard to sympathise with the plight of a man as well endowed and frequently bed-bound as Brandon, but Shame's success rests on its ability to rise above the controversial talking points and be a thoughtful character drama about the lengths people go to dull pain. That being said, yes, 'lengths' is indeed another intended pun.

4/5

Great acting no doubt, but still a dreadful movie. Even if people like that existed, why should we care about their self inflicted miseries?

A very serious character study - if you're interested in an analysis of destructive behaviour (I wasn't).

We found that in spite of very tight acting, the trouble was that at its core this film has a character who is very difficult to like. This film is a good portrayal of the lives of many people whose childhood was taken from them by one form of abuse or another, and including the sister and her dramas in the film filled that out well. But the fact that there is a good reason for his behaviour does not make me like the character. And in that sense, unfortunately, that is also very true-to-life for people in his situation.

Another confronting drama from Steve McQueen. Like "Hunger", the film stays with the viewer well after the screening finishes. A little like American Psycho in its uncompromising portrayalof a New Yorker, successful by conventional values, but who is emotiionally absent and deeply disturbed. For the discerning viewer rather than those simply wishing to be entertained.

Firstly this movie relies heavily on soft porn so be warned. Very Slow, lacked finality in the storyline, sister character shallow and goes nowhere, main character simply does not like relationships and prefers sex with strangers. Two broken people but we don't know why, the ending just as disappointing and leave the viewer up in the air. Could have been much better with a bit more depth.

Good movie. Well directed, well photographed, the actors are really good. Just didn't catch me very much.... Anyway, it is worth watching.... Be aware that the pace is slow and a lot of things are left in the air for your own interpretation (or creation, if you like).

Michael Fassbender is fantastic in this (and every other movie I've seen him in). I wasn't sure if I'd like this movie but Wow! Fassbender plays a character who has replaced personal relationships and human connection with anonymous sex, and who works hard to maintain his emotional distance from others by maximising the time spent thinking, viewing & engaging in "uncomplicated" sex. When his troubled sister re-enters his life, his protective dis-connection with the real world starts to unravel, as does he. Superb.

I am surprised at how this movie divides viewers. I thought that this was a good film with solid acting from the leads. The direction is fine and most of the scenes fit together well. However, I found the story lacking because the background of Brandon and his sister is not really explained so I had very little emotional connection with them. Why can't Brandon have a relationship with any of the women he has sex with? Why does Sissy cut her wrists? If there was one - just one - flashback scene (possibly) explaining their "bad" past, this would have been a much better, more complete, film. The director could have cut the scene where Sissy sings "New York, New York" VERY slowly. I get that they moved from Jersey but so what? I played that scene on double speed on my DVD and it was still too long. I suspect cinema viewers used that as a toilet break. Finally, can we stop talking about sex "addiction"? Brandon has an obsession not a dependency. Two different things. Some guys just can't keep it in their pants - this is just biology. Addiction is overused in describing personal issues. Injecting smack? Yes - you have an addiction. Jerking off in the shower? No.

Please don't waste your time with this movie - it is seriously one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. Even large amounts of sex and nudity don't make it interesting.

Boring, boring boring. I can not see the point of this movie. The fact that addiction (of any sort) is degrading was obvious from the first scene. Nothing was revealed about how the characters reached this sad point in their lives. I watched the first 30 minutes waiting for something to develop, but nothing did. I then fast forwarded through the rest, stoping and watching bits where there was some dialogue, hoping in vain for something interesting to be revealed or even hinted at. This is possibly the most boring film I have ever seen, which is unusual for me. I can usually find something of value in a movie. I gave this one star in error, it should be zero.

This is a film about addiction. The leading character (Michael Fassbender) is addicted to sex but it is divorced from his emotions. His sister is also dysfunctional. However, it takes a while to realise this as nothing is ever explained. The characters' back story is barely touched upon so we don't know why they are that way. There's more sex and nudity than plot. Some of the scenes are beautifully constructed, and Carey Mulligan's rendition of "New York, New York" is spellbinding.

This is usually the sort of move I'd enjoy - bit artsy, controversial subject matter. But this film really missed the mark. Boring, slow, long winded and eventless. The only saving grace was how hot Fassbender looks, and the full frontal nude shots were also worth sitting through the film for. But if you aren't into staring at hot men's groins, then give this one a miss.

