I just don’t know if we’ll see a film as smart or fun or overwhelmingly rich as Rango for the rest of the year. That’s not meant to be a pre-emptive dis on the rest of 2011’s cinematic output, but a hyperbolic smothering (my favourite kind!) of adulation on Gore Verbinski’s perfectly realised animated spaghetti-western satire. It’s been written numerous times (by me of course) that I have no time for children’s pictures that lean too heavily on pop culture references and real-world jokes, such as when Shrek gives a shout out to Jersey Shore or when the cast of Madagascar break it down to the latest Flo Rida song, or whatever. In my opinion, that’s no better than the point-and-state “look, there’s Lady Gaga” style of humour from the Friedberg/Seltzer “comedies” Disaster Movie, Epic Movie et...

In my opinion, that’s no better than the point-and-state “look, there’s Lady Gaga” style of humour from the Friedberg/Seltzer “comedies” Disaster Movie, Epic Movie etc. Rango is closer in style to the Edgar Wright spoofs Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and his razor-sharp-satire Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, in which the references to other films are made lovingly and inserted appropriately, and never at the expense of pacing or characterisation. Sure, movie fans will appreciate the fact that Rango is a frantic-fusion of classics as Yojimbo, Chinatown and The Man With No Name trilogy – with a smattering of action sequences that recall the Indiana Jones series at its best - but they’ll love that it’s a standalone work of excellence that requires no prior knowledge of film history to appreciate it.

The picture begins with a pet chameleon – voiced by the eternally-youthful-sounding and wonderfully playful Johnny Depp – attempting to stage an epic theatrical production inside his glass cage with his only companions: a fake tree, a wind-up goldfish, and a headless, limbless Barbie doll. It doesn’t seem like his owners have christened him with a name, so he is obsessed with the existential dilemma that consumes us all (“Who am I?”) and has convinced himself he is an actor; the one profession that is both fed by, and feeds, such neurotic anguish. When he is accidentally stranded in the Nevada desert - thanks to some appropriate cosmic randomness –he happens upon the little town of Dirt, populated by animals and western archetypes. Seeing an opportunity for a quick rebrand, he introduces himself as ‘Rango’, the fastest, most dangerous gunslinger that they ever done saw.

Although feisty rancher’s daughter Beans (Isla Fisher) is suspicious of Rango, the rest of the townsfolk are more than eager to celebrate him as their new champion. It seems Rango has wandered into Dirt as it teeters on the brink of collapse. A drought threatens to ruin the town, and the bank can’t account for all the missing water that was recently deposited by the local citizens. Kindly Mayor Tortoise John (Ned Beatty) isn’t worried, and if that weren’t enough to make you suspicious of him, his Noah Cross-esque speeches should do the trick.

Although it might fly over the littlies heads, you have to appreciate the timely (but also timeless) jabs made at the expense of exploitative landowners and financial institutions. The animals of Dirt cannot comprehend how the bank – their most trusted establishment – could simply lose all their water by the time of the drought. Surely storing it there during the flush years meant the bank would take care of them on a not-so-rainy day? As is often the case during poverty and environmental devastation, the Dirtians turn to religion, performing a ritualistic dance and prayer as they head to the “Holy Spigot”, hoping the giant tap will provide them with some much needed hydration. It churns out nothing but gloop and mud. This is some brutal social commentary.

Fear not; the movie avoids the on-the-nose lecturing and point-making of Happy Feet, and kids probably won’t be bothered comparing Rango it to fellow post-GFC pics Inside Job or The Company Men. Still, that incisive satire is merely the cherry on top a film as visually gorgeous, fantastically funny and consistently action packed as this. The animation, from first-timers Industrial Light and Magic, is as close to photorealistic as we’ve seen (without it tumbling into the uncanny valley). The animals are grimy and gross, but in the same way the extras were in True Grit; there is an attention to detail here usually only achieved by the dreamweavers at Pixar. John Logan’s screenplay finds the perfect balance in appealing to both kids and adults alike, and Verbinski, freed from the constraints of his dead-in-the-water Pirates saga, is able to show-off his mastery of the action set piece without having to tie it to that series’ convoluted mythology.

There were moments where I felt the film got a little too spooky for anyone under the age of, well, twenty-five, and that it really would have benefited from a better defined, more imposing antagonist. But anytime I felt pangs of doubt about Rango's greatness, we were treated to a vibrant action sequence, a wonderful character moment, or a sly little reference to another classic picture. Although it shan’t sit alongside The Good, The Bad and The Ugly or Chinatown in the pantheon of all-time greats, it has rightfully earned a place beside fellow western-comedies Three Amigos and Blazing Saddles. And in a year when Pixar’s big release is Cars 2, we could be looking at a new contender for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. And, dare we say it, a potential Best Picture nominee…

4.5/5

This is one of the funniest animated movies I have come across - Johny Depp as Rango was brilliant again... He seems to have a knack in finding good humour lately, and this one is no different... a good family film..

When Rango was screening in Melbourne, my friend told me it's more suited to older kids and adults. Now I've watched and I do agree with her assessment. It's fun but the concepts in the film can be a bit dark and scary. Still I do find the film interesting and entertaining.

