France 1562. Under the reign of Charles IX, war is raging between Catholics and Protestants. The beautiful young Marie de Mézières, heiress to one of the kingdom's greatest fortunes, pines for the Duc de Guise—known as Le Balafré, or "Scarface". But in an effort to cement their position at court, her father, the Marquis de Mézières, gives Marie in marriage to a man she has never met, the Prince de Montpensier. All of France is a bloody battlefield, and the Prince is summoned to join Charles’ War against the Protestants, so he must send his young bride to the safety of one of his most secluded castles, Champigny. There, his friend and former tutor, the Comte de Chabannes, is charged to complete the Princess' education so that she can take her place at court once the war is ended. But soon after Montpensier joins Marie, fate and the changing course of the war lead both Guise and the Duc d'Anjou—the future Henri III—to Champigny. In turn, Anjou falls in love with the Princess, to whose charms Chabannes has also succumbed. Immediately, a violent, passionate rivalry develops between these four men—with Marie as the prize.

I love both french movies and period movies, so combined together I should have loved this but this was boring. I've also read the book and in this case, the book is better.

A winner at Cannes this movie reminds of a Shakespeare drama. It is complex with twists and turns in the plot that can mean rewatching a scene (not helped by poorly authored subtitles). But stay with it: a very satisfying movie with some top French actors including the upcoming Gregorie Leprince-Ringuet.

I forced myself to finish this even as I can see the end coming way ahead. The central theme is the rivalry, but the princess, as the beauty wasn't convincing to have caused such rivalry. The war and historical tidbits were served as a bland side dish. And overall I did not care for the dialogue at all, more often disconnected and delivered staccato. But the quality of the dialogue itself might have been influenced by the translation or subtitle, I can't say for sure. However, as I can pick up a few French words which gave me enough sense of what's going on, the dialogue was quite subpar...

Annoying that people are rating their unwillingness to read subtitles and not the film...

This French film was absolutly great, so much for the costumes, the actors, and in particular the dialogue and the decors. This film remind me of the film the "Princesse de Cleves" I wish to see more of french historical movies . I will rate this film . not 3 but 4 or 5 stars
