Enjoyable. Light and entertaining and the costumes were superb.
Love this movie! Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth's performances are brilliant, so too Judi Dench and Geoffrey Rush. I'm sure I'll watch again.
A play within a play as the actors portray actors in Elizabethan London. What happens behind the scenes parallels what happens on the stage as Shakespeare only barely keeps up with writing scenes before they need to be rehearsed. Shakespeare and his lover parallel Romeo and Juliettte. Authentic costuming and sets as the manners of the day conspire against the lovers. There is competition between theatres; competition between playwrites (Shakespeare & Marlowe); and competition between actors. There is an star-studded cast and the dialogue excels - it sounds like it has been lifted from Shakespeare's plays. The movie confuses itself a bit as it jumps from comedy to drama to romance and back again, but worth seeing.
Raw life as we would expect it to have been 200 years ago. Entertaining in an adult sort of way.
Wonderful characters and portrayal of these. Humour and romance combined to create a really enjoyable movie.
A lovely movie, again chick flick.
This film emersed me into 16th century London with its primitive surroundings and how people lived by the seats of their pants. Shakespeare is the aspiring poet trying to make his mark. He falls in love with a rich and beautiful girl who joins him in his new play Romeo and Juliette. The implications are dire for her. Maginificent acting - a must see!!
While not a big Shakespeare fan, I enjoyed watching "Shakespeare in Love" when it first came out and watching the dvd recently. Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes were very well cast, you could tell there was an attraction between the characters. I also enjoyed Gwyneth's portrail of a guy. Joseph is a bit of a spunk, certainly had me droolling!!
A most enjoyable movie. Great atention to detail in sets, scenery costumesetc: Fine acting form all the charaacters. I'd see it again.
Thoroughly entertaining and at times very amusing look at 15th Century England through the eyes of a young Shakespeare
My husband missed this one at the movies and wasn't sure about watching this DVD. It took five minutes and he was hooked - Geoffrey Rush was brilliant - everyone was! And we just loved Judi Dench as Elizabeth. Wonderful!
Forbidden love at it's best ;)
A great movie with lots of fun performances, sepecially from Geoffery Rush. Joseph Fiennes was great & I even quite liked Gwynneth Paltrow, though her performance was not worthy of her Oscar, & not so good as to have beaten Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth. But good to see how the themes of Shakespeare's plays were written into the script as part of the story, sepecially the nurse (a la Romeo & Juliet). And of course the incomparable Judy Dench as Queen Elizabeth 1 was a hoot! The settings & costumes were simply fabulous.
Loved it - the prose excellent
I love this movie, it's the type you can watch over and over and still feel good.
Good acting but story a little disjointed. Still worth watching.
somewhat disappointed.
too much lying on top of each other and really not much action
seven Oscars ???
Great movie - perhaps a bit of a chick flick so grab some choccie and a cup of tea and enjoy.
Wonderful movie I enjoy more each time I see it. Sparkling, very humorous dialogue and terrific acting from all the cast. The costumes and setting are very authentic for that era, with absolutely beautiful dresses for Queen Elizabeth.
