surprisingly good, quite watchable and enjoyable
Given that this movie is based on true events, it is truly terrifying. It had some really scary, edge-of-your-seat moments, where I really did feel fear. If you have a fear of sharks, or of drowning, this movie will definitely have your nerves on edge.
worth watching, good aussie actors. Well directed.
Brillanty done and way better then the over rated Open Water proveing Us Aussies can really make films as decent if not better then the Americans. Well acted and VERY suspenseful in places and one Jump scene that nearly made me fall off the couch and it wasnt the shark either(Scared him too).
this movie starts off slow but keep watching as it really picks up!
If you loved Open Water well you're gonna enjoy this movie. I loved it:)
Of course it's a shark attack type film as the cover suggests, however the acting is fantastic, it's based on true events, not gory; but filled with clever & well developed suspense. I was so pleased that for once an Aussie film was not corny at all. Very well done and if you don't mind a shark film then it's a good pick.
Please, if you have this movie on your list. TAKE IT OFF and save yourself the torment of sitting through this awful movie as you start to realise that you will never get this 90 minutes of your life back. Even for an Australian movie it was just plain terrible.
Great Aussie Flick! Definitely a more realistic film... probably as it based on true events. Worth a watch!!
Not far from OPEN WATER, this Aussie flick is a real gem once you have passed the 10/15 minutes beginning the movie which looks more like Home And Away. After that it's all good and the work with the sharks is excellent, the soundtrack adds to the nerves as JAWS did at the time. A really good surprise indeed.
If you are into suspense and sharks-this is for you. Very well done and keeps hold of you all the time !!
Afte reading Christine's and Sue's reviews I can only wholeheartedly agree. Unfair to compare it to Jaws etc - c'mon people, the story could only be told as it happened which is the truly horrifying part. Life and death decisions were made by real people in a terrible situation; they were trying to survive - not make an interesting plot for a future movie! I recommend seeing it.
Enjoyed this movie, although in some parts it was a bit slow and you kept waiting for the jaws music to start up.
Loved the acting but the movie as a whole didn't leave much of an impression (probably because I've seen Open Water.....
So important to read the reviews before you select dvds, this movie was trajic! why are aussie films becoming less apealing!
Have to laugh at all the reviews calling this predictable...it's based on a true story so of course we know what happens...derrr! Also I don't think classifying this as a 'shark' movie does it justice. It's a movie about raw human emotion, helplessness and inevitable death and there's no disappointment in the way these actors achieve the reality they are depicting. Being a sailor I also totally believe the lack of up-to-date EPIRB. This was not a commercial cruise charter - it was a private boat about to be crew-transported to Indonesia. Many private yacht owners neglect their safety kit just like lots of other sportspeople neglect to wear protective gear and service their equipment. I was on the edge of my seat the whole movie regardless of knowing the 'plot'. That's a sign of a well directed and acted movie. I loved it.
Makes U Think Twice.......Good Film To Watch
Absolutley Loved This !!! What a great suspense movie. Considering the set dosen't change, that there are not alot of characters, my husband and I were on the edges of our seats and the fact its based on actual events only makes it scarier ...
Despite movies of similarity such as 'Open Water', 'The Reef' successfully manages to hold it's own, offering intense suspense and making you question what you would do in a similar situation when a vital decision had to be made. Highly recommended and really worth watching.
It is one of the better shark movies, however like most shark movies is predictable.
Its a very good movie, very suspensful, but I am never going back in the water after watching this!!!
One of the better Aussie films out there.
Great cinematography and shows a very real scenario of what can happen if you hit the ocean with an unprofessional team, no survival raft, no tracking device, no flares and no life jackets. The entire story was rather predictable but very scary due to excellent acting but cos I can't stand Damian Walsh-Cowling and feel he is a poor actor in all his movies I couldn't give this five stars. Well worth watching just to see what can go really wrong if you take the cheap way out of tourism on Australian waters.
awesome movie, watched it 4 times while had it and most probably get it again.not predictable like other movies like it.
In one word....Predictable....though I wouldnt watch just before heading to the beach fr a swim !!
It was surprisingly good, and its a true story.
keep me and my daughter in suspense all the way through the move.
We'd recommend this move
I did not expect to like this movie after a few negative reviews, but it just goes to show that you just got to try it out for yourself. This movie is not some big hollywood blockbuster, it is a movie based on true events. I thought the film was great. You get to appreciate what these people must have gone through. You just can't compare a true story like this with hollywood shark movies.
The story that a modern yacht with a experienced Captain does not have a depth sounder, SatNav, survival raft kit or an up to date EPIRB is unrealistic. The story line is not believable and lacks suspense. Would advise that you do not bother to watch this movie.
Worst shark movie ever. Acting was awful. Shark scenes look real.
A very realistic story - because it's based on a real life account - without adding the Hollywood over dramatising. There are no glib lines. The characters are true to life and convincing. The action is very well filmed and depicted with edge-of-the-seat suspense. You really do not know what will happen til it does. This is not one of those predictable stories with the heroic finish. I was left affected by it. Australian drama at its best.
"The Reef" is just like other Shark Movies..You'll watch it once and that's it..Same Old Same Old..As the last reviewer said NOTHING COMPARES TO JAWS- That's exactly right..
UNFORTUNATLY IT WAS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES YOU KNEW WHO WAS GOING TO DIE, AND IN WHAT ORDER.
I FOUND IT NOT GRAPHIC ENOUGH
STILL NOTHING RATES AS GOOD AS "JAWS !!"
