With smouldering sensuality and biting humour, the surprising relationship between the three title subjects is revealed in Steven Soderbergh's Palme D'Or-winning debut sex, lies, and videotape. James Spader won the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his brilliantly understated and seductive performance as Graham, a long-lost college friend who drifts back into town and into the lives of John (Peter Gallagher), a self-involved philanderer, his angelic wife, Ann (Andie MacDowell), and her saucy sister, Cynthia (Laura San Giacomo). This movie shows the difference between gentle love and vigorous sex, the one that is like a drug.

A nice subtle movie about infidelity and all its consequences, and what sex and love are about in their different ways.

It has subtitles for the hard of hearing.

An enjoyable, albeit dated, character piece.

This was a very powerful film, demonstrating how repressing your natural animal instincts can ruin your life. It made me feel sad and it was also tellingly disturbing how warped the American psyche is when it comes to sex, love and desire.

I liked it. It would have been very progressive back when it was made. Great acting.

Smooth & hypnotic flick. Tame by today's standards, but a treat for fans of the excellent cast!

A very good EROTIC type of " Sex " movie, the type that makes you think about it instead of graphically showing you everything. Very stimulating, interesting, a bit Artish; good if you like this sort of thing.

Strong character drama but after all these years I am really wondering what the fuss was all about?? It put Soderbergh on the map as an efficient filmmaker, delivering a solid performance piece at a low cost. But winning the Cannes Film Festival? Come on... Watch it to see a youthful Peter Gallagher, a gorgeous Andie MacDowell and a great James Spader.
