Separate Lies is a particularly effective movie, perhaps at least in part because the writer and the director were the same person. The acting is especially good and convincing, at least for the major players, and the photography is equally good. The tension lies in the fact that the police are intentionally kept in the dark as to who was driving a car which hit a pedestrian. The resolution of the problem comes when the person the police suspect and would like to charge as the guilty driver dies of cancer, which presumably closes the case for the police. However the main theme of the movie is not the plot but the portrayal of those who are successfully attempting to disrupt the investigation through disinformation. The five stars I give to this movie are for the artistic quality, rather than the plot. It is a beautifully made film.

Interesting movie. He must be the most forgiving husband ever! I was hoping for a twist in the end but it was still an enjoyable movie to watch.

A hit-and-run in the first minute sets the scene in this excellent drama which has been adapted from Nigel Balchin's novel from the 1950s. Julian Fellowes, who wrote the screenplay for Gosford Park and here is both writer and director, has very successfully brought the action forward to the present day.

Annoying film, in the end, I had no sympathy for any of the characters. Desparately needed a decent twist at the end

Oh so bloody British, stiff upper lip, pull together, let's not make waves - if I were James I'd had dropped her right in it - sold her right down the river. But nothing happened - and I mean nothing. It was a bit vacuous... but, strangely... well observed

A movie that "lolst its way" in my opinion. Didn't know what it wanted to be, a drama or a detective story.

This isn't a thriller, it's a contemporary, upper middle class English country house drama - and as such a very good one. Well scripted and acted with great characterisations, I'd highly recommend this film as a psychological drama - just don't pick it if you are wanting a heartpounding thriller.

Good screenplay and gripping story, alternating between police investigation and personal drama. The three leads are on the top of their game, particularly Tom Wilkinson.

If you like British movies with pretty scenery, a few pychological twists and good acting then this movie is for you. Written and directed by "Kilwillie" from "Monarch of the Glen". Definitely worth watching.

Excellent acting and wonderful scenery. We really enjoyed this film apart from the ending which was rather disappointing. The sort of film that the Brits are really good at.

Interesting movie, good acting by all, beautiful shots of the English countryside. The type of character studies the English do so well. Kept me interested right to the end.

This is a taut and suspenseful who dunnit. Good performances from all the cast especially Emily Watson and will appeal to anyone who enjoys good English cinema. Not at all predictable and a film with a physcological edge that will keep viewers guessing till the closing credits.

Somehow quaint, the premise of human fraility and perhaps growth is well done.

Thought this movie was great. Kept my interest all the way thru. Good acting by Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson - 2 of my favorite actors/resses. Thought Rupert Everett was out of his league. Also, what on earth has he been having done at the plastic surgeons? - not a good look. Apart from that a really enjoyable movie! Recommend

Crikey talk about stiff upper lip and all that!! Not sure about this one. For me it had its moments however I would not watch it again. The British are well known for "turning the other cheek" and this movie was certainly no exception in portraying this. Enjoyed the performance by Tom Wilkinson, however the other actors left me a bit cold - perhaps a bit of old British attitude brushed off on me.