A sexaholic finds it difficult to form meaningful relationships. A strange film that presents a problem but doesn’t give the audience a clear understanding of its roots or possible solution. In the end it is rather pointless like the endless pursuit itself. Maybe that’s the message. 3.5 stars

Pros: excellent acting by both Fassbender and Mulligan; very good music apart from Mulligan's rendition of 'New York, New York'. Cons: it was difficult to empathise with either character, and without that emotional engagement and investment, it's really hard to care what happens; Mulligan's character does something shocking near the end that seems to come out of nowhere; said shocking experience supposedly acts as a catalyst for Fassbender's character to end his addiction, which seems unlikely given the nature of addiction. In summary, the film is unrealistic and disaffected.

very long duration camera shots of a rather unattractive and brooding leading man, who plays the part of an even more unattractive pervert with serious sexual disorder. A leading lady who effortlessly performed the worst version of "New York, New York" that I have ever endured. This DVD should be avoided at all costs, 1/2 a star.

I really enjoyed Steve McQueen's last movie (Hunger), but this one (Shame) was really not very good. It should have been called "Michael Fassbender Waves His Massive Schlong Around" because that's basically all the movie was about.

The music was great (Bach, etc.) Not an easy movie; reminds me of "Intimacy", similar subject matter, but emotionally even colder .... At one point in the movie I started to believe that incest is the main subject matter of this movie. Later on it appeared that not; the movie is mostly about a man who is seemingly devoid of warm or romantic human emotions. He is into mechanical sex without commitments. Not a nice man, but I suppose there are millions of men like him on this planet. At least he has a job of some sort and an apartment, so can be seen as a responsible man, unlike his wayward sister...Not easy to rank this movie; not heart-warming/uplifting sort of story, and not a story at all, rather a character study...I give it 3 stars (mid rank) only because I am not sure how many stars I "should " give it; but music was nice, at least!

This is a fine film that will not appeal to all. Although it is a film about the shame of a sexual addict it is in no way a sexy film but a intense confrontational film that at times can be quiet disturbing and repelling. The performances are worth watching, with fine cinematography and film score. Similar films to Last Tango In Paris or Sleeping Beauty. I would have given it 3 stars but I had to compensate for the unnecessary bad ratings that it received below.

Couldn't really follow the point or purpose of this movie. Very sadly lacking in a back ground story - which I think would have improved it somewhat. Requires alot of your own interpretation as to why they do what they do (ie all the sex). My husband summed it up nicely I think "interesting but weird" - if you like something a bit more arty this is your film - give it a miss otherwise.

Incredible film. One of the best I've seen in the last couple of years. This movie is worth watching simply because of Fassbender's performance. I think the fact he wasn't nominated for an Oscar was an absolute travesty. The craft of the film is incredible in it's own right and is definitely worth a mention. The cinematography is beautiful and there are several shots that are stunning in their complexity. The one that stands out to me is a lengthy, panning shot of Fassbender running for several blocks without any sort of compromise in the speed. This is definitely not for everyone. There are many sex scenes that are quite graphic and shocking, as others have mentioned. It is also a character study more than a traditional narrative. There are also a lot of arty elements to the film that the director, Steve McQueen, has brought from his time as a video artist. However, if that sort of thing is your bag or you enjoy that highly focused investigation into a character then I can't recommend this movie enough.

This movie is one of those slow paced ones, the direction lacks heaps and relies way to much on the cinematography to tell the story, which it does not. It has a few glimpses of great acting, but that's about it. I could not recommend this to anybody but David from "The Movie Show" LOL

Man has sexual fantasies sitting on the train or walking around town. So what? Meanwhile his real-life relationships go nowhere and he fights with his sister for reasons that are never explained. In short, there's not much of a story. The cover blurb makes it sound all very profound and deep and meaningful. If only.

An intense and bleak character study of a complex brother and sister relationship filled with characters who seem to prefer ennui to Vegemite on their toast every morning . This movie made me think of the insight such movies like Philladelphia (Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington) had on creating awareness of our human bias and discrimination. Fassbender and Mulligan's performances are breathtakingly raw and honest. Peripheral characters also highlight the void of existing in life. Cudos to Steve McQueen for his honest and raw production. Such shame (pardon the pun) it will not get the acknowledgement it deserves in the mainstream media - oscars etc - not a pretty subject, nor one that has a simple and good ending.

Wow. And no, that isn't for the sex or nakedness. It's just..... These two very broken people trying to live a life but scarred by whatever happened to them in their past. A past that we don't see (thank goodness), but not hard to guess at what it may have been. Performances are outstanding with such delicate, sensitive and in some ways sad material/characters. Carey Mulligan's rendition of New York New York was quite spellbinding, particularly as I could also hear Frank Sinatra in my head as I listened and watched her.
