RocknRolla takes a dangerous ride into high crime and low life in contemporary London, where real estate has supplanted drugs as the biggest market, and criminals are its most enthusiastic entrepreneurs. With millions up for grabs, all of London's criminal underworld conspires, colludes and collides with one another in an effort to take their cut. But as high rollers and petty criminals alike jockey for dominance, the true prize of one multi-million-dollar deal will fall into the hands of a junkie rock star.

So this is Guy Ritchie’s big comeback? Huh. This is the same director we were so excited about back in 1998? Are you sure? Ten years later this kind of cockney gangster tale feels so stale. While Ritchie was busy being Madonna’s handbag, we’ve been inundated with films starring London villains wrapped up in complicated wheeling’s and dealings. Now that he’s finally broken free from Madge’s vice grip, he’s decided to go back to his stylistic, Kaballah-free roots. But time has moved on without him it seems. Despite a valiant effort, the once-groundbreaking wunderkind has slid into mediocrity. RocknRolla is far from bad – let me get that out of the way first. There are certainly a couple of sequences that make it worth it worth renting. The thing is, Ritchie seems intent to muddle things up ...

The thing is, Ritchie seems intent to muddle things up for the audience. Our narrator Archie (the menacingly likable Mark Strong) begins the film by explaining the real estate purchases of crime boss Lenny Cole (Wilkinson), and the series of events that leave a ragtag group of thieves known as The Wild Bunch indebted to him. At least, I think that’s what is explained. The opening few minutes are so rapid-fire and head-scratching by the end of it you’re not even sure who owes who.

At this point of the review, I should really be informing you of the plot. I wish I could. I really, really do. But I can honestly say I don’t know what the plot is. It’s hard enough to follow during the movie and it’s insanely difficult to recall on reflection. Even scanning the Wikipedia page is giving me a headache – I had an easier time surmising the plot of Watchmen. So here’s what you need to know:

Lenny Cole accidentally loses a painting that belongs to an ominous Russian property dealer. He needs it back for a multi-million dollar deal to go through. Cole’s estranged stepson, crack-addled rock star Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell) is suspected of stealing the painting, but is currently missing, presumed dead. Meanwhile, the Russian’s accountant (Newton) plots with Wild Bunch members One Two (Butler) and Mumbles (The Wire’s Idris Elba) to steal money from her employer. I think.

The good news is that despite the film’s incomprehensibility, it does provide a pretty good time. If you are looking to distract yourself for a couple of hours, you could do much worse than with RocknRolla. The cast are insanely watchable, particularly the affably charming Scot Gerard Butler. Tom Wilkinson has a great time, hamming it up like his life is on the line. Even cameos from Jeremy Piven and Ludacris are welcome.

The big problem here is the narrative – it’s not the wild camerawork that makes you queasy, it’s the zigzagging story. There are times when the plot is put aside to feature a great action sequences (in fact, it has one of the greatest on-screen robberies I’ve seen in a long time). But when Ritchie tries to show us how clever his movie is, he fails miserably. I suppose things could be worse – for a while there it seemed like we may have lost him forever. I’d rather watch Ritchie work his way back to the top then see him act as Madonna’s footstool.

2.5/5

Clips along a a great pace. It seems to keep getting more complicated, but the script is so well handled that you know what is happening at all times. Great characters, a bit if humour, a bit of biffo, and some great accents, what more could one want!

Disappointing follow-up to Snatch, could have been much more entertaining than it was. Some bits of the movie were downright boring. Watch only if you are hardcore gangster or Guy Ritchie fan.

Absolutely amazing. Love the East end accents as I come from London, UK. Of course I am not bias I think the movie is as great if not better than Stock, Lock & Barrel another Guy Ritchie Classic. I guess since he left Madge he has got his MOJO back. Great piece of humour and artistic talent. Loved loved loved IT I would give it 5 out 5.

Boring...don't bother. If you have seen Lock, Stock, you don't need to see this poor repeat of same idea. Richie is a one and 1/2 (Snatch) hit wonder.

Slick fast paced crime gang actioner that celebrates its own cleverness throughout. Should have the alternative title Once Upon a Time in London. 3.5 star

Not the greatest movie, i think the only good thing that Guy Ritchie has ever done was get divorced from Madonna!! This movie was a total waste of time. it is far too slow and i turned it off 45 minutes in to the movie. Would not bother watching it to be honest!!

RocknRolla is a film that resembles the style and themes of Guy Ritchie's other London crime films, Snatch. and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It isn't one of Ritchie's finest work but it does have its entertainment quality to it. If you enjoy Ritchie's crime films, this is recommended. If you haven't seen his previous crime movies, go rent those before renting this.

Not as good as Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but very much in the same genre and formula. The "twist" was a bit easy to predict, but it was still fun getting there.

A pale shadow of Lock Stock and Snatch (both of which I loved). We found this slow and tedious. Would have been better off rewatching the originals...

I watched this with the subtitles on, just in case, like Snatch, I couldn't understand a word they were saying! It turned out I didn't really need them. This film is a virtual carbon copy of his previous Lock Stock and Snatch in style and substance; just the faces change. There seems to be a preoccupation with foreigners, gays and junkies in the dialouge of this one - (Guy Ritchie wrote and directed) and the film leaves open the possibilty for a sequel.

Rates very highly in the pantheon on British gangster films - not at all comparable with other Ritchie films - so why bother - it's different.

A movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, which provides some fun and a relief from the otherwise loud, confusing and violent story.

Not a bad efforrt from Guy Richie but doesn't quite cut it when compared to Lock Stock and Snatch. Although from the same mould, most the characters don't have anywhere near the charm of brad pitt or vinnie jones in their roles. The first half of the movie is pretty slow paced, although it does gather momentum and the second half is much better. Some funny moments, scary villians and some memorable quotes/lines make this good, but far from Richies best.
