FANTASTIC! Deffs worth a watch
Great movie, although it came out around the same time as the illusionist it is quite different. I'm a big fan of Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan and wasn't disappointed at all,
One of those rare gems, pure entertainment from start to finish. And David Bowie is superb in his role as Nicola Tesla.
Bale and Jackman are BRILLIANT. I was rooting for Jackman, mainly because I am not a huge fan of the Bale Brand of Brooding Intensity, The movie was beautiful, and also a typical Nolan Affair which leaves you questioning whats real at the end (Like inception). Very Unique too, well worth repeat viewings
Captivating movie with superb twists. Both Jackman and Bale put in excellent performances. This movie plus his other great film, Inception - proves that Christopher Nolan is not just one hit wonder director with the Batman franchise but is able to branch out to other themes and stories with creative and fresh direction.
The Prestige was ok. I usually enjoy Hugh Jackmans movies however this wasn't one of his better movies.
Did not really enjoy the movie.
Dull predictable 'boy’s-own' story of stage magicians with Michael Caine in his usual patronising role.
Great film which has a good twist to it.
The prestige is a little bit confusing and moves to quickly. I found it pretty sad as both magicians are as evil as each other and maybe thats what the author was trying to portay that magic is an evil practise either way I found it hard to follow and watch.
What the Prestige gets right that The Illusionist got so wrong is, it doesn't over-egg the pudding. It let's you see the technology behind the tricks so that, even when presented by something impossible, it feels real. What this meant for me was that I could concentrate on the characters and story, and not be distracted by things that didn't appear to make sense.
It's very simply a story about obsession, and the lengths some people will go to. It also pulls off the trick of having main characters who aren't terribly likeable but are intriguing enough to make you want to see what they'll do next.
I LOVED IT! everything was smart and well thought making you really think and enjoy the movie, some parts keep you on the end of your seat, the only thing was the going back and forth beteen before after and during was very confusing
I enjoyed this movie greatly, from start to finish. The twists and tricks are very clever, the layers of illusion were well crafted, and even after I worked out the secret it managed to shock me. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes to think about what they're watching and for anyone who appreciates the wonder a good illusion can bring.
Great movie, lots of suspense and surprises.
This movie I loved !It's a bit "dark" in places, however, if you cast aside any concept of magicians and their "art" of magic, which I am not a traditional fan of magic anyhow, this movie is excellent. It has very clever and compelling performances of Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Piper Perabo and even David Bowie as Nikola Tesla . The strict usage of period costumes and clever scenery sets for that "era" make this movie a really very clever story, with more than one twist which will keep you thinking all the way through the entire enjoyment and it's about what actually DID happen for days after ! It was very popular when it was released and I can remember all my friends and colleagues raving about it. It truly deserves a special place along with "story telling movies' other masters, Casablanca, King Kong, Titanic and Avatar and of course Australia, the Movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman ( hottie )
I loved this movie. At first I thought that Hugh had been killed and thought near the end I knew how it would end but it was a quite an interesting twist right at the end Loved it
one of the best movies with so many twists and turns, one I will have to watch again, keeps you interested right to the end
A very clever but rather sinister story. This movie definitely makes you think and requires some concentration but it certainly is worth it!
I turned it off before the end I was so bored. A great cast should have produced a better movie, it's almost as if they too were bored. Weak, predictable and a waste of time.
Highly unusual and a few twists to this one. Michael Caine was terrific
This is an amazing movie! The twists and turns and illusion (or prestige I should say) is captivating. Watch if you like movies like "the illusionist" thumbs up!!
The prestige is a very hard movie to get like I didn't get it
Fantastic. Brilliant acting and plot.
We really enjoyed this one full of mystery and illusions. It gave a different perspective on being a magician and the risks that are involved with the art.
A little bit slow compared to what I normally watch but enjoyed it nonetheless. Great twist.
Excellent magical illusions were performed in this movie, left me wonderng about the illusions set in place.
Has a twist in the end. Recommend watching
Evenually got around to watching this movie
and thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent cast and
entertaining story which with good twists along the way. Highly reccomend it.
