In a small town by the sea lives five year-old Sosuke, high on a cliff overlooking the Inland Sea. One morning while playing on the rocky beach below his house, he discovers a goldfish named Ponyo, her head stuck in a jam jar. Sosuke rescues Ponyo and keeps her in a green plastic pail. Both Ponyo and Sosuke are fascinated by each other and promise to stay firm friends until Ponyo's father - once human, now a sorcerer who lives deep under the sea - forces her to return with him to the ocean depths. What follows is an amazing underwater adventure for all ages!

Kids loved this one, and it is a real immersion for the imagination. The only thing I would say is that there was some artistic license used to wrap up the story.

One of Miyazaki's weaker offerings, with the same tired theme of nature's harmony in question and a storyline that feels rambling and incomplete.

Wonderful piece of animated work, maybe not as splendid as Spirited Away, but fairly close. A memorable tale with brilliant characters, and colorful backgrounds! Definitely a joy to watch, perfect for the family.

Kids flick, but still enjoyable. I'm not a fan of Studio Gibli films, while my partner is. But I have to admit this film was cute.

No surprises that I start this review by complimenting the beautiful artwork in Ponyo. The sea life and environments look really nice. The story does lack great depth, but makes up for it by being a little different and quirky. The voice acting (in the English version) was solid for the most part - the kids were average, but Tina Fey and Liam Neeson really stood out. Certainly enjoyable for adults and kids alike. If you're a fan of Miyazaki's previous works, it'd be hard not to like this one as well.

Another enjoyable Studio Ghibli animation about a child befriending an odd creature who represents the natural order which is invariably out of balance. 3.5

Charming, OK in its way, but too similar to other stories of the same ilk. The English subtitles bear little relationship to the cutesy Yank voice-over

This is an example of when Disney sometimes makes something crap. Nowhere near as good as Ghbli's previous accomplishments. Check out ANY of their other movies before you see this one. Weak characters and execution. So disappointing!

Amazing to look at -- all the colors -- and as trippy as ever, in true Miyazaki style. But the story lacks the depth or resonance of other Studio Ghibli fare -- perhaps things are over-simplified for a slightly younger set? Possibly just a little too cute......

Ponyo is the best Hayao Miyazaki movie I've seen and that is a huge feat as all Miyazaki's movies are incredible stories with so much heart with valuable lessons in the plots. Miyazaki has a gift of capturing the beauty in the world and making kids see the beauty in the most unlikely places. Highly recommended, once you see it you will want to hunt down all his other movies.

As always with Miyazaki, lovely stuff. As already commented on in other reviews, it is more for kids than some of his other works, but that didn't interfere with my thorough involvement in the film (seen it twice now on the big screen). As with Spirited Away, Miyazaki manages to slip in a message about humans rubbishing their world without sermonising or interrupting the narrative. The art is wonderful, contrasting the smooth shiny look of the water scenes with an almost pastel and watercolour look of Sosuke's house and surrounds. Good narrative supported by Miyazaki's usual brilliant creation of the world of the story. The scene with the fish/waves following the car is truly memorable. I wish Hayao Miyazaki and studio Ghibli had been around when I was a kid.

If you like other studio Ghibli animations you will like this. I do think Ponyo is aimed more at kids than the other animations but that doesn't mean adults won't enjoy this. I really enjoyed it. The DVD has both English and Japanese voice for those that what to know. Recommended with 4 stars from me.
