Based on the cult DC Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer, RED is an explosive action-comedy starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. Frank (Bruce Willis), Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) used to be the CIA's top agents - but the secrets they know just made them the Agency's top targets. To stop the operation, the team embarks on an impossible, cross-country mission to break into the top-secret CIA headquarters, where they will uncover one of the biggest conspiracies and cover-ups in government history.

Breaking necks and cashing (pension) cheques
by Simon Miraudo,

I hate to sound like a disrespectful whippersnapper, but I’d begun to doubt the potential of action films starring actors of a certain age. The last movie to feature a fleet of pension-collecting heroes – The Expendables – was about as rollicking as a ride on a single-speed rascal, and had a screenplay messier than a bowl of mushy peas. By comparison, Robert Schwentke’s RED boasts a cast that makes Dolph Lundgren look like Justin Bieber. However, it’s an energetic action film with charm to spare. Stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich reveal themselves to be a more believable team of ass-kickers than The Expendables, The A-Team and The Losers combined. I guess they’ve been taking their Omega 3 tablets. RED is based on Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic seri...

RED is based on Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic series of the same name. I’ve not read it, but I hear that the film excises much of the comic’s political commentary in favour of zany action sequences. I’ll leave it to the fans to tell me whether or not that’s a criminal offense. The madcap final product we are left with seems like a fine compromise. Bruce Willis stars as Frank Moses, a former CIA agent learning to be a retiree. He fills his days by flirting over the phone with customer service operator Sarah Roses (Mary-Louise Parker) and attempting to blend into the suburbs. He’s not very good at either.

Moses’ retirement is brought to an abrupt end after an assassination attempt by a mysterious hit squad. He gathers up the reluctant Sarah, who he (rightfully) believes is also in danger, and meets up with his fellow retired agents to figure out who’s trying to kill them. His ragtag ensemble includes the loyal Joe (Morgan Freeman), the unhinged Marvin (John Malkovich) and the classy, sultry Victoria (Helen Mirren). The film also features the immensely likable Brian Cox as a Russian spy and Karl Urban as a devoted company man sent to wipe out Moses’ crew.

RED is an efficient and expertly made flick, although it lacks a personal touch from director Robert Schwentke (say what you will about Zack Snyder, but he leaves an indelible print on his comic book adaptations). The film’s central mystery is intriguing enough, but really, we’re here to see this surprisingly sprightly cast bounce off one another. They offer echoes of the similarly lovable Ocean's Eleven crew (albeit with a slightly higher median age).

I may have spent much of the review teasing the age of the actors, but I do so with love. The best part of RED is the way in which it trusts older actors (as in: older than Shia LaBeouf) to carry an action film. They approach their roles with dignity and grace, yet still carry themselves (and their weaponry) as you would expect any action hero to do. The film even goes to the effort of casting the 93-year-old Ernest Borgnine in a warm little role. He reminded me of Desmond Llewellyn’s Q from the Bond series; an actor who was later ousted by the (relative) youngster John Cleese in Die Another Day. Something about replacing Q didn’t feel right. After all, James Bond’s aren’t replaced when they become too old – they’re replaced when they stop being cool. Willis, Malkovich, Freeman, Mirren – and even Borgnine - are yet to jump that shark.

3.5/5

Everything about this movie is brilliant. You've got an all-star ensemble cast, a clever and intriguing story and a healthy mix of action and comedy. Bruce Willis and John Malkovich are perfectly cast in their respective roles, and Karl Urban is understated but fantastic as the CIA agent trying to do his job even though he's being manipulated. Whilst Helen Mirren steals every single scene she's in with her beauty combined with badassness.

Red is a really good movie with lots of action, lots of stunts, lots of shooting and lots of fun. The acting is superb, with Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Richard Dreyfuss lighting up the screen with some very funny lines. Ok, like most movies of this genre, it had a storline that was barely believable, but then it never led you to believe that it was totally serious. Recommended.

This is a fun movie with a lot of "what the" moments. John Malkovich has the most of these moments and made me laugh out loud, a lot. The whole cast were great to watch working together. You have to suspend belief a few times with how smoothly these people operate. Bruce Willis stepping out of a moving, spinning car and firing at the same time is one nicely filmed action sequence. It is totally unbelievable, yet well done.

The old CIA team are brought together through someone trying to kill off each member because they still had knowledge about what happening years before. What a mistake to take this lot on the Bloke must have been brain dead, should have left them alone and stayed alive.

I love movies with high profile stars clearly having a lot of fun. It's an entertaining story that's not meant to be taken as a realistic representation of a secret agent's life. It's an enjoyable romp with good scripting and some wonderful moments.

as a retiree, I have to say I loved this movie. The casting of WIllis and Parker, his love interest was superb. Even better was Malkavich as a crazed retiree living in the deep south of the US. Helen Mirren as a retired assasin was also good. This movie is played for laughs but is full of action too. I would highly recommend it.

I thought this movie was brilliant, the cast were excellent and the image of Helen Mirren with a sniper rifle and John Malchovic being slightly nuts was a case of genius casting. Maybe I'm missing something here, but I thought this movie was dreadful. With such a good cast, I was expecting a lot more. Mary-Louise Parker's acting was stilted and probably ruined it for the rest of them. I was bored to tears after half an hour and simply couldn't watch any more. For fans of Oceans 11 et al. Sadly, despite a really classy ensemble cast; RED fails dismally because the story is just plain ridiculous with so many holes in it that the threads that hold it together are stretched beyond incredulity. If you want a great espionage movie; stick with the Bourne trilogy. If you want a slick ensemble piece; stick with the Oceans trilogy: You have been warned......

Very fun movie. The stunts that they do are over the top, but fit in with the style of the movie so well. Pity Helen Mirren wasn't in it more, her character could have been more interesting to see for longer, and John Malkovich was fantastic as always. Doesn't take itself too seriously, which some of these types of films can (and so they miss the mark, unlike this one).

Funny, action packed 'tongue-in cheek' movie with a great cast.

Although predictable, this film didn't disappoint. Mary-Louise Parker was fabulous and Bruce Willis was also great. Morgan Freeman plays the same style character he plays in all movies (yawn - though I suppose Bruce Willis could be accused of that too) but Malkovich was a nice surprise. An absolutely all-star cast makes this movie worth watching - even if the plot is a little predictable.