Fantastic flick, if you watch it carefully. It does throw you with back and forth with past and present during film, but otherwise entertaining!
Not fussed on this movie, found it draged on a bit. Story line was a bit flakey also.
The elements of a magician's craft: the Pledge, the Turn and the Prestige. The audience knows it is being fooled, but for the greatest magicians this deception will rule their lives. This is a beautiful looking film with fabulous Victorian-era sets, costumes and contraptions. The magic tricks are dazzling and their secrets are not revealed until the final act.
Nikola Tesla (played by David Bowie) fascinated me and it is well worth reading more about this Serbian genius. Tesla's life would be great source material for a film.
Excellent. Have a look at this one.
I really enjoyed this because of all the twists... you need to be on the ball watching it. Good mind games
This movie is deliberately light mutedly. It also seems confusing. The director explains that the movie is actually a magic trick all on its own. He makes a comment that after seeing it, you need to see it again, to see how all the elements lead to the exposition, and how the structure of the movie is part of another magic trick.
The actors are good, but it is the sum of the acting, the plot, the story and the production that makes the movie.
You must persevere to the end, and see how it all hangs together, how the climax of the movie revealed at the beginning is not the real climax. It deserves its highest rating from me.
a most intriguing film. Michael Caine played a great part and did not disappoint.
Hmmm very good .... one of best movies seen this year so far!
Great acting combined with a good script and very interesting plot ... it's the plot plus Victorian settings that really make the movie.
The plot is complex and you really need to pay attention to work it out ... keeps you hanging on to the very last scene ... but YES all is tied together plus final scene has all your suspicions clarified.
Great sleeper ... well worth watching.
So many twists and turns. What great acting roles for both Jackman and Bale. They are masters in this movie. Quite a dark movie but kept me entralled right throughout. Excellent and highly recommended. A must see.
great movie, full of twists and turns and surprises. Great acting, great story line. Complicated and thrilling.
Terrible movie - way too many complicated
This is a movie you can't afford to lose concentration. It is good - has a lot of twists and turns.
The ending certainly was unexpected. Was a bit slow at the start but got better
Get The Illusionist instead. By far the better choice !!!!
One of only 2 movies I have returned after not being able to watch it more than half and hour. Should have been good with the calibre of actors but it was boring!!!
Great movie, loved both Bale and Jackman. Would recommend it.
This is one of my faves. Christopher Nolan (of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight fame) uses a heavy dollop of deception and intrigue to keep you guessing in this film.
A hint for watching: don't trust what you have figured out. This movies s as secretive as an illusionist is with the execution of their tricks.
I found it slow to start and too many dark scenes - not much light... The actors were good, the plot confusing.
Definitely a cut above the average. A well thickened plot means you really need to be awake for this one as it turns on itself a number of time but there are rewards for paying attention. Hugh Jackman is very believable and Christian Bale's usual woody delivery suits his character well. Probably just pips "The Illusionist" in the battle of the magician movies.
This is an awsome movie
one of the best movies i have seeen
flow is good
keeps you glued all the time
At times very impressive, but at others kind of lame. You guess much of the stuff pretty early. And it's almost impossible to like any of the characters except Michael Caine.
Pay close attention to this movie - many twists and turns, and flash-backs - easy to lose track if you let your attention wander. Good, great FX.
Dark and intense, this film was enjoyable for strong performances from Jackman, Bale and Caine. The many twists were dizzying at times but kept us enthralled to the end.
Confusing at first, but thrilling once you get into it. Excellent performances from Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson
Great acting and interesting story. Plenty of action and some great magic effects. Has a great twist that I could see coming.
I always try and read the critic's reviews before making my selections so embarked on this movie with high expectations, as all the reviews rated it very highly. Disappointingly, it was a major disaster in my opinion. Totally confusing from start to finish (clearly I am not as clever as either the director or all the positive review writers) I simply became more and more frustrated until I really didn't give a damn about the ending and was just glad it was over. Christian Bale's character had a twin? Give me a break!! As for David Bowie as Nicola Tesla, he should stick to bad singing and avoid inflicting his wooden acting on audiences who deserve more for their time and money.
this movie is awesome, great actors and story , loved the twists
a very detailed, intriguing movie. I didn't understand the key "twist" at the end at first - it was truly unexpected and a friend had to explain it to me!! Once I understood what had happened it was a real "OMG" moment. You have to watch
wow a great movie, quite entertaining probably one of the best movies i've seen in this genre. acting was brilliant and the twist was very unexpected
I quite enjoyed the movie. a bit complicated at some parts, but worth watching for sure.
