Director: Asif Kapadia
Actor: Ayrton Senna

Spanning Senna’s years as a Formula One racing driver from 1984 to his untimely death a decade later, SENNA explores the life and work of the triple world champion, his physical and spiritual achievements on the track, his quest for perfection and the mythical status he has since attained. Directed by Asif Kapadia (The Warrior, Far North), the film is written by Manish Pandey and produced by James Gay-Rees (Long Time Dead, Blackball), Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner with Kevin Macdonald (Touching The Void, The Last King of Scotland, State of Play), Manish Pandey, Debra Hayward and Liza Chasin serving as Executive Producers. The film is made with the full co-operation of the family of Ayrton Senna, who have given permission for this to be the first documentary feature film about his life; Formula One Management, who have provided footage not previously seen theatrically; and the Ayrton Senna Institute, the charitable foundation established after his death which provides educational opportunities to millions of deprived Brazilian children

Asif Kapadia’s documentary on the life and early death of F1 racer Ayrton Senna – a man and sport, I admit, I knew nothing about before attending the screening – is a stirring and spectacular achievement. As an engaging film, it finds the human drama and narrative drive (pun!) in his rivalry with fellow racer Alain Prost. As a car movie, it leaves Fast Five (et al) in the dust; the helmet-cam sequences of three-time world champion Senna expertly navigating the track are electrifying, and more befitting of 3-D conversion than anything in Transformers. As a document of a man’s life, it’s deeply affecting. Kapadia stands back; he compiles enough archive footage of the legend, the supporting characters in his life, and the major events of his career, to almost make it seem as if this is the world’s greatest and most believable re-enactment. As a document of life in general, it’s freakishly astute. We don’t learn much about Senna as a young man, his private life, or why he even got into racing. But we understand who he is, and believe him when he says he needs to race, and that quitting is never an option.

Senna isn’t just about Senna; it’s about what drives (yes, yes, pun again intended) us to do the things we do, sometimes beyond all reason. Although Ayrton’s fatal crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix is never mentioned or alluded to prior to its occurrence in the film, the spectre of death looms large over proceedings. Even Senna seems to recognise that his fate is written in the stars as he approaches his doomed race. Kapadia neither tries to brighten the mood with a cheap finale, or attempt to jerk tears with overwrought melodrama (I still succumbed). Although that ominous sense of dread is ever present, it’s overshadowed by the voracious central character at the film’s core. His is a compelling and human story, albeit a tragic one. There’s no need for it to be sugar-coated for it to remain inspiring.

4.5/5

Excellent documentary. I detest F1 racing but found this documentary to be excellent in it's presentation of the human story behind the scenes. Remarkable compilation of onfile footage and an amazing insight into Senna. Highly recommended.

Was recommended this doco by a friend in Canada who had said 'even if you are not into racing, it's just a great documentary' - and it honestly is. Even got a little teary towards the end of Senna's story. Loved the old footage and interviews and to hear this rare story of one of the sports greats. Wonderful to see the positive effect he had on his home country, the hope he gave his own people and the legacy through charity that has been left behind. Thoroughly enjoyable.

The DVD version of the movie I received only had the directors/writers/producers voice-overs and it was as boring as could be. Awful. There should be mention that this isn't the actual original movie with true content, as shown at the movies.

This was fantastic. I chose this as I'd seen him mentioned in places but had no idea who he was....know I now. Totally engrossing and full of detail and emotion, this doco gave me ALL OF THE FEELINGS. Knowing the end result going in didn't change how devastating and bereft I felt; the interviews, racing and home videos really showed you who he was, and who the world was missing at the end.

I loved this so much - a rare man indeed who died far too young - the film was handled with so much passion and sensitivity - by the end I felt I knew the man and his passions - very exciting too to be in the car with him going so fast - first class movie that everyone should see!

Enthralling all the way through. Great to get an insight into the fairly closed / unknown world of F1 drivers.

Not for those that are not fans; I agree with the review by Roger Ebert (available on the Internet) who gave this movie only 2 and a half stars.

As a F1 fan, fantastic, well done. Sadly I can remember the race with heart stopping breath to see if Ayrton made it through the accident. Unfortunately they missed something in the end, they talked about Prost and Ayrton through out the doco and their dislike for each other but they obviously made up at some stage as he is a now a trustee for the fund - maybe I just missed it..

I love documentaries and thought this was excellent as I am a real Formula One fan. I didnt know the story of Ayrton Senna and thought it was very interesting, especially as it was really the start of politics in the sport. Ayrton Senna paved the way for improvement in the safety of drivers.

Senna is presented as a kind of documentary. He was a brilliant race car driver, dead suddenly at the age of only 34. Martial arts had Bruce Lee, formula one had Ayrton Senna.

They obviously had a look of footage of Senna, I assume because he was so high profile. That said, it would have been good to get more real depth in the Prost - Senna relationship and the Senna - F1 management relationship. The culpability of Williams is only strongly suggested by omg that look responsible for his death. Public sport and spiritual experiences dont mix in my opinion. Still, yes was a good story.

Just a pleasure to watch this movie was a fan of Senna's driving and had a quick meeting in Adelaide sure a really well done flim. This got to the real man behind the exterior and will be purchasing my own copy. He was deemed to be the best ever and he was such a competitor. Would recommend this to all racing fans.

The insight into Prost's and Senna's feud was rivetting. And the footage of the pre-race politics allows the audience to experience the persuasions of the Formula One.

Senna, what a passionate man, about his family, career and his religion. I am a Formula one fan and a fan of Senna's ability. If you are, watch this movie/documentary. It had my attention from start to finish, I could not stop watching. The musical score to accompany the scenes was brilliant. The epic battles with Alain Prost were incredibly detailed. Sadly we lost a talent well before his years. This is not just about Formula one. WATCH IT!!1

This is an awesome documentary, I have never had any interest in formula one, but this film is about Senna the man and the legacy he left for the sport. He was such a beautiful, humble man who was always fighting for the safety of the drives and trying to keep the sport pure and unpolluted by the politics of big money. It also gives an insight into Brazil of that era, and i can understand why every Brazilian alive in that era knows and loves Senna. He held the hopes and dreams for the future.

I am not in to car racing and I was only 13 when the accident happened, so I don't know much about Senna, apart from hearing the name a few times. This documentary portrays a kind young man, full of promise, who died tragically before he reached his full potential. Very sad.
