nice to see some good old fashon sci fi good looking flick
How could they have got this SO wrong?
Plot is all over the place. Character development is weak at best. And there's a few story moments that are just SO bad I was laughing out loud at them.
I love Alien, one of my fav films. Was hoping for a lot. Got little. Best forgotten really.
Good action but a weak plot with continuity problems and a lack of cohesion within the storyline. If you are a fan of Guy Pearce, don't get this movie for that reason because even though Guy's character is pivotal to the plot, he has less than 5 minutes screen time and is almost unrecognizable. Okay to watch if you don't have any expectations (being a Ridley Scott film) and the alternative is reruns of The Love Boat.
People need to stop going into movies with a world of expectations and strings attached. I went into this movie not realising it had anything to do with the Alien Quadrilogy. I thought the movie was fantastic.
Good movie and effects. I thought the script was good and interesting the whole way through. The only problem is linking this with the other movies. How does these white people, aliens and earth relate. Surely if the people in this movie went to this planet, the people who went there later in alien, would know about the ship etc. Also, this does not relate at all to the story in aliens v's predator.
How did the alien spaceship get there? Remember the alien ship in Alien? This is that story. Nothing else matters. You won't get any questions answered, but it will leave you asking questions. There is and ending which could see a sequel.......could it be a prequel to the predator movies?....but on the whole.....i recommend wayching it....better than i expected...escpecially after reading the negative comments below. (don't agree with most.)
Brilliant CGI spaceship flying to a brillantly CGI'd distant alien planet, but the plot soon shows its plot holes and weaknesses. A whole bunch of annoying scenes where characters don't bother updating other characters about what horrible thing just happened to them which might, you know, be important since they are all trying not to be bumped off one by one by some dangerous killing something outside their ship. The equivalent of those old horror movies where a bunch of people split up to explore a big old haunted house and get bumped off one by one. Why they implied it was a prequel to the Alien franchise just sullies the first and second brilliant Alien and Aliens movies.
If this hadn't been the LONG awaited sequel to the Alien quadrilogy then it would have been an OK movie. As it stands it's just a bit of a mess. Ridley Scott's first mistake was to hire Damon Lindelof (who wrote Lost) to pen the script. Lindelof has never been too interested in solving questions he throws up and in Prometheus it just becomes irritating. There are lots of questions in this movie and not one of them are answered by movie's end. Noomi Rapace is her usual excellent self but her cut glass accent screams of having just learned to speak English (she is Swedish after all) and it grates. I just think Ridley missed a great opportunity to tell the 'space jockey's' story. We didn't need a lesson on who created us. Watchable but only just.
Very clever sci fi thriller, a bit slow but twisted. Worth a watch if u like the genre
OK sci-fi but nothing special. Didn't have much of a story but still an OK watch if you are into the genre.
Pointless. Poor story, no character development, just a sci-fi horror.
Why do they feel the need to make a "prequel" they should have just left the Alien series alone, it answered none of the questions as to where the "Alien" came from in fact it led to more - ah I can see a sequel to the prequel coming on.
I am very disappointed with this.
Pretty good, but ending rubbish and blatant priming for a sequel. I loved the original Alien and it scared the stuffing out of me mainly because of the dark fuzzy images that let your imagination fill in the blanks. The special effects have come a long way, but the in your face graphics are no where near as scary as the original.
Would be nice to see the sequel tie back into the original movie, but not at the expense of tenuous story lines and in your face gore.
Ok if you are into alien movies but otherwise not recommended.
Hmmm .... a little disappointing, a little confusing, but well-made and intriguing. Made me want to find out more.
‘Promethus’ is a problem film for me. By that I mean I couldn’t rationalise some aspects. I think it’s curious that Guy Pearce played an old man; Pearce is a fine actor but why cast him in the role? I presumed, it being a sci-fi movie that he would ‘mutate’ to a younger age, which would justify his casting. Not so.
The opening sequence was ambiguous, perhaps deliberately so, posing questions as to its locale. My lack of connection to any of the characters, however, was 'its major shortcoming, the exception being Idris Elba who was most believable.
The movie is beautifully shot and the special effects are stunning. The story is not finished so expect to see a sequel.
I liked it and found myself lost in the SiFi story. If also is the prequel to "Alien" So there was a good after feeling time was not wasted.
Edge of the seat sci-fi thriller. The story line is not new - expeditionary force to strange planet being killed off one by one (always easy to pick the first ones to be slaughtered) but the title is the clue - sci-fi with a philosophical twist. Superb final scenes - you'll probably need to rewind to get the full impact.
Disappointing. Could someone explain the opening sequence?
Was Ok, a weak story line.
Totally overrated. Graphics good, but everything else ho-hum, storyline predictable and it was obviously trying to be in the class of the Alien series. Plot etc. But didn't make it and the references to the Alien series just made it worse. What a pity.
Too convoluted .Alien story stretched too thin. Far too long. Ridley is relying on past glory
Not on e of Ridley Scott's most interesting movies, the plot more or less the same formula. The evil emotionless robot was one of the better aspects. But the fact the head remaining is still fully functional means the rest of the body contained nothing of importance? Come on Ridley's believe it or not?
i thought this movie was going to be awesome, i wanted it to be, i tried to like it more. i found it sort of boring. not enough action or alien interaction. disappointing.
Great! Not perfect, but definitely worth watching. I didn't realise until I watched it that it is an Alien prequel.
