Set in 1977 in a French provincial town, Potiche is a free adaptation of the 1970s eponymous French hit comic play. Deneuve is Suzanne, a submissive, housebound trophy housewife (or potiche) who steps in to manage her wealthy husband's umbrella factory after the workers go on strike and take him hostage. To everyone’s surprise, she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. But when her husband returns from a restful cruise in top form, things get complicated. Depardieu plays a union leader and Suzanne's former beau who still holds a flame for her. Acclaimed writer-director Francois Ozon (8 Women) twists the original on its head to create his own satirical take on the war between the sexes and classes.

Nice light movie. And if you are used to watching movies not in English, the subtitles are just fine.

Catherine Deneuve glides through the story (fable? fairy tale?) in a stately manner. Not exactly realistic, but very entertaining and stylish.

This is a cute charming little mignette about a French trophy wife who rises to the challenge when her husband becomes ill and takes over a multinational firm. Her relationships with her husband, children and her husband's mistress are all tested in this adorable film set in France in the 1970's. It isn't fantastic, and it isn't terrible. It's just a simple cute little film with a great cast of Deneuve and Depardieu.

Enjoyable movie with a realistic mood of the 1970s. Only problem was that the subtitles were often hard to read and too fast which meant I spent most of my time reading the screen rather than looking at the wonderful characters.

The acting and dialogues look/sound so wrong. Was boring ... The slow pace was a killer making the 1 hour 40 minutes to look like 4 hours!

A great movie, I love the way it painted the 70's in France, with the Libertinage and freedom of the time. Not a politically correct movie for american.

It was a pity that we were not advised about English subtitles whenm choosing this movie. The sub titles are hard to read and do not stay on the screen long enough to read and absorb. They are in a white small script which does not show up well against the movie. A good movie was spoilt by this as we could not watch or even enjoy this through to the end.

I thought it was fabulous. The European films are far superior to the American films. Quirky and funny and you find out that the main character is not a push over and all is revealed by the end of the film.

Feminism for beginners. Very interesting twists and turns, I would watch it again. Big name stars who deserve the spotlight.

Enjoyed watching the two stars, who seem very comfortable working together. Very watchable film but not much substance from co stars.

French films are just awesome! The end is usually how you don`t expect it and the actors look normal and not artificial. Loved it!
