Strong horror violence

Director: Kim Ji-Hun

On an isolated oil rig platform, Hae-jun works as the equipment manager for a small, but dedicated crew. The region of sea, called Sector 7, represents their last hope of finding oil. After an undersea expedition goes horribly wrong, other crew members begin to turn up dead; one by one, their bodies viciously multilated.

What the few survivors soon discover is a transparent underwater creature they had encountered once before. The viral monster infiltrated the ship through the drilling pipe and has been feeding on the crew to survive. Hae-jun and her colleagues’ frantic fight for survival begins.

Starts off light hearted and almost comedy but when the creature appears its a real rollar coaster ride of horror, action and thrills. And for once a logical explanation for the monster since Alien

Riding on the back of the success of "The Host" (a superb monster flick), this movie ticks most of the boxes... but throws in some weirdos for flavour (overacting much?). And that's where it fails -- the attemps at slapstick humour and screaming dialogue detract from the overall tone, and make you wish the monster would hurry up and eat them all. The CGI is world-class, but the acting and character development is bizarre (even for an Asian movie), and quite often annoying. Watch it for the monster, not the people.

Despite a weak beginning (cliche and some bad acting) and looking fake visual fx, it gets heaps better once the monster is released (wait about 30 minutes) and it is surely the best creature flick I have seen for a very long time, the last one was THE HOST also from Korea. The creature is really impressing and the plot is also quite original. 4 stars because such movies are rare.
