On the eve of his retirement, Nevada homicide detective Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson) is drawn into the most horrifying crime of his life - the battered body of a little girl has been found and it has all the markings of a serial killer. Black is the one chosen to tell the little girl's family of her tragic fate. He promises the distraught parents that he will find the killer no matter how long it takes and whatever the toll. THIS PLEDGE WILL CHANGE HIS LIFE FOREVER.
To the rest of the force, a suspect has been found and he has confessed before taking his own life. The case is officially closed. End of story. But instinct tells Black that the killings have not ended. Driven to seek the truth, Black will also be driven to the point of obsession.
Where does duty end and obsession begin? And what price will this pledge exact on Black and all those around him?
Harrowing, gripping and deeply moving, THE PLEDGE is no ordinary psychological thriller, it explores terrain other thrillers fear to tread. And it will make you witness what you dare not see.
Teaming for the second time with Jack Nicholson since the critically acclaimed 'The Crossing Guard', director Sean Penn has assembled a superb ensemble cast (Benicio Del Toro, Aaron Eckhart, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Vanessa Redgrave and Sam Shepard) to create one of the most strikingly original and emotionally powerful thrillers of our time.

This is excellent movie. There was nothing predictable about it. I loved the way Sean Penn finished the movie, totally unexpected, even if it was a little unsettling. A must see, in my humble opinion.

This film has a very tight storyline with a plot that you can read (at least) two ways: ex-cop going mad, finding it hard to retire, thinks he's catching a pedophile killer but is he actually grooming the child he finds he has become attached to? or ex-cop makes a pledge to find a little girls killer and being from the school of old fashioned honour, intends to see his job through, even at the cost of his new found happiness and state of mind. This film has an all star cast with experience that spans decades (eg. Jack Nicholson, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn). It's good raw acting and makeup is used to make the characters more real rather than glamorous. Sean Penn's directing is spot on and he knows how to tell a good story. I'm still thinking about "The Pledge". Must see.

Superb movie. Brilliant acting, directing, writing and cinematography. Jack Nicholson is not playing himself for a change and does a brilliant job. The unravelling of his character is engrossing to watch. Benicio Del Tero has a small but interesting role.

This movie is actually quite good but so slow. A stellar performance by Jack Nicholson is really what holds this film together although the story line and plot is clever. Seeming to go nowhere for most of the time, I found myself compelled to watch it all and found I quite enjoyed it.
