“You wouldn’t steal a car. You wouldn’t steal a handbag. You wouldn’t steal a movie…” Well, hang on now. Those anti-piracy warnings shouldn’t simply be reserved for the download-happy consumers at home. Occasionally filmmakers are guilty of cinematic-theft too. Miguel Sapochnik’s Repo Men is a sci-fi satire about the organ trade, but really, it’s a mash-up of every dystopian drama that’s come before it. The film combines (steals?) elements of Blade Runner, Dark City, Gattaca, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (?!) and Repo! The Genetic Opera (to the point that the makers of that film accused it of plagiarism). And, in the film’s most inexcusable moment of creative licence, there is an extended fight-sequence seemingly ripped right out of Oldboy. A shame really; Sapochnik shows off some filmmaking flair. It’s just hard to know how much credit he should really get.

The film takes place in the year 2025, in which a corporation called The Union offers bio-mechanical organs to those desperately in need of a transplant. If you can’t afford it right now, The Union offers you three months of credit. If you still can’t pay for the transplant after three months, a Repo Man is sent to your house to reclaim the organ (in exactly as bloody a fashion as you imagine). The best Repo Men in the business are buddies Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker); the former is desperate to move out of the unpleasant repossession business and into sales, while the latter lives to retrieve organs from no-good debt-dodgers. On his final job (and isn’t this always the way), Remy endures an accident that will require an artificial heart-transplant…and eventually leave him in debt to The Union.

So, the premise isn’t bad, the execution is snappy enough, and the cast, which also includes Liev Schreiber and Alice Braga, are likable (even if they're punching well below their weight). But how can I fully endorse a film that blatantly rips off other movies without so much as offering a wink to the audience. The cityscapes evoke Blade Runner, while the depiction of future-suburbia conjures A.I. and (shudder) Bicentennial Man. The thinly-veiled allusion to the stem-cell/organ-donor debate is right out of Gattaca, and to a degree, Robocop. Quentin Tarantino expertly remixes films from the past to create an entirely new beast. He’s Kanye West reworking little known soul numbers. Sapochnik is Flo Rida sampling “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)”. We’ve heard it all before. And better.

Repo Men toys with an original idea, only to abandon it in its inexplicable final third. We’ve just emerged from a credit crisis, the result of financial institutions over-lending to people they knew couldn’t possibly pay them back. Why didn’t Sapochnik (or Eric Garcia, who adapted his own novel - Repossession Mambo - upon which the film is based) comment on this unique angle, instead of simply riffing on previously explored ideas? Even they seem to acknowledge how tired their themes are, abandoning them in favour of gut-churning gore and bizarrely violent action sequences. Repo Men, despite promise, ends up being both an ideological mess and cinematic-mish-mash. Maybe The Union needs to work on an originality-gland?

2/5

almost eeverything is wrong about this movie, the plot , the acting, the editing it is a grand idea gone wrong.the intial spark of originality failed to be realised in celluloid and petered out within 10 minutes .

A hell of a lot of gore and fighting and (unbelievable) vitality in the fight scenes.....so much blood.....and gratuitous violence. I am not sure why I chose this except that I have a bit of a thing for Jude Law.......bit silly and long winded

Slow at times, the concept remains interesting. The problem is so many scenes could have been avoided. The movie seems so long. Some of the scenes are grandiose but so many boring bits lets the movie down. Half the movie I hoped The end was for soon. You can find better to watch.

Highly graphic, poor cousin of IN TIME (and that's not saying much at all, the latter at least having interesting imagery). Unlikable protagonists, no real villain. Interesting concept, and commentary on high risk lending for life's essentials should have played out better.

Seen "Gattaca" and "Ghost Dog"? Do not bother with "Repo Men". Disappointing, pointlessly violent... just kinda stupid.

For what the movie tried to achieve I believe it succeeded, the reason I give it two stars is because of the ending, I can't really say much more without spoiling it. If you like thrillers with lots of blood and guts and a dark sense of humour this is the movie for you.

Jude Law was brilliant, another fantastic job by him.Law & Whittaker work well together, and the film itself keeps you on the edge of your seat, I highly recommend this.

Enjoyed this. A bit gorey at times, but that's why it's R rated.

Yes it was an interesting concept which is what got me intrigued despite the lukewarm reviews. It also has some big stars, but they are not enough to pull this film off. Jude Law seems incredibly miscast in this film and his voice-over is truly awful. The plot doesn't hang together very well and there are some scenes where you just ask yourself 'why did they bother'? There is a lot of grisly organ retrieval but that is not what makes this film a bad watch. If i were you I wouldn't waste your time - go clean out the kitchen cupboards instead.

I knew very little about this before viewing so went in with an open mind. It was an interesting concept and kept me entertained throughout. Not for the squeamish and a little excessive in the showing of blood and guts at times, but if that doesn't bother you and you enjoy movies that pose moral questions plus have a twist, give this a look. Had something of a 'Gattaca' feel about it - another Jude Law film that I enjoyed

I can handle most movies but this was repugnant. In addition it kept on freezing on my DVD Player, then there was a zoning problem when I tried to play it on my computer.

Topic and story line was good. Too much violent and showing organs is disgusting. After sometime movie becomes boring and seems too slow. End is surprise. Overall, could have been far better.

Was only in the queue to fill space, and from the get go was only hoping it didn't totally blow goats. Moaned when it seem to clumsily take on complex ethical issues by using the physics Schrodingers cat paradox. I jumped to the conclusion that the film was biting off more than it can chew. I was wrong this movie does not ask any more from the audience than the viewer is prepared give, it's content to rely on the action and flow of story, delivered by a more than competent cast. There is more to it than that though, the ethical questions will stay in my thoughts for days and amuse me long after the stop button is pressed. Almost prepared to rate this film in the four to five star range thanks to a brilliant kill sequence, but the twist was predictable and there were a few premises that just don't get past my bull dust detector. And I don't mean the far fetched aspects of the film 'cos that's the point of Sci-fi, it's more some of the characters thought processes. Well worth the trip to the mail box.

Started out really good, but quickly went downhill. Dragged on quite a bit. Probably wouldn't recommend it unless you've got nothing else to watch.

This movie you either like or hate, judging by other reviews. The concept is not really that far from the truth. In some parts of world today, there are organ smugglers, and there are people who will sell their body parts, and in the US , you can sell your blood to blood companies, so how long until you can buy or even lease body parts. The day will come, if you can't afford hundreds of thousands of dollars for a heart/lung transplant for your loved one , wouldn't you look at leasing. Who says a transplanted organ can only be re-used once. The idea of the retrieval process if you don't pay is the hard question here. The end got a bit silly, I am sure The Union would have backup systems, but it is a movie, not the news , so enjoy.

Hmm. Well. Confusion reigns here. Great idea and some solid concepts in there. Unfortunately the director, cutting people and maybe the story people weren't on board at all. What the? Two of my favourite actors completely left in the lurch. Rotten tomatoes splatted it and I do too. This movie could've easily been better - what on Earth and all the other liveable planets happened?

Top flick - sci-fi action with a few brain cells, top notch cast, but won't be for everybody due to some violence and the odd bit of gore. Not bad at all, considering they've pinched the premise from "Repo - A Genetic Rock Opera". a bit different, a little far fetched, and the last twenty minutes or so are killer...
