Police Academy salutes the men, women and borderline cases who protect the public from people very much like themselves. A comic success story for over a decade, it begat six sequels and both animated and live-action TV series. New recruits include sound-effects wiz Larvelle Jones (Michael Winslow), florist Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), shy Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and gun buff Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf). Instructors Harris (G.W. Bailey) and Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook) aim to wash these turkeys out before they graduate. As directed by Hugh Wilson (The First Wives Club), they and stars Steve Guttenberg and Kim Cattrall make some police farce.

I remember when this was an incredibly popular movie at the picture theaters. The showings were always full, and the crowds went hysterical at every joke. This was back in the days when the audience use to clap their appreciation at the end of every movie, and the screen had a giant curtain in front of it that was drawn open to begin your viewing with a series of disney cartoons prior the the main feature. Special effects were sound-effects that the characters use to make for comic reasons. Ahh, if only I could spend $3 to go out to the movies again! The movie itself is a big puddle of weak jokes mixed with a bit of slapstick. Get it if you are a nostalgia junky, and slap it on your flat screen TV and watch it between viewing 'The Biggest Loser' and 'Who wants to Be A Super Model?'. Turn your brain into a big mushy blob!