Fine performances from Caine, Bale and Jackman. A well made and enjoyable film with an unexpected ending.
Great movie. Lots of twists and turns. Not what I expected, but loved it all the same.
This movie was great, it has everything going for it. Good cast, intrigue, secrets, magic, suspicion, love, distrust, family, fight for honour and 'prestige' and a killer ending.
Fantastic movie! The end was unforgettable
Thought it was pretty good until the end then it lost me completely, don't think I can stand to watch it all again to try & work it out. The only good accent was Michael Caine's!
This movie had me at the edge of my seat until the distrubing end, a must watch!
What a very interesting and intriguing movie.....right down to the very end - and what an end.
A different film.A constant challenge to the viewer no to miss anything visuallly. And the twists and turns are confounding. A good intense mystery.
Brian says: Superb recreation of the era, and wonderful character acting. The brooding , then staccato music was a great accompaniment to the special effects.
This movie was intriguing and entertaining with many plot convolutions to keep the viewer interested. Very good performances by all the main actors.
Took a few attempts at watching this the whole way through but got there eventually. Didn't like the retrospective flashback fast forward type story as it was really hard to keep up the interest level.
Great movie, very entertaining
great movie with Hugh and Christian competing against each other. What great lengths they went to be the top one.
Great actors and acting, intricate plot, imaginative, accurate period setting in UK
plotting a bit complex and flash-backy, but still a good film. tense and foreboding.
Great movie have seen it before and thoroughly enjoyed it a second time, its one of those movies that has a twist of a twist, keeps you thinking
Events out of chronological order seem to appeal to authors and scriptwriters as they can show off how clever they are. To this viewer, however, it usually just gets confusing. Especially here when you have flashbacks within flashbacks. In the end it almost made sense, except for a few things that still left me completely confused. And why can’t we have London actors playing Londoners? Do we really need lots of Americans – and an Australian – who can never quite hide their real accents? For all that, it’s an enjoyable and worthwhile movie.
Just OK if you really like Hugh Jackman
Great film , excellent premise . Bale and Jackman were fantastic and Michael Caine just keeps getting better . A wonderful story and the addition of David Bowie as Tesla just adds a touch of the bizarre all up this is a sterling effort from Chris Nolan
One for the Sci Fi fans (and thats me) plot is good and twist at end is great - all performances good - I liked it.
Thrilling movie, had me guessing until the end. Hugh Jackman & Christian Bale were great adversaries. Set design was a delight to explore.
Wasn't really my cup of tea.
My husband and I enjoyed this movie, the acting was very good as was the story.
This movie is very good. well acted, beautifully shot and fast moving. The end did not caome as the surprise it should have, but it was fun to see it roll out anyway.
A great film. Very well written and directed.
Awesome ! Lots of twists - highly enjoyable all the way through.
An interesting enough movie, even if I found the denouement a touch far fetched.
However, it was well enough written and acted, even though I had trouble with the darkness of the cinematography.
Felt like a "Hollywood" version of "The Illusionist" (which is a far superior film). The mix of magic trickery with sci-fi just doesn't work well, and in the end leaves you feeling ripped off. Still, Jackman is great, and the pacing is sharp.
Great Movie - Lots of Twists & Turns!
Excellent. Bit hard to follow at first but pulls you in and keeps you guessing until the end.
Excellent movie, great plots and intertwining of sub plots and it is well acted. Recommend this one.
this was a good movie with twists and a great story line. A must see movie for the suspense movie buffs.
Absorbing story of obession between two careers in magic. The acting is great with Michael Caine's supporting part greatly adding to the believability. Right until the end, there is no accent on the Sci-Fi basis and so it seems an historical story setting. The twist is VERY unexpected and though elements might be guessed earlier, the full details blow you away. Huge enjoyment in a thoughtful movie.