This is a Ridley Scott movie, so if you watch it and I hope you do, and then it seems all to familiar, that is because it is an "Alien" clone right down to the female heroine. I found this movie to be a very pleasant surprise, it's an edge of your seat, nail biting action packed sci-fi thriller that has the story, acting, direction, and special effects to make this a top notch entertaining sci-fi film. There are several reviews on this site that you can sift through, but I'll just cut to the chase, this is an excellent movie well worth owning and watching. While there may be many unanswered questions with this movie, I'm hopeful that a sequel is in the offing.
This film mostly had no character depth (apart from the lead three, the rest being disposable extras), laughable horror scenes and a plot to yawn for ... did these scientists even realise they were on an Alien planet at all! or did they just forget to act like they were, and ignore basic survival common sense (like sticking your face 1m away from an Alien snake and thinking it was cute, omg a jump the shark scene to be sure) ... I really expected a lot more from Ridley Scott, good CGI rescued it and stopped me falling alseep
This is a tough one. It has all the technical expertise of a movie like "Battleship" or "John Carter", but the BIG difference is that this movie is trying to be something more, and on that count it fails badly. As a "prequel" to "Alien" it just doesn't work (the space jockey was an endearing mystery that should have stayed mysterious), and as a standalone sci-fi action flick it just doesn't make sense on so many levels that it gets aggravating after a while. I so much wanted to like this that disappointment is a large factor in my rating.
Well, I enjoyed it, but only gave it a 3 star due to the over-rating of the trailer and therefore expecting a much more thrilling movie....the special effects seem to keep getting better which I feel is what really captivated me and not the story, it seemed weak.
Holy smoke - bizzaree, watchable, good special effects, but story a bit weak
Started off really well but story line got lost and sadly it turned into an "alien" movie.
very disappointing.
How disappointing!! It was like a cross between Stargate & Star Trek without the familiar faces. I didn't see anything in this movie that I hadn't already seen on Stargate.
very good but watched it for the second time wasn't necessary
3 star movie, i haven't seen any of the alien movies, found it interesting with great acting and picturing...
If you were expecting a classic movie after watching the trailer - this wasn't it. Slow, lacking action at many points and "Alien" it is definately not. If you wern't expecting a great movie with plenty of action - then it probably had its good points, but you;d need to get over your disappointment first... Better the 2nd time.
I didn't like this movie at all, watched it for nothing, no real ending to it. Very dark and morbid.
That went in search of answers but found few, thats for the sequal.. Why did all the cave paintings over thousands of years direct them to a storage facility on an empty moon? We go on a journey for answers and find only questions. And why not use an actual Old Guy instead of a young guy in bad make-up. So many questions.
if you liked alien youll hate this all the hype for such a boring long drawnout movie
Expected this to be an epic but it wasn't. It was visually stunning but yawningly slow. Philosophy is okay in sci-fi but only if it's well balanced with action and suspense. This one is drearily philosophical. Go rent Alien again. Or even Avatar (cringe).
i waited (as i did for 'alien, predator, & alien vs. predator' franchise instalments) about 6 months to watch this extremely anticipated controversial title. It did not disappoint but i do not understand how it can be stated they are making room at the end for a sequel when this is a 'prequel'?? If this is prequel to 'alien' we have already seen the sequels (all 4 of them)????........... i mean, sure, there may be room for a sequel here, but it may not make much sense........ and be 'over-worked/marketed
No real effort from Ridley Scott on this one. Just writing to a formula and re-hashing old stuff.
Great premise but very poor execution. Could have been an epic film. I wanted it so much to be but Ridley Scott (Director) blew it. Other comments here are an accurate reflection of this movie experience. Very poor script. Poor casting with some of the crew. Great with others such as Michael Fassbender as David the Android. Plot with massive holes.
Very Alien like and you get it right in the end! It is a return to the source coming from Ridley Scott. Unfornately it is therefore unoriginal and like Cory, in a previous review, there are quite a lot of pathetic scenes and the end is perhaps the worst. 2 stars because I kept watching so there were quite enough to keep me interested.
It probably all makes sense to aficionados of science fiction, but to anyone else it's totally ridiculous. Some inventive scenes is about all the film has going for it.
I really enjoyed this movie, and had no idea about the so called link with Alien! Saw it in 3D which made the effects so much better! Can't wait to see it again on DVD!
A handful of cave paintings lead a scientific crew to a distant moon in A handful of cave paintings lead a scientific crew to a distant moon in search of the Engineers- aliens believed to have changed the way life evolved on Earth- and to seek answers. There, they find that it's not as rosy or inviting as they hoped for.
Scientists, that didn't actually seem to know their area of science (A Geologist not interested in an ENTIRE WORLD of new geology?, a biologist that wasn't interested in biology, archaeologist knowing biology, ECT.), a lot of stupid moves on the part of trained crew flying the ship such as landing directly in front of an unknown object on the ground without scoping the area out, people running from a rolling ship that's only 12 metres wide but a mile long and could be easily avoided if they ran sideways...
Basically, a whole bunch of huge mistakes and a movie that promises intelligence but never delivers.
It has the usual alien stuff though- Big bad aliens, good humans, mouth rape by face huggers, Easter eggs in the background, some gory scenes, but the actual reason for the crew going there, the big plot driver, the very reason for the movie- the Engineers- is left for a sequel.
Just another 'All aliens are bad guys, action scenes, violence scenes and slime galore' movie. Which is great. But, unlike how it was advertised, don't rush there expecting a high IQ movie that'll make you think. It will make you think, sure, but mostly trying to work out what the you just saw.
A scientific mission to a distant planet seeks answers to the origin of life on earth. I wanted to like this film more than I did. Compared to Alien it is full of ideas and has a mystery at its core. But unfortunately it lacks tension and is a little dull and plodding. When the mandatory big special effects scene happens at the end it is quite predictable and unexciting. Disappointing but worth a look. 3.5 stars
