Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.. Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humor to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film.

I didn't see this movie when it originally came out and have not watched any of the showings on TV either.
I decided upon recommendation from a friend to watch this movie and I'm glad I did. Johnny Depp plays a delightful swaggering Pirate called Jack Sparrow.
This is a very funny film full of suspense, intrigue and oh yes, you've got it love of a fair lady.
All the great clichés of Pirates and vagabonds are there along with the daintiness and honour of landed gentry.
Orlando Bloom for his part as William Turner creates more twists and turns in the plot, upon Jack Sparrow and the Governor and of course beautiful Keira Knightly's character Elizabeth Swift - the Govenor's Daughter.
Mind you Elizabeth Swift herself is of independent Ladies mind.
I think too, if life as a Pirate was like Jack Sparrows - a Pirates Life for me would be - sadly, I know this not to be true.

Corny humour laid on with a trowel, swashbuckling action and ghouls. This movie will appeal to younger teens and to women who like their anti-hero to wear eyeliner and high heels. Amusing attempts by the cast to talk like a pirate (Depp wimps out with london-cockney).

This is a classic Walt Disney kind of film of the 1950s, 60s,70s with 21st century amazing computerised special effects.Keira Knightly is like the typical girl next door of the 1970s in period costume - which she can't breathe in! What can be said? Suberb casting and a better than most script come together in bring the most fun in ages. Depp, of course, is the centre piece of this fun but Rush doesn't quake in the role either. Fun references to the theme park ride make this movie a gift for the eyes as well. Never has Hollywood made such a well done combination.

Johnny Depp's performance stood out as Capt'n Jack Sparrow (the most likeable pirate in the Carribbean although he wouldn't like to hear it!) Orlando Bloom as Will Turner was another great performance. Sword fighting scenes stood out for the great choreography. A longish movie, but not at all hard to sit through! Sat through this movie twice in one weekend!
