A much more realistic movie of history leading up to Robin Hood's eventual mission. It may not be only fiction, but the reality of the Crusades and the French/English wars would be a good representation of real events. A well done movie. Loved the acting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this adaption of the Robin Hood tale.Kate Blanchett in particular is a wonderful Marion and Russell Crow does a good job as Robin. The rest of the characters are excellent but I did think King John was a bit over the top.
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie, but I did. Its not the greatest depiction of the Robin Hood tale, but it does give it a new spin. Its slow to bring all the story together, but I think it depicts a medieval world a lot better than other Robin Hood movies ie. its a bit gritty and grotty. I liked Crowe and Blanchett but it took a while to get my head around them as Robin Hood and Maid Marion.
Nothing like any Robin Hood movies we have seen but we really enjoyed this one.
Ridley I was quite Let down, Never thought I could be let down by Ridley and Russel but here it is, Very Cheap, Generic and Bland, Incredibly Predictable. I feel like I’ve seen this movie before. Maybe we have to blame the Script Writers? Because Ridley Directs the same way every time and that’s what I love, Russel Is Brilliant in everything but there really wasn’t much to work with. INCREDIBLY Predictable and bland. If you have never seen this kind of story before then by all means watch it.
A good saturday afternoon at the flicks type movie ,good guys look good bad guys look bad .
Historical accuracy on a par with Clash of the Titans.
This is a great movie and not just because its stars are two Australians. Thoroughly enjoyed!
top stars and good efects and photography but just the wayrhe story was presented, it's sequence------ I wish I had used that amount of time to see something more interesting.
Always enjoy a good medieval movie
Trying to replicate the recipe Crowe/Scott from Gladiator just for the sake to cash in, here's Robin Hood with 2 hours and a half duration. A VERY long movie with not much substances in it. While I felt for the gladiator, I haven't felt much for any of the characters in RH. Perhaps Crowe doesn't have what Errol Flynn had. Flynn was quite larger than life as Robin Hood actually and getting Crowe filling those shoes had to be a failure.. We all know the legendary Robin Hood and we know that he definitely doesn't look like Crowe. Even Costner did a better job at the time. This Russel Crowe/Ridley Scott Robin Hood is far from what the story we all know and accepting this new view on that story is not easy. This Robin Hood is perhaps closer to Braveheart (without reaching the same level though) than it is of popular Robin Hood beliefs. To give you an example, in this RH movie, Robin actually fights with/ffor the king of England against a French invasion!
This is probably not his best work, but it was still very good. The challenge is probably that the story has been told so many times already, it just did not feel fresh. But if you like period pieces, you will enjoy it.
Fantastic really enjoyed it!
I'm not a Crowe fan but this was good
Dialogue rather muffled at times, in particular Russell Crowe's mumbling didn't help. Other than that not too bad a movie.
I would have given this Movie 4 stars instead of 2, but the sight of Maid Marion attacking the French Army with a goup of children riding ponies was the most ridiculous thing that I have ever seen in a Movie! And don't get me started about the French Army storming the beach in D-day style landing barges!!!!
Top mark good acting by Russell Crowe and Kate top marks.
Im a big fan of Kevin Costner and was sceptical that i would enjoy this movie ... but i thoroughly enjoyed this version of Robin Hood
Its not like anything was done badly in this movie. Its just that it didn't offer anything new, and Russell Crowes Robin Hood was kinda too stoic and unmovable. He didn't really change all that much throughout.
Oh I LOVE Russell Crowe in historical roles. This is my favourite role of his apart from Maximus in Gladiator. Cate brought much strength to the Marion role too. I really really liked this. Totally agree with other reviewers in thinking this was much better than expected.
I heard a lot of rubbish about this movie, but I like these kinds of films so I thought I'd give it a go, I'm glad I did it was well worth it, good film.
Great movie just a bit long
Did Russ seem bored during the whole movie? Horrible performance. I liked the pre- robin hood plot, but they seemed stoned or something. I liked the story, but not the acting.