Really quite odd film, seems like it's trying a bit too hard to be 'deep' with lotys of 'who am I?' introspection and also trying a little too hard for 'funny' one liners. I spent most of the film wondering what the point was.

I SO didn't want to watch this, and bucked and kicked regarding even the possibility of marking it down, but I must say once you get through the creepy chameleon's eyes, it's really good, and I wouldn't mind watching it again. There's one scene that's a little weird, yet the snake in the cowboy hat is rather appealing, and the sheer luck that follows Rango around is absolutely fantastic. A life of good fortune... that's the way to go! Not for kids, though. A tad scary in parts, and they wouldn't handle some of it. For adults, not bad. A cartoon adventure that's legitimate. Nice.

This a great movie for all ages, well at least the majority of us who aren't dissuaded by top level cg. The story detail is quite original though it does have a lot of deliberate western cliches that work well. At least twice they managed in a single routine to achieve universal humor ie the whole family laughs at the same time. I have to rank this as one of my 2 favorite Depp movies. The weakest part of the movie is the start, too long, too irrelevant and the important parts are skipped over too briefly. Still it doesn't ruin a great movie.

My five year old daughter loved it. I enjoyed it as much. I didn't find it slow like other reviews but well paced with the spagetti western take off very amusing. The visuals were stunning - I'll be buying the blue ray when it comes down in price. If you like Tim Burton's films this will probably be uo your alley.

We were highly anticipating this film having never getting to see at the cinema and the trailer had looked good. However we were somewhat disappointed. Some fantastic animation and voice overs, but the story was shallow and it was over long. My wife went to sleep during the video. This animated feature is so well made and written, it had us from the get-go. Johhny Depp's voice, while sometimes unrecognisable, is perfect as the noble but erratic lead character. Isla Fisher as Beans is also very good. The production is first class and kids will enjoy the action on screen, while adults should get a laugh out of the very clever dialouge. Don't miss.

Very good background development to the story, but I felt the clarity of the dialogue let the movie down. I had to rewind quite a few times to listen again, which made it less enjoyable. Lots of action, bravado and humour for all ages. Lovely detail on the animation - almost made me feel like I was sweating in the desert out there with them. I think Johnny Depp is an incredible actor, but I think the could have been a better choice for Rango's voice.

Stellar voice cast and absolutely jaw dropping animation can't disguise the fact that this film has in no way original, has little plot and even less humour that hits the funny bone. The highlight is a great cameo by Timothy Olyphant as the Spirit of the West.

Kids wern't fussed and I didn't really bother watching after about the first 10 minutes except to keep an eye on things (as I feel I must with PG ratings). It is supposed to be a comedy I think, but perhaps it is aimed at a slightly older audience.

If you've been waiting for a cartoon remake of "Chinatown", complete with lizards as the main characters, then this is the movie for you. Equal measures silly and sophisticated, but you've seen it all before in a hundred westerns.

Loved it! Really different movie, and I don't know why it didn't get as much promotion when it was out in the cinemas. It's a fun movie and a great twist on old western movies. The whole family will enjoy. Worth watching more than once, Johnny Depp's voicing is amazing, you can hear the effort he put into Rango to make him stand out.

not really sure what I expected but different in the best way with Johnny Depp! my 12yr old and I enjoyed it. I was a little 'restless' with middle of movie but overall well done. prob wouldn't watch again.

Not as good as expected, didn't feel it was really made as good as it could have been, especially for the younger ones. Expected it to be funny, but wasn't.

Loved this movie - as story within a story. Characters are excellent, very Wind-in-the-Willows look to them. It's a western - stranger rides into town and the locals look to him for help to defeat the mean overlord.. etc, but it's also a 'coming of age' story and more. I was so distracted by the amazing art work we had to watch it again. This is one to buy. It's amazing - but take note, it's not a kids movie. Just because stories are animated does not automatically make them kids movies. There animation for big kids too, you know!

A gritty western with critters instead of cowboys. The bright and colourful cover-art doesn't represent the look of the movie at all. Most of the jokes are aimed at an adult audience. Johnny Depp is suitably wacky. I liked it but my three-year-old said "Too scary!"

As with any movie Johnny Depp is involved with it is rather strange! Thought my Grandchildren would have liked it but they just got bored with it and didn't really hold much intesest for my Husband and myself. Rather disappointing.

The greatest western ever (I usually don't like westerns). Fantastic CGI, fun characters and a great story. Lots of laughs for the young and some for the older viewers too. Don't miss this one. Rango is a tropical lizard in the desert like a fish out of water. With his acting ability he cons the townsfoke of Dirt that he is a tough guy who can kill 7 bad guys with one bullet. With Dirt running out of water the Mayor makes Rango Sherrif.

Not a movie for the little ones as some content isnt suitable and some scenes may frighten them. The use of words like "trollop" and "tart" in my opinion arent necessary in a PG movie either, even if they were used only once. Not a bad storyline based on an old west scenario for older children and the characters are cute. Has some funny moments too. Older viewers will get a laugh out of "the spirit of the west" but you will be surprised at who voiced him!
