This really is a beautiful and moving story. It is quite extraordinary to have been based on the actual secret diaries of Anne Lister, which were decoded (she wrote them in her own unique 'code' to protect her privacy in a world not yet ready for same-sex relationships) 150 years after they were written! This movie is captivating, moving, at times heartbreaking, and ultimately a heartwarming tribute to the extraordinary woman that Anne Lister was. The film demonstrates what a strong, courageous and authentic woman she was - a woman ahead of her time in so many ways. She wore so many hats and all with conviction, integrity and passion. She was an independent woman, a romantic, a lover, a writer, a business woman, a niece, a friend, a student, a mentor, and a woman of great passion, to name just a few of those hats. Set in the era of Jane Austen, the film is also enchanting with its period costumes, lovely locations, and wonderful use of the English language. A sincere film that speaks to the human need for love and an authentic life in all of us.
