Not only did this become increasingly horrible to watch, which was presumably the director's intention, but it made no sense at all. Not helped by the scenes being quite random with no sense of continuity nor coherent story. In short, an awful film. Had it had something to say in terms of story or characters, the depravity and horror depicted could have been seen in context.
Rubbish, made by a sexually deranged director. We are living in nasty times when something as depraved as Salo can be thought up, let alone filmed and released. It is torture porn, but don't mistake it for something akin to Hostel, Saw or even The Human Centipede - Salo is Torture Porn, a movie outside the horror genre despite being utterly horrific. Full of degenerate sexual perversions being acted out from start to finish - rape, defecation, urination, sodomy - it's the sort of movie most people would like to erase from their minds. Trying to find a deeper meaning in Salo is impossible. It exists only because the world's values have degraded, and disgusting people revel in degradation while wanting nothing more than to infect others with their sickness.
Salo, not for the weak-hearted. An essential film for those interested in the corruption of the human spirit by one-dimensional ideologies like fascism. When you have dictatorships this is what you can expect, eh President Assad?
I did not realise this movie was from the 70's, nor did I realise it was pornagraphic! I thought the R rating was due to the war content ie, it may have been extremely violent. Once I realised where it was going, I turned it off.
At look at how humans have structured their societies - those at the top are sadistic devils and those at the bottom literally eat poo. There is no god and no one can hear you scream. Passolini lays it all bare. Watch this film if you can stand to see the truth of your situation.
Don't really know what all the fuss was about. Some of the scenes were offensive and sick-making, but all the actors were quite obviously of age, and some of the imagery, and most of the music was quite beautiful. The plot wandered, and the ending was sudden and without climax. I guess that is what we expect from Pasolini and Italian cinema in general. There was a political point being made, but so obscurely that most viewers (like me) will miss it on a single viewing. Some lovely penises to look at.
Way past sexy...just over the top disgusting!
Honestly I'm not sure how to comment on this film. I approached it interested in discovering a film that has a highly controversial history of censorship. I can understand why the censorship in past decades as the combination of violence and various 'unusual' sexual practices would have been highly offensive to many people less desensitised than we are today. Nevertheless as a work of art the application of censorship was wrong in hindsight and trivial today.
That leaves the question, for me of the quality of the art. Firstly I'm almost convinced this is still an edited version it is so badly produced. It really is one of the worst cut and edited movies I have seen in a long time. In addition the acting is generally average and the effects poor even for the standards of 1975. It really has no artistic merit from a production point of view.
From the perspective of a narrative, I can appreciate the artistic messages admiring critics offer regarding a critique of the precipice of degradation that hides behind us all - society a thin veneer from barbarism. However I'm calling this the emperor's new clothes - the story telling is just not that good or interesting, it's a chore to watch and the message is a constant unsubtle sledgehammer bludgering.
I'm glad I watched it but I don't come away thinking I've watched anything good apart from gaining an understanding of an interesting part of our history. In that respect it could be considered excellent because perhaps that's the real value of this movie ie the living story it became as society interacted with it and was forced to ask questions of itself.
after all the reviews on this film i was interested in seeing how disturbing a film had to be before it got banned (salo was banned ages ago!) ... i was disappointed. yes it was grose and hard to watch at sometimes, but if i didnt read previous reviews and sypnosis's before watching it i would of had no idea what this film was about! awful storyline, long drawn out film - torture porn.
Not even all the "artistic merit" in the world could possibly justify the making of this film. I don't have a weak stomach and generally like watching challenging movies but this one was completely over the top. If, like me, you have some curiosity about the banning of this film, I recommend you don't let your curiosity get the better of you. Give it a wide birth...
Horrible! Don't watch it, it's sick and disturbing, and not in a good way.
A long slow film. Most uneven and unsatisfying.
If the film is an attack on fascism is open to question.
The film seems to be morethe director's warped vision.
I would not recommend anyone to see this film.
There is something unpleasant about Salo that makes you suspect the Director's stated objectives are a mask for far more deeper and troubling problems of the Director himself. There are glimpses of this in Pasolini's so-called trilogy of life. The fact that Pasolini draws you into this world by making it a voyeuristic experience (note the binoculars at the end) makes it doubly unsettling. Highly dubious but unforgettable. 3.5 stars
This was one of the most infamous banned films. When films are mentioned this movies name always comes up. So thu reputation I hired this and thou its not the powerhouse Cannibal Holocaust was it certainly isnt far behind. 9 girls and 9 boys are kidnapped during the war and are taken to a secluded mansion and are put thu 120 days of Hell. The acting is top notch by an expert Italian cast and the direction thu a tad slow bulids up the scenes very nicely. To understand this film is to understand this was made as a rant agasint the goverment at the time by the director who sadly was killed as this film was part 2 of a planned trilgoy. But thu the acts are very brutal esp. towards the end I found they choose the wrong moments to make it like a black comedy lightening the moment with humor when they should had went for the jugular. For those expecting a Hostel torture fest they will be disappointed as the best is saved for last and it def doesnt disappoint. Def NOT a film for those easily offended and it only falls short of 5 stars due to the comedy factor but nonetheless its a powerful and shocking movie that should be viewed with caution and an open mind.
Powerful and brutal, a (VERY) significant critique of the corruption of politics and power.
The production of this film probably cost the director his life.
You will probably not realise the subtlety & depth of this film if you haven't watched the supplementary disk or are familiar with its controversial history.
For those who want a real insight into the film and the director's motivation, a second viewing will be mandatory.
For those just seeking entertainment, it's unlikely that they'll finish the first viewing.
You have been warned.
