MEDIUM LEVEL VIOLENCE

Director: Sam Mendes
Actors: Stanley Tucci, Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Daniel Craig, Tyler Hoechlin

He shouldn't have been there. But in the moment that Michael Sullivan's son witnessed a brutal slaying, the lives of this 12-year-old and his gangster father are shattered irrevocably. Now, targeted by the mob he's devoted his life to, Sullivan and his son find themselves with nowhere to turn and a sadistic killer in relentless pursuit. It's here - in a fierce and primal struggle to stay alive and protect his boy - that this lifelong gangster will discover honour and redemption. Riveting, powerful and visually stunning, Road to Perdition ranks among the classic gangster movies of all time. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Jude Law are unforgettable as desperate men with everything at stake. Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 1999) brings his haunting vision to a hard-edged story of lost innocence, conflicted loyalty and ambition.

Technically excellent, great acting and the recreation of the 1930s looks superb. The problem with the movie is that the motivations for all the killings are flimsy, nonsensical or just stupid. Goes to spoil an otherwise interesting film.

In this genre I'd look to other films first. Quite slow and mostly predictable. I thought it was gonna be a lot better than what it is, but none the less it was still watchable and had its moments. Visually it is fantastic and it is a very interesting period of time to watch and Tom Hanks does a great job.

Director Sam Mendes’ Road was damnation for the film’s villains but, unfortunately, for me too. It’s too predictable, largely unbelievable, and any affinity for the tight-lipped protagonist hit-man Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) seldom rose above the “Who cares anyway?” kind. There is no doubt Sullivan is a killer, but the evilness of his deeds is side-stepped in favour of his role of being a loving parent in a quest for deadly retribution. Similarly the Depression era Irish gangsters were depicted more as nostalgic cartoon figures than as thugs. Only Jude Law’s character, murder scene photographer Harlen Maguire is unquestionably diabolical. The dark, water soaked cinematography was slightly surreal while the syrupy all-ends-well finale was unreal. One and a half stars.

Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) is the long-serving enforcer for John Rooney (Paul Newman), the local mafia boss controlling a Chicago suburb in the early 30s. His 12 year-old son, Michael Jr (Tyler Hoechlin), sees him leave the house smartly dressed everyday, as if going to the office, but he doesn't know exactly what his father does for a living. When he sees him getting ready to go out one night, he sneaks into the back of his Ford and hides under the seat. Arriving at a disused warehouse, his father joins a meeting of gang members, which turns out to be a kangaroo court to decide the fate of one of their number, who is promptly shot. Michael Jr witnesses the shooting through a peep-hole from outside, but he's noticed by one of the gang members as he scrambles back into the car. The boy is now vulnerable, and to protect him, Michael Sr has little choice but to find a hide-out to escape the hit-man who will surely be on the way. Sullivan is impressively portrayed by Tom Hanks who carries out orders with cool detachment, and as a man under an obligation to John Rooney, who brought him up. Whereas the Boss, played by Paul Newman, is unpredictable, switching from being friendly to being ruthless in a matter of seconds, and yet revealing an underlying sadness when his favourite 'son' has to be hunted down. A masterly performance. The Sam Mendes touch is apparent in every scene, beautifully shot by his cinematographer, Conrad L Hall. Both worked together in 'American Beauty'.

Despite the articipation of two of my favourites in Paul Newman and Daniel Craig and despite fine production values, I found this all a bit so what.

I liked this movie because it's a gangster movie that shows them as real people. People that love their families and would do anything for them. Great movie.

I hired this movie because of the cast:- Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. I was disappointed. Very convoluted story; very slow to get started (I almost stopped it after 20 minutes saying 'what is all this about?') This it took off and was quite good for 70% of the time, then the final ending slowed right down again. Not recommended unless you're into 'in depth' 20's gangster movies

A bit of a dark movie but the attention to detail in recreating the period is amazing, after watching this I am a bit confused as to why they went after Capones money.
