Why do cannibals travel in groups? If the world as we know it does indeed come to an end, and people are driven to eating their fellow man to stay alive, what is the advantage of working as a collective? Why do cannibals travel in groups? If the world as we know it does indeed come to an end, and people are driven to eating their fellow man to stay alive, what is the advantage of working as a collective? Would you be willing to sleep next to someone who willingly eats human flesh? Clearly, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my survival plans for when the apocalypse eventually goes down. Sadly, the answers to the aforementioned questions are not provided in John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s end-of-days novel The Road. Instead, the film focuses on conveying the overwhelming dread of a horrible situation. Although, it does provide plenty of handy tips for any future ‘Judgement Day’ journeymen. For instance, “never leave your shopping trolley of supplies unattended, lest Omar from The Wire steal it from you.”

As far as plot goes, there is little to discuss. A man (an incredibly effective Viggo Mortenson) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee), traverse the ash-drenched American terrain following some sort of apocalyptic event. We never learn what this particular disaster was, how it was caused, or even if it is finished. What we do know is that pretty much all flora and fauna has died, very few people are still alive, and there is little food left for even the few survivors (hence the palate shift towards humans). The man and the boy are devoted to their singular mission: stick to the road and head to the coast. All of their problems will be solved once they get to the coast. Sure they will.

The duo encounter several other survivors during the course of their journey, some friendly and some particularly unfriendly. The young boy is willing to trust and befriend these fellow travelers, perhaps unwisely. The man doesn’t trust anyone, and is prepared to murder if he feels even the least bit threatened. He’s wiser in this regards, but I certainly would never envy the psyche of a man without humanity over a boy with too much. As their plight grows more and more hopeless, the man toys with the two remaining bullets left in his gun. Killing a dangerous cannibal is one thing. But if worse comes to worse, will he be able to put his son out of his misery?

McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel is a short read, but an unforgettable one. Some of the imagery the legendary author evokes, particularly through his unique and often poetic prose, surpasses anything a filmmaker could capture on screen. However, Hillcoat does his best, and for the most part, he succeeds. The horrifically desolate landscape and the drab greys and cobalt blues of the scarred sky pervade every shot. Screenwriter Joe Penhall also manages to retain much of the book’s thematic focus, particularly in the way that the audience is asked to question the humanity of the man. I mean, when I say it like that, the film doesn’t exactly sound revolutionary in its thematic exploration. But trust me on this. The book, and now the film, poses some of the most interesting questions about the nature of morality; whether or not it must remain consistent always or whether it must be adjusted to suit our environment. Mortensen is perfect as the once-uncomplicated man dealing with these impossible questions.

That being said, the film simply cannot match the achievements of the book. In an effort to retain some of McCarthy’s prose, a lazy narration pops up every so often, with Viggo’s Man reminding the audience of his hopeless quest. For the last time, any screenwriters adapting a book for film, you need not take paragraphs wholesale from the original text and dump them into the film via narration. Whether you are adapting Leo Tolstoy or Charles Dickens or Alice Sebold or Stephanie Meyer or even Jodi Picoult, leave the prose to the pro’s and show us the emotions of the characters.

Perhaps even more misguided than the narration is the inclusion of the man’s wife into the proceedings. In the book she is mentioned only as a fleeting memory, but here she is presented in several flashback scenes, played by Charlize Theron. Her inclusion feels tacked on, and her appearance can’t match her haunting presence within the book. However, Theron is great - as always - and she does provide the film with one of its most upsetting sequences; no small feat in a movie featuring a human meat locker.

3.5/5

Read the book and loved it just couldn't imagine how a movie could be made of it. I was amazed at the excelent adaption to the screen, acting excellent, direction excellent, and the very grey mood of the subject matter coming across in almost colourless scenes. A movie that will remain in your mind for some time.

A grim film, very hard to watch sometimes because of the sheer brutality of humans intent on surviving. A possible future for humanity which has destroyed Nature.

If you've read the book then really don't bother with this film. As you read the book you can feel the hairs on your arms rise and you feel physically colder. This movie has none of the pure dread, horror and coldness of Cormac McCarthy's novel. In his book you really understand that the world is gone - it's gone and there will be no rescue, no cavalry, all the arguing, the religious mania, the pleading - it's all gone and what is left are the broken, desperate ones. John Hilcoat has taken out all the horror and only touched on the cannibalism leaving the movie with only boredom. Yes the cinematography is beautiful but it doesn't make for an interesting movie. You are better off watching 'Stake Land', another destroyed world, road movie - except this one has zombies.