I enjoyed this prequel to the saga of Robin Hood but my husband did not! He thought the movie was going to follow the traditional storyline but infact it tells how Robin Longstride became known as the outlaw Robin Hood and the events leading up to that. I enjoyed the characters, though did find it hard to see beyond Russell and Cate in the romantic scenes, rather than their characters Robin & Marion. Cate is a very feisty, courageous Marion and Russ plays Robin as a strong, stoic type, very down-to-earth. Supporting cast - Max Von Sydow,William Hurt, Mark Strong and many others, were excellent. The movie did feel overly long at times and occasionally a little cliched, but overall enjoyable.
Absolute rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A flat chested Maid Marion- I do not think so!
Interesting to see the story of Robin Hood before he became an outlaw. A few odd bits such as Marion fighting and the orphaned boys with their masks but entertaining none-the-less.
Although Russ and Cate were very good, the story was too far away from what we know and the kids of Sherwood was just plain silly. The Sheriff who I love to hate also failed to have more that a bit part and Prince john was just not evil at all. OK for a wet Sunday avo if you just don't want to do the ironing.
An interesting origin story, different from your typical Robin Hood stories. The story sadly, lacks a conclusion (changes to the story have written the common ending out)
I thought the movie was too dark and too long. Russell Crowe is a great mumbler and I did not think Cate Blanchett showed to advantage.
I think it was to clever to be funny...Kate B and Russel C did not gel.
Too serious and lacking romance.story line sucked.
When Maid Marion picks up a sword I switched off. Good acting but the script went awry. Rusty has done better.
different from the usual Robin Hoods, but great
I fell asleep - such a boring long winded movie, great for insomnia.
A lot of fun, good prequel to the old legend.
This was a wonderfully acted and researched 'period piece'. Another slant of the famous characters of Sherwood Forest. It was at the conclusion, the Robin Hood myth develops. Customing and characters were very convincing. The plot taking a very different line to the T.V. versions of this story. Really. really enjoyed this one. In fact, played it twice.
Enjoyed it...sort of. It was entertaining but wasn't rivetting. Drawn out in parts. Russell was fantastic but thought Cate was miscast and didn't feel any chemistry between the two. Still watchable.
A good movie spoiled by trying to cash in on the fame of previous versions
Lot of scenes were difficult to view as they had dark backgrounds. The content was knew to me as it was before Robin and his merry men in Sherwood Forest.
Great movie plenty of action
Enjoyed movie, cinematography was excellent
what a fantastic plot.....there is always a story behind a story....way way way back before i was a legend....ok......maybe they can think of a plot - Robin Hood as a 6 year old?
no really was good....
Nice to see the other side of Robin Hood, as to where and how it all started! Go Russell Crowe, your usuual brilliance!
Interesting take on the story - well done.
Eh, another Robin Hood movie - nothing too ground breaking here for me
The story, Robin Hood was incredibly well conceived, the acting superb as well as the many folk playing parts in this epic. The scenery displayed a true sense of the time of King Arthur , and the intensity of the planned episodes were structured for realism.
I was really disappointed with this film and didn't even watch it until the end. This is a perfect example of the trailer being far better than the actual movie. The action had no impact, the accents were bad, the characters cliche and the camera work was boring. Ridley Scott......what happened?
What a farrago. WWII-style French invasion of England. Has Russell Crowe been in anything good since LA Confidential?
The best version of the legend so far. Very satisfactory treatment by all cast and makers.
Some parts of the movie I reallyliked, but it was one part in particular that ruined it for me; Mark Strong. I find it loathesome that he is continuously typecast in one of the leading villain roles, but offers nothing new to his portrayal of these kinds of characters to stifle the boredom and tedium of watching him play them. Its like seeing the same character again and again crop up across multiple movies. Stardust, Tristan Isolde and now Robin Hood... even with the shaved head; tragic!
Terrible film such a pity as classy actors but script is absolute bull very bad
An exciting view into history and the cruelty of man in the 12th century. Great acting and scenery.
This is a fantastic version of Robin Hood.
I really enjoyed this movie, the action, the acting, the sets, it was good.
