The pursuit of sappyness
by Simon Miraudo, 5/01/2009 10:07:00 AM

I’ve never seen such a bad film so well made. Seven Pounds tries to trick you into thinking you just saw a powerful work of art. It wants you to weep, and grab onto someone you love, and exclaim outside the cinema how “it’s the best movie since Crash!” I've got to admit, for a moment, it almost had me. But Seven Pounds doesn’t deserve the affection it so badly craves. It’s manipulative, tedious, patronising and shallow, but director Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness) knows how to make it look pretty. Italian charm aside, that’s not enough. Will Smith stars as Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a pet jellyfish (a plot point that is, sadly, quite significant). Ben has a very mysterious mission that is so mysterious he wouldn’t dare share his mysterious mystery with anyone. Mysterious, h...

Mysterious, huh? Muccino must imagine his audience turning to each other throughout the film and asking “Oh my, what could this guy possibly be planning?” The problem is, however, this ‘mysterious plan’ is so glaringly obvious, that even Woody Harrellson’s blind piano player can see right through it.

Oh sorry. Had I not already mentioned that Harrelson was in this film? I guess I’m no better than the screenplay; randomly introducing elements whenever it serves the plot, and sometimes not even then. The problem with Seven Pounds is that it hinges completely on a last minute reveal that is neither unexpected nor interesting. Other films have survived unspectacular dénouement’s, but Seven Pounds has nothing BUT conclusion. Ben Thomas has a clear mission in mind, and he won’t be swayed.

Smith is working hard. Too hard in fact. His character is drowning in guilt and Smith wants you to know it. He’s so determined for us to see Ben as a pious martyr, that he may as well have climbed onto the cross himself and shouted for someone to pass him the nails and hammer. Thank God Smith is as likable as he is, or Ben Thomas could have been one of the most awful, self-righteous characters in film history. In fact, if he and Rosario Dawson didn’t have any chemistry the film would have almost nothing going for it.

Oh right, Rosario Dawson is in this too. Surprise! I suppose I better get back to the story in case I give away too much too early! Harrelson stars as Ezra, a blind call center operator by day and a blind piano player by night (because all Blind People play the piano in these films). Ben calls Ezra at work and begins to mock his disability, for no apparent reason. Or maybe that’s part of the mystery. Later on Ben visits a woman called Emily (Dawson) who hasn’t been paying her hospital bills. She has a weak heart. Of course, he falls in love with her.

On and on and on it goes. There are flashbacks to another time in Ben’s life, when he had a better job and a wife. In the present, he visits various needy people and evaluates whether or not they are naughty or nice, like some sort of creepy Santa. On and on until its inevitable, inexplicable end. And it is an inexplicable end. The entire final 20 minutes is committee-approved schmaltz, including all the elements required to bring its audience to tears, such as children singing, suicide, surgery and a jellyfish. I told you the jellyfish would be important. Seven Pounds commits the two greatest sins in cinema: 1) it talks down to its audience and 2) it’s boring as hell. Ben Thomas is atoning for something – could it be for the film itself?

1.5/5

Good movie. Will Smith is always watchable. The idea of planning your death and choosing who benefits from it isn't such a bad idea.

Great Movie. Slow to get going but stick with it. It starts to make sense as the movie progresses. Clever plot. Great acting and great script. All actors under-play their roles very well. A very good, enjoyable, quality movie.

Too many incoherent flashbacks in the beginning. It ended up an ok movie but some terrible cliches in the script. Will Smith was fantastic in Hitch and Men in Black and should stick to those types of movies. I admit to grabbing for the tissues at the end.

A great film that keeps you engrossed right to the end. It takes time to work out what is going on but once you have done that it's completely enthralling. Will Smith plays a guy who has caused a car crash in which 7 people died including his wife. The film then follows Will Smith as he finds 7 people suitable for him to make a difference in their life. You won't guess the ending till you're nearly there!

Gets a bit heavy-going and hard to watch towards the end, but if you go into it not knowing much about Will Smith's character's secret, then an enjoyable mystery, romance and drama await. Smith has never been as good as this, and Rosario Dawson gives strong support. Likeable characters.

Too 'Will Smith formula' for me. It felt like he was hogging yet another movie and building his reputation as the heroic I'm-so-good solo act. Irritating. Perhaps if so many of his other movies had not been almost exclusively about his character I might have enjoyed Seven Pounds more. Or perhaps I would have enjoyed Seven Pounds with another actor all together. ( Loved him to bits in Men in Black ) Just too much Will Smith for me and not enough of everyone else.

Although one of the saddest films I've seen, this was beautiful to watch. Will Smith sure knows how to do pathos!! The story has stayed with me for hours. I watched it again 3 hours after the first viewing, and found the Special Features a real bonus; hearing from the director, with his passion and definite view on how he wanted the actors to be understated in conveying words, asking them to rely more on their emotion. It worked. I loved the way the story unfolded, with the explanation for events evolving slowly. A great film

Well crafted, just enough pace to keep you watching without overwhelming. I sort of guessed the plan, but it just made it more interesting to follow the clues. Not a light and fluffy film, and you'd probably need to be in the right mood to watch it, but well worth sticking it out.

This is a little gem of a movie about unconditional love. It has a quality cast, well directed, real characters, and great photography. The movie takes time to develop involves flashbacks, Smiths character & the build up are deliberately confusing, so be patient. A unique storyline???.. what does a good man profoundly SAD and after seeking redemption then decides he does not want to live anymore ??? but inadvertently starts to fall in love over again? Will Smith, charming as ever has a great chemistry with the impressive Rosario Dawson. Highly recommended so much so we watched it again the next morning and enjoyed it even more.

I was keen to watch this movie because of the "twist" - unfortunately I guessed the twist within 15 minutes and then had to sit through the movie. Much has been made of the twist, but I thought it was far too obvious. And without the "surprise" the movie is ordinary. Not to mention the questionable ethics.

I don't know if the failure to disclose the reasons behind Will Smith's decisions makes it any harder or easier to watch, becuase no matter what, his choice and sacrifice at the end will move you. It is ultimately a story of guilt and an attempt and redemption, and in doing so, Will changes the lives of many people. A great story.

I saw this at the cinema with no idea what it was about. It starts off as being quite confusing - lots of flashbacks and unconnected situations, until you start to put the pieces together like a jigsaw. The ending is heartbreakingly tragic, I wanted to sob but had to make do with tears running down my face, as did my friends. Overall a good movie - interesting (if slightly implausible) story, the delightful Rosario Dawson (romantics will love this movie), however I did find Will Smith a little irritating at times, he was so agonisingly agonised, I just wanted to slap him. The ending, whilst heartbreaking, was just a bit hard to believe. Not a movie to watch if you're feeling blue - you'll feel worse afterwards!

Dull, dull, dull. And the stars are for the IDEA of the film and Will Smith's fine self. Way too long...and trying too hard to be intelligent and moral when the end is obvous and without reason. At some stages I thought I'd dozed off but I now realise either the director and/or editor had. Jumps around. Characters have no motivation. A bit stupid, really. Not the worst film but not everything it could have been.

I saw it coming quite early in the movie. The end is indeed excellent and Will Smith is as his best HOWEVER it's 2 hours long and it was hard to watch so slow it was at times. Too much time is wasted trying to confuse us and the beginning looks more like a jigsaw puzzle. In the same vein of Pursuit Of Happyness, 7 pounds was for me too much. I was bored. A pity when you've got a great idea like this one.
