Deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums lies an impenetrable multi-level safe house for the world's most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police.

Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when their cover is blown and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, all the building's exits are blocked. Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city's worst to survive...

You'll believe a man can die! Welsh-born, Indonesian-based director Gareth Evans has delivered one of the most stirring action films in eons with The Raid, a relentlessly brutal and endlessly enjoyable flick that never runs out of inventive ways to kill people. Searching for relative comparisons, Jackie Chan's Police Story, Neveldine and Taylor's Crank and all things John Woo immediately come to mind. But The Raid still feels like its own thing, and it's such an accessible crowd-pleaser (for adult-only crowds, of course), it might do for Indonesian cinema what Shiri and Oldboy did for South Korea, Ong-Bak did for Thailand, and what The Killer did for China. Prepare to welcome some astounding new talent to the world stage. Martial arts star Iko Uwais plays Rama, the last good cop in Jakart...

Martial arts star Iko Uwais plays Rama, the last good cop in Jakarta. With a pregnant wife at home, and an estranged brother on the run, he has plenty of reason to want the streets of his home-town cleaned up. He'll start by striking Indonesia's black heart: a decrepit apartment block inhabited almost exclusively by drug-dealers, murderers, rapists, and machete-wielding gangsters - all of whom are outrageously skilled fighters. The worst of the worst, Tommy Wiseau-looking kingpin Tama (Ray Sahetapy) presides on the top floor, aided by violent sidekicks Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian) and Andi (Doni Alamsyah). Though Rama infiltrates the building as a single cog in a well-oiled police team, order quickly disappears when the building's inhabitants fight back. Soon, it's a struggle for the police to get out alive. Rama, however, is intent on finishing what he started.

So begins a tornado of violence unlike anything we've seen before. Writer-director Evans is clearly of the 'video game' generation; not only does there seem to be an endless supply of enemies to act as bullet-fodder, but the very concept of rising 'up' through the levels and fighting various 'bosses' along the way is practically the essence of old-school gaming. Still, it's impossible to even note the episodic nature in which the film progresses amidst the unforgettable fight scenes (choreographed by Uwais and Ruhian). Each and every one acts as a reminder of how poorly action set-pieces are constructed in most major pictures.

There is enough meat on the (shattered) bone to make this a substantial treat beyond the experience of seeing people murdered so creatively. There's some commentary on the state of corruption in Jakarta, and more than a few parallels to The Departed (or, if you will, the Hong Kong original Infernal Affairs). Their inclusion is welcome. However, people are coming to The Raid for one thing and one thing only: bloodied, brain-breaking battle royales to the death between a series of increasingly talented martial artists. It delivers.

4/5

This movie was really well done. It kept me intrigued and i found it enjoyable to watch even though its ina different language (yes, subtitles people!!) BUT it didnt seem to sway from the story as not alot was said and words were spoken with action! I would def. recommend if into action and i could easily watch this again and/or even add it to my DVD collection for future viewing on a whim :-)

Best gun-totting knife-wielding bone-craking blood-spurting multi-martial art gig EVER! Not for the WEAK-gutted...or subtitle readers!

Loved it, super violent but if that doesn't worry you the tension and martial arts are amazing. Both myself and my wife loved it.

Surprisingly good - good action scenes, editing. If you're into a lot violence and fight scenes in a movie then this is for you. It won't disappoint. The story is passable.

Not bad for a foreign language film, fight scenes went on a bit long but a good film after all.

The violence in this movie is very unnecessary and totally over the top the fighting scenes are at times cool, besides the over use of "boom" "k-pow" and "grunting" sounds. This move has some okay direction, at time some nice acting and camera work. Over all I would not recommend this movie.!

An elite police raid on a criminal compound goes badly wrong. A fast moving and action packed film made in Indonesia that shows the Americans how it should be done. The violence is raw and not dependent on special effects.

Thin on plot, but more than makes up for it with lashings of brutal martial arts action. It you like Ong Bak, or The Protector with Tony Jaa, then this will be right up your alley.

Quite a violent film, close ups of men shooting others in the head, very poor dialogue with excessive use of the F word. I lasted 20 minutes before turning it off. For a foreign film it wasn't worth watching

A group of Indonesian SWAT members are trapped in a 30 story building assaulted on all sides by hardened crims all versed in the art of silat. Best movie since the original John Carpenter - Assault on Precinct 13. The thing I most noticed, apart from the amazing fight scenes, was the tension. You were holding your breath for most of the film, on a knife edge waiting for the next 'incident'. The storyline was brief but enough to keep you invested in the characters. Most importantly Iko Uwais is a fantastic athlete and both he and Yayan Ruhian's silat choreography is astonishing. It's not all kung fooey though, there are enough slower moments and nice bits of characterisation that enhance the action when it bursts forth. Highly recommended.

Little character and plot development really, but of course, this movie is all about the fight scenes. The fight scenes are very realistic and of course, brutally violent. I'm suprised this doesn't carry an 'R' rating.

The first few minutes into the movie did not quite set the theme of the movie. However, the movie contained brillant action scenes - the fight scene between special forces sergeant and "baddie 2i/c", and also the scene between the brothers and "baddies 2i/c" were impressively crafted. Enjoyed the movie as a whole, however the ending left watchers open as to whether there may be a continued part 2.

I’m mixed about this movie. The fighting is - I think - very good, but the acting lacks any depth at all. I think that’s because the script is thin as the actors just have nothing to work with. Good show but I want more than bang bang.

The best foreign action flick in a long time, non stop action, big death count by guns, knives & hand to hand combat. highly recommended. The minor use of subtitles should not put anyone off seeing this great flick.