Much better than I expected. Christopher Bale is very menancing and we were gripped right to the end. Great tale of obsession and how it twists your perspective.
Ending a little confusing otherwise an enjoyable movie.
It was okay probably will not watch it again.
much better than I thought it would be.
Personally I thought this movie started off strong but as it progressed I was left questioning the expectations I had in regards to the direction of the plot, the secrets to how tricks were executed, etc. I found it amusing and confusing. However, it was very enjoyable for a movie enthusiast such as myself. It really left me wanting to know. It can get quite dragging at times (eg. the main characters and their 'plotting against each other' scenes). My whole family watched it and by the middle the women in the family had already given up on the film.
I thought the suspence was great, however I expected a little more excitement knowing Hugh jackman was in it. I was a little disapointed.
Very slow start, but worth hanging out to the end.
That Tesla machine that one magician was using is indeed dangerous and when used outside of a Faraday cage has the potential of striking anyone in the vicinity. The sparks / lightening that it produced would indeed hurt you, and with the power it was generating would definately kill you. Note to any potential jackasses out there, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME or you will be roast meat. It did make for a good magic trick on screen though... I did learn that there is 3 parts to a magic act a) The Pledge, b) The Turn, c) The Prestige.
Loved it! Don't miss this one. One of those movies you want to watch again because there is so much there.
Just incredible. There is only one other film I know of that tops 'The Prestige' in terms of intricacy, character development, superb acting and a plot to take your breath away, and that is 'The Shawshank Redemption.' Bale, Caine and Jackman are filmed at their most genius here. This is an absolute must-see; 'The Prestige' offers up morsel after delicious morsel of a mindblowing tale that will leave no discerning viewer unsatisfied.
Quite good this one, once friends funny how over time they become enemies.
Outstanding plot, script and acting. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are masterful in presenting chararcters that are both compelling and repugnant. Engaging movie that goes to places unexpected.
Expected a lot more given the cast. The story just never took off for me. Good twist at the end but never kept me engrossed.
What a brilliant movie. Could watch this one over and over again. Saw this on the big screen and was just as good the second time around. A must see movie for the suspense movie buffs.
Intriguing and full of suspense
Whatever it is that other people see in this movie is completely lost on me. I found the story boring and unnecessarily complicated and the acting was less than stellar. Christian Bale as a cockney was simply not credible and while Jackman and Caine were slightly better their performances were nothing to write home about. Then again it would be hard to put in a great performance with such wooden dialogue and unlikeable characters. Save your time and watch something else instead.
A lot like The Illusionist (maybe not as good), great twist but seemed to take a long time to get there
EXCELLENT. Well worth watching. Lots of twists and turns and good acting. A nice surprise!
Disappointing. Thought it had all the right ingredients to make a good movie but didn't appeal.
really enjoyable period supernatural thriller
Worth watching....So, is that what they do with the birds in magic tricks!!
Worth watching , good story
Keeps your interest all the way through.
Great acting and photography. However, I found the story complex and hard to follow, particularly as there were at least two sets of people masquerading as others.
I give it three stars
This movie held my interest throughout the entire movie with a few surprises thrown in
Excellent story and full of twists upon twists in plot and sub-plot
brilliant movie twists and turns make this an excellent story that has you hanging right till the end
Excellent movie, was a pleasant surprise. Found myself totally engrossed and would recommend everyone see this movie. Great cast.
After a slow start this movie picked up and proved worth the watch. Great acting, really good story line and excellent ending.
very complicated film which i had to watch twice to make sure i didn't miss anything maybe would have been better to watch had it been just a straight out story instead of jumping from the present to the past as this only adds to more confusion. the plot as a whole was magic and the old adage "the hand is quicker than the eye" is true to fact.
Good storyline, keep you on the edge of the seat until the end.
Very good, keeps you on the edge of the
seat all way through, a written script.
Hugh Jackman was superb in his character
and so was Christian Bale.
Great acting, lots of twists and turns. This one will have you guessing, and don't forget to spot David Bowie in it!
Very good. Quite gripping.