Well directed movie. Surprisingly thought provoking,.Makes you think what would you do in the same situation? I thought about the reality of such existence to be some what futile. Does one live with hope? Hope for finding ones next meal ? Hope that man has survived and life will prevail??? Shoot your self with one of 2 bullets???

We are big fans of The Walking Dead, so we were expecting zombies to jump out at any minute. Well, they may not be zombies, but this post-apocalyptic film has the live humans effectively carrying on like zombies. Its very dark and bleak but Viggo does a fine job. I didn't like his son, he didn't seem to be too blemished or hardened from his years on the road surrounded by death. A couple of short but impressive cameos from Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce. Pretty good but found the ending a tad convenient.

Watched it once a while ago, and want to watch it again, for an accurate account of humanity at its worst under those sort of circumstances, While it is extreme and hard to believe the world would ever succumb to such depravity, It is not so far fetched to think, The survival of human compassion and consideration being tested in such a way would take a back seat when your family or friends could be the first ones to betray you and your sense of ranking and self importance in a society that lives in total denial so long as there is food on the table and crap to watch on TV, and is so close in reality, to being tested in such a way, Soon Hopefully.

I do not go in for horror and violence in life or on film but for some reason apocalyptic fims do seem to attract me and knowing that's the context of this film I was feeling dread from the opening. Certainly gave me a little too much to think about and I wouldn't recommend viewing this before hitting the sack because a sleepness night is garunteed. Skip the scene when they go into the cellar of the white house on the hill is another suggestion I would make. Otherwise, a good version of end-of-times.

Bleak but definitely worth watching. But be aware there is not a lot of story arc, more of a detail study of humanity. Story wise we get the middle bit, the beginning and end left largely to our imagination. But this, along with slow pacing seems an appropriate fit for the film. Great acting from everyone. My only complaint, I think they should have ended the film about 5 minutes earlier. I won't spoil it by saying why.

I love to watch movies that are a bit unusual and this is one of them. Dark and disturbing, full of anticipation for what was going to happen next. Also very sad and realistic. That it could happen to us at any time made it all the more disturbing. This is definitely not one of the usual Hollywood type of extravagant "end of the world" movies that we have seen before. Great acting too!

Very grim - interesting actors. If this is true to the famous book, I won't bother reading it. This is one of those survival stories of the 'nasty, brutish and short' view of humanity. Whilst the overwhelming disaster that has already happened is never specified, there is also no reason given for the lack of teamwork, banding together, ingenuity in growing food (eg mushrooms underground) etc.

A bleak depressive movie about the end of civilization as we know it with only relatively few survivors. There is a shortage of food and people hunt down other people to canabilise them. There are good people and bad people. It's a heartwarming story about a father and son and the push to make the son self sufficient before the father dies. It could leave the viewer feeling hopeless but there are moments when the couple see a beatle and, at the end, the son being taken in as part of a surviving family with two children.

Found this quite engrossing. Father trying to protect his son at all costs after post-apocalyptic event and his son questioning his fathers reasoning "Are we the good guys daddy?" Father has to kill and steal from others to survive but then tries to teach his son, that to survive, they must not to trust anyone, and that killing and stealing is done by "the bad guys" . Not sure why absolutely nothing survives after about 12 years (the age of the boy and he is born during the apocalypse ) as some vegetation would have regenerated, but found the story and cinematography well done.

Ok, some interesting questions raised about the nature of humanity and morality and how they might be seen differently according to extreme circumstance. I also appreciated some aspects of the relationship between father and son. But honestly, this was the most bleak, depressing, boring film I have ever seen in my life. No real glimmers of hope anywhere. The main point of the film seems to be just conveying how unthinkably awful it would be to live in such a world. Totally brilliant adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's amazing novel. The acting of all the characters is extremely powerful, and the depiction of what life would be like in a post-apocalyptic life was heartbreakingly realistic. This is not at all the typical trash dished out by Hollywood, so it probably won't be liked by those addicted to total unreality and "happy" endings.