Not being the biggest Russell Crowe fan I had pretty low expectations going into this movie. However I was pleasantly surprised to find this movie quite enjoyable. I enjoyed the twist on the classic tale and the film was shot beautifully. There may have been a few too many plot elements and they seemed to try too hard to fit in the classic characters who didn't really add much. The first half did drag a bit, but overall the fight scenes were done well and it was easy watching.
An entertaining and different version of the story that evoked the spirit of the legend. I enjoyed it, even if some of the dialogue was a bit corny. When you walk through Sherwood Forest today you can easily imagine Robin and his men hiding beneath the ferns or in the trees. So I like to believe there's just a bit of truth hidden in there somewhere.
It was enjoyable, But it really twisted what I thought bout Robin Hood. Ive seen other visions, So its was like stabbing them in the back cause the story line was different. But it was pretty good. Im not a Russell Crowe fan, and thought hed be way worse in it. But he was better than I thought Hed be. Give it ago, Has heaps of Action, and Drama. I'll always be a Robin Hood fan... So yeah, Give it ago! :)
Whilst I am not the worlds biggest Russell Crowe fan, and I delayed seeing this as I thought the story had been told already, I really enjoyed this movie! It was well acted by the entire cast and kept me engaged from start to finish! Loved it :-)
Excellent introduction to the myth of Robin Hood. Brilliant cast including our "own" Russel Crowe and Cate Blanchett. Terrific effects and well worth watching.
This is another great film by Russell Crowe - he is brilliant - you just cant help feeling his masculinity throughout the film, yet he can be so sensitive - I do hope he is like this in real life. To incorporate just a little humour into a really serious film is so good and his choice of support actors was fantastic - the music and animation in the opening and closing credits was also very well done. Could easily watch it again!
Excellent movie. Great story and great action.
Plot holes left and right.
Storyline is forced.
A different view on Robin Hood - fair enough... But its not different enough to be interesting. In fact, it goes for the rest of the movie - Not surprising or diffrent enough to be entertaining... and sinse it sure as hell does not TEACH us anything, then there is no point watching it.
... oh, and script for some scenes is clearly taken out from some "C" rated romantic clip for 12 year old girls... makes you cringe a lot.
I found this movie a hard slog to watch. It didn't grab my attention and I watched it in bits and pieces over the course of a whole day. In the end I did enjoy sections of it but it did take alot of determination to stay focused. Dark, drab and dreary. Surely the sun shone sometimes in Medievil England!
Let's do a sequel to Gladiator. Yeah great, no wait did'nt we kill him? Oh Yeah well we could do this thing instead. Curiosity value at most.
If you like war from the middle ages, with lots of arrows and swords, this has a fair bit for you interest. A bit more of a background of Robin Hood than we have seen before. Marian is a strong character. You'll be on Robin's side in this flick.
Not your conventional Robin Hood, but then not much was known about the real Robin Hood so licence can be taken with the legend. It was entertaining with Crowe and Blanchett having good chemistry. Pleasant chewing gum for the brain.
Expected to be bored but thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite long but it never lagged for us. Really good action scenes and story. The ending made us want more.
In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. Cate Blanchett saves this movie. She lights up the screen whenever she appears. Russell Crowe is quite wooden in this film. The film had some great moments but overall this is not Ridley Scotts best film by a mile
We watched this without any expectations and were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed it, an interesting take on Robin Hood's backstory. I'm not a Russell Crowe fan, but thought he played the part well, and Cate Blanchett was perfect as Maid Marian. This film had plenty of action and fight scenes to keep my husband happy but without the ick factor (I can't stomach blood and gore ) so I was happy too!
"G'day Ridley, hey you remember that bit in Gladiator where I was on a horse and someone chucked a sword up to me while I was at a gallop? Yeah I wanna do that again, twice if poss..."
I enjoyed this film, a great tale on various Robinhode myths and a bit of a "backstory" to the tales of Errol Flynn. Some great action, the keen social justice aspect of the champion of the common man, and of course Russ and Cate in the lead roles.