Intreging plot, interesting to learn about some of these common illusionist presentations, and how they can do it.
Easily one of the best movies of 2006, this is some of the most solid story-telling and acting I've seen in a long time.
A bit hard to follow at times but interesting and entertaining story
Great movie. Kept us guessing until end. Even then we wanted to see it again straight away.
Not too bad. Had an interesting ending.. Worth having a look at.
Best movie I've seen this year. Worth watching a couple of times to pick up anything you missed. Christian Bale is excellent!
Fantastic Movie - Great style and set design, good twist to the plot, very enjoyable and worth watching twice!
Fantastic movie. Kept me gripped to the very end - and what an ending!!
Good story line, great acting, and a nice twist at the end.
Christopher Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson form a great cast in this fight for the ultimate showman in the magic world. Two magician assistant, Hugh & Christopher, embark on a deadly competition against each other after the untimely death of Hugh's characters wife. The twist at the end is very clever.
It will be intersting to watvh 'The Illusionist" to see how this compares. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are fine in the lead roles, and David Bowie fills a solid cameo. It lost me a bit when the "magic" become more about special effects and teleportation...
I found it somewhat confusing and it had no "inner appeal".
Acting is fantastic and overall a good movie. Feels very dark at times, but difficult not to be with the subject matter at hand. Worth seeing.
Complex magic keeps you interested, even if somewhat complicated
what a great movie. original script and great acting. keeps you in suspense right to the credits.
I really enjoyed this movie. Love Hugh Jackman!
Very Tricky. Not the type of movie you could nod off in and catch up. Enjoyed.
this was fantastic great cast , great twist in the plot went fast kept you intrigued until the end
Really enjoyed, held interest, well acted.
Keeps the audience constantly on the edge of their seat. A great performance by Hugh Jackman, not too accurate Historical representation of Tesla, but fun nonetheless.
Very different and very much enjoyed. Great movie showing how vindictive and angry people can get in the presence of a magic based theme.
Slow to start but grips you and you can't stop trying to figure it out right to the end. Most engrossing and easy to look at.
"The Prestige" was a totally fascinating film. Using the three acts of a magic trick, the pledge, the turn and the prestige, it drew the viewer into a plot containing twists, misdirection, and more twists. There were just enough clues so that when the ultimate trick was revealed, one could go over it in your mind and see how the denouement was revealed very early on. The only element that demanded more than usual suspension of disbelief was Tesla's machine. The cast was superb especially Hugh jackman and Michael Caine.
Weird but wonderful movie. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are great, as always, with a great supporting cast including Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie (love him!). This dark and twisting mystery is full of rich detail - you don't want to miss a thing! Enjoy!
brilliant film was kept enthralled till the very end. More films like this should be made instead of violence and drugs
An intriguing exercise in misdirection. Wonderfully atmospheric.
Great movie, settings the twist the script. Jackmans performance makes you proud to be Australian and was good to see Micheal Cain do a good movie its a been a while
good acting from Christian Bale and Michael Caine...David Bowie as Tesla the great inventor.Hugh Jackman only adequate. Scarlette beautiful in a skimpy costume!Plot too obvious
A very interesting movie, you have to keep watching it and then you will need to watch it again to pick up on the clues!
Someone told me the twist before the movie. It ruined it for me! Nevertheless, it was a good watch, kept my wife intrigued the whole 2 hours.
A very different kind of story that was interesting and enjoyable to watch - but not great, despite the heavy weight cast, who all played their roles with professionalism.
Took some time to get into but held you til the end. A definite departure for our Hugh.
Wasn't too keen on the ending and Christian Bales' character while well acted was just plain irritating. Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine were great as usual, David Bowie is a better actor than he is a singer... of course that's not saying much and Scarlet Johannson is way too overrated. Good twist at the end though. Don't you hate it when you don't see it coming but love it all the same?
One of the better films of 2006. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are excellent. This movie keeps you guessing on who is good or bad.
A very enjoyable movie that held my interest from start to the unexpected ending. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to watch some great actors take this film a cut above most that are currently out at the moment.
Excellent way to spend a couple of hours. I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. It has a great story, great acting and an unforgettable ending.
