There are many movies that are groundbreaking for unique reasons. This is one of them, it's not because of the story nor the acting. To put it simply - this movie was groundbreaking in it's depiction of military combat and in this case for the veterans of World War 2. Before this movie world war 2 was always limited to the "one shot one kill" scenario and we would see the enemy dropping in huge numbers compared to the "good guys". This movie throws out all those stereotypes and has changed the way combat is portrayed in countless movies that have come after it!!! The reason why war and combat is made so differently in cinemas these days is solely because of this film. The D-day landing is a triumph of modern cinematography and pyrotechnics blended with cgi. And the final scenes are heart wrenching and incredible. Do not miss this film!!!

As has been extensively noted the opening scene is an amazing and deeply affecting piece of cinema. However, other than setting the mood it doesn't really have anything to do with the plot. The main premise of the movie is an original idea, but after that initial scene is over this film reverts to your standard war movie. The characters are one-dimensional, the goodies can run through a hail of bullets without a scratch, and the baddies only need one bullet to send them flying backwards through the air like a gymnast. I don't know what it is about Tom Hanks but I didn't find him at all convincing.

This is a moving account of what the war must have been like. The landing on the beach at the very start of the movie leaves the watcher both shaking their heads at the sacrifice of human life, and hoping and praying that something like this never happens again. It was a compelling watch, and I would recommend it to anyone who would be thinking of joining the armed forces. My brother who is ex-army claims that out of all the army movies produced in the last 15 to 20 years, this is the most accurate account. He and another ex-army buddy who served for a six month period over in Iraq, walked out of the Hurt Locker, in their eyes it was a disgraceful representation and total fiction.

This is war in its most graphical and brutal glory, the first segments of the D day landings are of the most compelling. If this is as close to realistic as possible it is so hard to believe what those soldiers went through. A must see. Excellent.

DTS Audio track in this film combined with the soldiers view of how horrific the Normandy landing supplying a fierce opening that demands your attention for the rest of the movie which is a bit of a curious plot to pull a soldier from active duty.