Well worth the watch, and apart from the French king wanting to speak in English, not so cringingly unhistorical as I might have thought.
I really enjoyed this different take on the Robin Hood Legend. It is a bit Gladiator in tights, but still enjoyed it.
There is something satisfying, when a film ends... 'and the adventure begins' and you say to yourself 'no, actually'. This is one of those films. It is trying to be the 'batman begins' of robin hood and doesn't really hit any positive notes. Great cast and some okay sequences, but it is long and overly complicated without being interesting. The fact that it clearly won't be a series of films, detracts from it, as this is really an overly long pilot episode for a series we won't see.
Russell Crowe was great in this movie. Although the story was different to when I watched Robyn Hood on TV in my teenage years, I did enjoy it. Kate Blanchard was good as was the whole crew.
Dear me what a disappointment. It was technically well made and beautifully shot, but the screenplay had little merit and the first 45 min felt like Ridley had just re-worked the opening forest battle in 'Gladiator'. Even the actor playing Richard I sounded like he was in a Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius) sound-alike competition; a totally uninspiring portrayal of a legendary monarch. Most accents were totally inaccurate historically (the Royals all spoke French back then. Richard's mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine, not Eleanor of Aldershot after all), and as for Russell's accent - or should that be accents - what on EARTH was he trying to do? This for me was probably the most irritating and distracting part of the whole movie. I became less engaged with the story and more interested in trying to pick what part of the UK he was trying to mimic. In one scene he even had a go at Liverpudlian! What little credibilty his character had went out the window at that point. Most battle scenes were pretty good though the climactic beach battle was a let down. It seemed rushed and far from realistic; Marian turning up with her feral sidekicks was laughable. Cate made little impression overall, another disappointment. Like most of the cast it was acting-by-numbers but at least her accent didn't waver. A notable exception was Max von Sydow - class and gravitas, and Mark Strong gave a strong performance of an pretty cliched character. A little nod to Matthew McFadyen for his small but perfectly formed role, as far removed from pretty-boy Mr Darcy as possible. The choice to barely involve the Sherriff in the plot was a wise one, after Rickman, no other Sherrif can take centre stage. Matthew seemed to relish his few lines - Russell could have taken a leaf from his book. I was left feeling cheated - this blancmange of a movie could have been a real cracker but to paraphrase the Sex Pistols: Pretty but Vacant.
Some of the reviews given of this movie just amaze me! This is a first class film that is not about love, so why do some comment about chemistry? What it is about is 2 people forced together through circumstance and who learn to accept each other. For example, kids on a beach is Marians way of helping and Robin accepted this by sending them to the back of the charge.
Little is known of the real Robin Hood, so who cares if it plays fast and loose with history... it's not a non fiction documentary and as the truth of Robin and Marian are much less exciting, I'll stick with this version as the one for me!
WOO HOOO Russell Did it again!! Loved this version of Robin Hood. was a bit worried when it differed from others I have seen but was very pleasantly surprised. must watch for all!
Lame. Almost beyond belief. And it takes itself so serioulsy!
"Ask me nicely." I loved the way Russell Crowe delivered that line.
4 stars BUT I have a few reservations about this movie, overall I enjoy it and recommend it. Do not expect an excellent epic film like the Gladiator or the fanciful, fictitious, daring Errol Flynn in very tight green tights. This is a story about how the legend of Robin Hood came to be, the man behind the man. This period movie depicts the TRUE England???s living conditions that was cruel ,harsh, frugal coupled with plenty of fighting and killing because that???s what they did to each other in those times. To much killing some say? (Google: King John or any other King for that matter for a look at injustice etc and see how many they had killed during their reign ) Ridley combines the Robin Hood myth with this stark tough reality in the first movie build up, understand there was a sequel planned that I suggest would lean more to the Errol Flynn, Sherwood Forest hero image. This movies does lose it???s way in parts and becomes a little bit dull, Maid Marion as a warrior detracts and is unnecessary. I still watched it again the next morning. Recommended for a quality nights entertainment.
