I can totally see why an Oscar was in order - Jamie Foxx IS Ray Charles. I didn't realise how many of the songs that I love belonged to Ray - this has opened my eyes to a far more talented musician than I first thought. Opened my eyes to a whole new appreciation of Jamie as an actor, too, as he had the movement and mannerisms down pat. Spent the middle of the movie lamenting the fact that I didn't like Ray for his off-stage behaviour, but his story is fascinating and this is a very well-told tale. Great Movie. Successfully ambushed my husband too, who wouldn't have picked this in a million years (not enough guns or robots) but he was suitably impressed also.

What a heart warming story of a blind, black musician with a huge personality who becomes an icon in his time.

"Ray" with Jamie Foxx. This film was fantastic and rates a 5 out of 5. I did not know his "story" and was surprised to find out that he was a heroin addict and his adultery with a lot of women, but still he "loved" his wife and children in his own way and would not leave them, even though he could not get past his addiction. I think this is a must see movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it - and the music is great.

Tedious. The movie is far too long and lots of scenes that do little to advance the story or are peripheral could easily have been left out. The music is great, the life story of interest, but nothing much else gels with the movie.

Amazing movie with a brilliant cast. I?m still amazed at how well Jamie Foxx played Ray, movements, speech and even looks. The view on his life, not positive or negative, just what is. In one word amazing!

This is great movie. I would have given it five stars but it suffers from that Hollywood schmaltzy goody-two-shoes sentimentality in parts. Otherwise ..... outstanding.

Ray Charles (1930-2004) - talented musician, shrewd businessman, womanizer, heroin addict who overcame blindness, racism and a poor upbringing to become the chart topping success that he was. He was good at mimicking other black artists at the time but eventually found his own style and was the first to combine Gospel (God's music) with RnB (Devil's music) which caused a stir!

It helps if you like the music, but is not critical. Much fascinating insight into the challenges and hurdles confronting even the most talented African-Americans through the 1950s to 1980s.

Jamie Foxx was entirely deserving of his Oscar nomination, his portrayal of an innovative and thoroughly unpleaant individual is incomparable. Otherwise I am not sure that that is the way to tell the story.

This was a brilliant story of the life of one heck of a musician who had unbelievable talent. He truly set the pace for music over time and his fight back from the edge was yet just another of his remarkable journeys in his life. Would have liked to see more of his later life's story on the straight and narrow, hat off to his wife!!

not as good as your reviewer would have us believe. Warts and all it may be and for sure a great performance by Jamie Foxx - but why did I feel like everything was always working out for Ray despite those warts and how much did it seem REALLY disjointed? I mean even though it only covered a small portion of Ray Charles' life, I still felt for a 2.5 hour movie there were too many characters and it tried to cover too many strands. After all the praise and the Oscars, I guess I expected a WHOLE lot more :(

Great insight into the man behind the music. We got to see a side of Ray Charles that was kept very private. Jamie Foxx was unreal in the role and deserved his Oscar. Very long movie but well worth the time.

If you liked his music, I would seriously recommend this. The extended version is somewhat more revealing and delves into his infidelities and drug use quite a bit more than the theatrical version. Don't bother if that's not of interest. I thought the ending was pretty much an invitation to the sequel as it happens half-way through his life. I cannot believe that a character such as Ray has a boring second half to his life! Maybe sometime in the future....
