It feels more like a set-up for a more important story. Notable because Depp plays someone more normal than "kooky".

The sort of movie you might stumble into halfway through and end up sticking with because it ambles in a genial way. Or you could turn it off and not really have any nagging feelings about what happened. Johnny Depp is best when he's channeling Hunter S. Thompson (which comes and goes), whose story this is, and otherwise he's the blank slate of yore, passively registering reactions to the chaos around him. The movie takes place in Puerto Rico, Aaron Eckhart plays the smarmy counterpoint, and there's a love interest whose scenes contain all the bum notes. The picture was surprisingly directed by Bruce Robinson of Withnail and I fame, who hasn't seemed to have done much in the interim.

An Ok movie certainly not great, not bad. I little bit of nostalgic escapism not really worth the effort. More of a worthy tribute to Hunter S Thompson from an old mate.

A lot better than I expected. I was imagining it to be more 'out there' a la Burton/Depp. I actually liked seeing Johnny Depp playing a 'normal' part for a change. The film captures the excess of the era and the big business blob that swallows up everything that is good and reeks of greed. Giovani Ribisi and Richard Jenkins were their usual brilliant selves. The ending was a bit of an anti climax and took some weird and unnecessary turns. I wonder whether Depp has a 'no nudity' clause in all his contracts. Don't think I have EVER seen his butt! Ladies NOTE - he keeps his towel on during the one and only sex scene! What's up with that?

This wasn't as bad as some reviews said but I wish I'd known at the start that it was based on a true story, that would have made more sense. I must admit I'm a bit sick of watching creative people act like dead beats and drinking themselves into a stupor - it's not entertaining in real life and not in a movie either. There were some entertaining parts to this story and some very realistic situations as well. There are a few too many eccentric characters but it is watchable, the acting is very good, and the settings are too.

Johnny Depp Tim Burton = Excellent. Johnny Depp Pirates = Awesome. Johnny Depp as an everyday bloke = not so good. Anybody could have played this part. Not that interesting.

Agree with other reviewers - missed the mark for comedy & left you wondering just what it was all about. A waste of time - didn't even see it through to the end.

Misses the mark on comedy. Miss all the other marks as well. Johnny Depp is OK but not great. Unsure what it was about.

It's a movie that tries to be everything, covering all sorts of genres. And it fails, in what is mainly a lot of nonsense. Much of the time is spent drinking or recovering from drinking. Everything but writing. When the writing kicks in, it's all too late.

A movie that started out with great promise, but fizzled out towards the end. In fact, the end was a definite anti-climax.

Watched this film as I am a huge Johnny Depp fan but it missed the mark as a 'classic' Depp character it was slow and ordinary, as said previously not sure what kind of film it wanted to be, certainly not a comedy though it did have comical moments yet not a drama either, more of a biography? ? ? Gave it a extra star as it has a yummy Johnny Depp shower scene and no one can complain about that gorgeous body ! ! ! ! Worth watching but wouldn't watch it a second time or buy a copy for my Depp DVD collection, put it on par with his movie 'Public Enemies'.

Strangely old-fashioned and seemingly unsure of what genre of film it actually wants to be. Good performances all round, but Rum Diary is messy and ultimately rather unengaging.