If you'd walked in on this movie at 30 minutes you could easily mistake it for either Kingdom of Heaven or Gladiator both Ridley Scott movies. The same horses charging, and swords flying. This movie just bored the pants off me. Nothing new here and there was absolutely no chemistry between Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. The highlights were Mark Strong and Matthew Macfadyen - both in hilarious 'big' performances.
An original screenplay of a story that has been told to death. I enjoyed it, my husband found it boring. We both didn't like the mixed accents ie. northern Irish when he should have been south east england
this was a terrific movie , great story line a totally different slant on the Robin Hood story , Russell and Cate were great together , Looking forward to the next installment when he becomes Robin Hood .
Quite dull and uninspiring. Not one of Russell Crowe's finest hours.
Ah, you can't go past Russell and Cate for this type of movie. Excellent - realistic sets and clothing, great acting, story and characters.
Enjoyed the story, and cast, especially Cate Blanchett who was brilliant. Amazing sets/scenery but a bit on the long side, and a bit to much violence of a graphic (yet realistic) nature.
great movie, thoroughly enjoyed it.
This movie has a great cast, good wardrobe and appropriate scenery. The storyline is a classic.... So why was this movie so boring?!!
Entertaining enough, my husband enjoyed it.
This is a great movie as long as you treat it as complete fantasy.
It started out well enough, but at the point that we met the 'lost boys' in the forest I wasn't sure if I was in Robin Hood or Peter Pan.
Plus the bizarre battle sequence which had Marion in armour and the boys on what appeared to be Shetland Ponies. .... oh dear.
Could someone also explain how a long bow archer learnt how to wield a broad sword???
... and Russell, you should have used Cate's dialect coach, she was spot on, unlike your jump between yorkshire and irish!
New version of an old story works very well from the first scene. Russ hasn't been much better than this
A new take on the legendary hero wthout the glamour but with the grittiness of reality. a little slow to start but the pace and storyline grew.
Lots of action and if this is how Robin Hood originated then the plot is pretty good. Russell scrubbed up well in the outfit and Kate played a believeable Marion. We enjoyed it!
One of the worst films I've seen. Utter rubbish. Plays fast and loose with history for no good reason. The producers and the director should be ashamed.
Not a huge fan of this version and didn't think there was any chemistry between the main characters. Slow moving and struggled to stay interested. Okay but could have been much better. Worth the watch for Crowe fans.
maybe i was expecting to much but i this movie boring, not Cate Blanchetts best
work
I must have been watching another movie because I found this movie to be painfully slow and drawn out, setting up an abvious sequel. There was absolutely no chemistry between Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe did a competent job with the character but I thought the screenplay lacked lustre and intensity.
Again, exceptional acting by Russell Crowe, SFXs held you spellbound. Seems like there could be a sequel, one can only hope.
Blanchette on horseback enough said!!!
I thought we'd seen enough Robin Hood movies and the Errol Flynn version was always my favourite - apart from the musical cartoon version... and Men in tights was pretty good... but THIS Robin Hood is excellent. Everything about it is good - script, cast, locations, filming.... all great. Watch it several times becasuse you just can't absorb it all in one sitting.
ZZZZZZZ, (wake up on the credits)The movie has finally finished has it, thank u. Yes this is all I can say about this movie, it is boring, unrealistic and total trash. When I heard that it was a Russell Crowe/ Ridley Scott movie I was thinking like Gladiator or similar, doesn't even come close. Acting is wooden and the scenes have been made up, doesn't even come close to historical content. Watch it, but make sure you have a pillow and doona ready as you'll fall asleep.
We went in to this latest version of Robin Hood with fairly low expectations after the poor reviews it received at the cinemas, but we were pleasantly surprised. Mind you, it's not Robin Hood as you know it, it's very much pre-Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest. It's more Robin Hood meets Braveheart meets Gladiator. Very well made, fine cast and overall, very entertaining. Plenty of action and excitment, good guys and bad guys. Blockbuster stuff.
We really enjoyed this version of Robin Hood. Fantastic movie.
This was a great story of how Robin Hood began. Possibly a bit long but great overall.