A lot of people who rate this movie poorly seem to want a happy ending or more heroic characters, i.e. something completely less realistic, but feel good and typically (boringly) Hollywood. Thankfully The Road does not succumb to these common desires. The movie focuses wholly on the relationship of Father and Son in a depressingly bleak and dying world. The movie leaves a lot unanswered, but all of it intentional: how did the world end, where did authority go, why are the plants not growing, how did all of the animals die, was the whole planet affected? The viewer makes their own conclusions, though these questions are less relevant to the actual plot and character journey. One of the most excellent movies I have seen for a long time.

Boy, oh Boy - I like the idea of post apocalyptic world - and the struggle the survivor go through to survive - but this one was plain depressing. I expected better but ended up close to switching it off halfway. I never like a movie where the characters behave in an irrational way - this movie has just topped that category. I found the boy plain annoying. Vigo as the father did not win my sympathy. I could never sympathise with characters which see suicide as an option. As I said, my exasperation grew throughout the movie - and I was not rewarded in the end. Very disappointing - could have been an excellent premise for a great movie.

Yes, it's dark. No, it doesn't have a sweet, wrapped up with a bow ending. But that's life really - I'd describe this film as depressingly realistic and thought provoking. You will have to do some thinking and piecing together, but that's OK - not everything needs to be laid out on a plate for you with a clear back story. Themes of trust, basic human instincts and the love between father and son are intertwined with a scenario most of us can probably imagine, even if we'd rather not.

Not an uplifting story, but worth seeing for something very different to many other movies.

This movie was tense tense tense and very powerful stuff. It's just a shame the ending was such a total cop-out.

Really enjoyed this movie. A bit of unusual storyline, but once you start watching you won't want to leave your seat. Lots of suspense and an ending that's hard to predict.

This may have been a Pulitzer prize book, (which to me would have been even more boring to read) however it did not translate into as interesting and exciting a movie as the Overview implied. Far from it, in fact..... we are given very little explanation as to how the world is as it is now, despite the use of some flashbacks, where we could have easily been filled in... the flashbacks do not seem to serve much purpose except to show the family before the tragedy - whatever it is - has struck.... we felt that yes the pair were on a struggle for survival, but that they repeatedly made strange, unexplained and stupid decisions that instead of helping them survive, hindered their survival... All in all, it made no sense and there was no real story worth watching. A 2 is generous.

Not an easy watch but a rewarding one, i went out and got the book. A story of love between and father and son.

Having read some of the reviews it was interesting to see some diverse opinions on this one. In my view this is definitely a worthwhile movie to watch. It is engrossing, suspensful and downright frightening in parts, although it does have its slow bits. The cast and acting is excellent and the scenery matches the sombre mood of the story. Don't expect a feel good movie and if you are feeling a bit down, probably best to go for a comedy. You have to piece a few things together, which become clearer as the movie progresses but then the ending leaves you hanging a little, which has the effect of keeping you thinking long after the movie has stopped. There are some positive takeouts however, which is that 'good' shines through through, even in the bleakest of sceanrios .

What a disappointment. So gloomy and depressing. Obviously a take on a recent French film (which was much better) directed by Michael Haneke.

I was not really looking forward to this film having seen the shorts at the cinema, but thought I'd give it a go. Well I was pleasantly surprised & although a harrowing experience was rivetted to the screen. Brilliant acting, especially Robert Duvall even thogh a very small part.

A movie that resonates and haunts long after watching. Incredible acting by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-Mcphee add touching depth in portraying the lengths a devoted father would go to, to protect his son in the face of total desolation. An absolute must see.

I heard alot about this movie by friends and i think i expected a little too much from it. It seemed to drag on a bit towards the end but it had its moments where i was on the edge of my seat. The movie was alright overall but i wouldnt recomend it to anyone.

This is an amazing movie. It had me glued to my seat. This potrayed the good and the very horrible traits of humanity. God help us all if this was ever to happen............ This movie was brilliantly filmed and acted. The young Aussie boy was amazing in this film. 5 stars from me, which isn't enough for a movie such as this one.

Great movie. Yes, overall it's dark (what movie about nuclear holocaust wouldn't be) and shows the side to humanity many of us like to ignore (at our peril?) but it also demonstrates the amazing fighting spirit of humanity and the undying love between parent and child. Well shot and brilliantly acted, 5 stars from me.

Bleak and disturbing but very good. A fairly frightening vision of a post apocalypse society where death may be a better option than life. In the end we are given a glimmer of hope that there may be a more positive future. Recommended
