Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides captures the fun, adventure and humour that ignited the hit franchise as Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he's not sure if it's love - or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides feels a little bit like Captain Jack Sparrow fan fiction, although if it really were fan fiction I suspect we’d see a lot more of star Johnny Depp shirtless; bedding fair maidens on land and at sea. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides feels a little bit like Captain Jack Sparrow fan fiction, although if it really were fan fiction I suspect we’d see a lot more of star Johnny Depp shirtless; bedding fair maidens on land and at sea. The character has been unshackled from the burdens of the original Pirates trilogy, specifically Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and a plot that became so horrendously incomprehensible it seemed as if the screenplays were being written exclusively under the influence of rum. This latest instalment – complete with new captain Rob Marshall replacing Gore Verbinski at the helm – refocuses its attention on that which made The Curse of the Black Pearl such a surprise hit in the first place: Johnny Depp’s endlessly charismatic lead performance (this is the most screen time he’s had in any Pirates film), and a number of thrilling action sequences. Captain Jack may not be as fresh as he used to be, and the franchise as a whole is a little worse for wear, On Stranger Tides is the best attempt to recapture the spirit of the first flick we’ve seen yet.

Now, I’m not sure if On Stranger Tides takes place before or after the previous films. Perhaps, like the best fanfic, it’s non-canonical. This implies we could one day see a Captain Jack vs. Indiana Jones mashup – get writing Hollywood! It opens in London (which makes sense because Jack has always seemed like the Camden sort), with a Jack Sparrow-impersonator recruiting seamen for a voyage to the Fountain of Youth. When the real Jack Sparrow gets word of this deception, he’s intent on putting the copycat in his place. After much double-talk and evasion of royal guards, he discovers the impersonator is actually a ‘she’, and not just any she; Angelica (Penelope Cruz), a former nun-in-waiting corrupted by Jackie boy once upon a time. Sparrow winds up on Angelica’s ship – run by her father, the vicious Blackbeard (Ian McShane) – and is forced to go on a quest for eternal life. Sigh, a pirate’s life for he.

Series' screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio have adapted On Stranger Tides from Tim Powers’ 1987 book of the same name (although in the credits, the film is said to be “suggested by” the novel, which is a new one). Jack and co. have been crowbarred into Powers' tale, and it mostly works. Of course, don’t let that seemingly straightforward source fool you; being a Pirates of the Caribbean film, the plot has to be convoluted. I’ve not even mentioned yet the reappearance of Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), the undead pirate who is now working as a privateer for England (it's nice to see they don’t have discriminatory hiring policies). Also complicating matters for Captain Jack is a fleet of Spaniards equally hell-bent on finding the Fountain before Blackbeard, and a bunch of sexy/terrifying mermaids that threaten to wipe out our heroes in the film’s most heart-stopping action set-piece.

Marshall is no Verbinski (a truly underrated action director who fell victim to script and shooting issues on Pirates 2 and 3), but he does his best to step into his shoes and delivers a more-than-adequate actioner. Depp and Rush are fun as always; it’s a shame they don’t spend much of the picture bouncing off of one another, because when they do, the movie comes alive. Cruz and McShane are welcome additions to the crew, but considering their immense talent, they feel somewhat wasted here (McShane isn’t allowed the opportunity to chew much scenery, or even be particularly villainous). And although the film is more streamlined than previous Pirates, the machinations of the plot do get twisted rather early on, and chug a little too mechanically. Considering this picture should be a fun adventure unencumbered by an obscene number of characters and countless moving pieces, there’s really no excuse. I wouldn’t necessarily call On Stranger Tides a comeback for the Pirates saga; more like a good-will reunion tour. It’s a reward for all the fans who stuck with the series through thick and thin. Considering the Keith Richards connection, it’s fitting that the series would return for one more go around, this time just playing the hits.

3/5

Better than number 3 (but not by much). For an action film, it felt very slow. I love captain Jack but he is really more of a supporting character than a lead role kinda guy. Disappointing but then I expected as much. I liked the mermaid concept - clever!

Another movie from Jack Sparrow and his mind bending antics, this pirate has something that the others don't have, a brain that has been starved of oxygen at some stage. This movie shows how we could have preceived the world of the pirates and what they got up to, fun and laughter with a touch of seriousness thrown in.

I was suprised, I had tipped that this would be yet another scripturally dysfunctional "Pirates" movie but it wasn't. It wasnt the lost plot that two and three was it was a stand alone effort that hooked into the genre and genus It was enjoyable on its own with good performances by the usual stars and fresh villians. There was a good amount of CGI and pyrotechnics. It was an enjoyable watch BUT not a stellar one.

The plot is even more nonsensical than the 3rd, the acting and writing is terrible, the action scenes are remarkably dull and derivative (and really, why watch a Pirates movie if the action scenes are no good?), and Johnny Depp seems to seriously lack something without Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom as his straight men. One star, because there were a few good jokes. I hope they give up after this, but I hear Depp has already signed on for a fifth...

More of captain Jack being Captain Jack, as with most a these movies in this series there appears to large gaps in the story which the viewer has to fill in, good specail effects and good acting with the usual laughs along the way, personally in think they should make this the last one so they don't over do it.

Always the adventure, POTC 4 is no different. This is an entertaining, fun movie, with the usual Captain Jack Sparrow mishaps, manipulations, and mischief. The love story between pirate and mermaid is sweet too, which adds a little more heart to the movie. Just an all-round entertaining flick!

A creative, different turn from the other 3 films. Loved the introduction to the mermaids scene, could have been a bit darker, but otherwise I really liked it. A few really funny parts but no where near as good as the first. I think we've seen enough Captain Jack Sparrow for it to predictable.

Bummer. Had hoped for better things from this. I guess what can you do with only two original cast members. Can see #5 in the wings with the mermaids and Cruz being left all open-ended. Def loved the mermaids, tho, great visuals.

It was a bit disappointing, when it finished we looked at each other and said well that was a bit of a non event, but having said that it was better than the second and third ones. We absolutely loved the first one, but once they left Orlando and Keira's characters stranded in "hell" in the ?second one the movies lost their heart. Johnny tries hard but I'm even getting over Captain Jack. Penelope was preggers during filming, she wasn't great in this, but then Keira is a very hard act to follow.

"What a great movie" shouts the kids......and thats about where this franchise of movies sits now. Actually, thats fine. It is light hearted good humour with a taste of dark fantasy. Well worth watching for the younger at heart. - enjoyable acting, Depp steals the show again.... Left the door open for another movie!

It's clear that they spend a fortune on these films, but aside from Geoffrey Rush, it's all a bit tired. Even Johnny Depp's drunkard rollicking gets boring after a time. Not a lot of pirate action either, it's more like an Indiana Jones movie. Penelope Cruz struggles to fill Keira Knightley's shoes as the token female as well. 2 and a bit hours equals 2 and a bit stars.

If you like Depp's timing for humor, it will not disapoint - if u r a 'Movie Critic', dont bother [leaving a comment!]. The plot sets the scene, builds tension in an easy viewing way, then leads the the inevidable climax... the dark plot is still fine for my kids.

If you are a Captain Jack Sparrow fan from the previous movies you will again love this next installment. . . . . . many of our favourite characters are back again but sadly a few have not returned, new characters introduced this time around are full of chrisma, drama, beauty and adventure, still not sure about mermaids with vampire tendencies! ! ! ! This movie seemed to have an easier storyline to follow, not as dark and ghostly as previous plots. Our whole family have been waiting for this one to be released and we are not disapointed, though maybe not for young ones as they loose interest very quickly.

This was such a poor excuse for a movie. And it has certainly done nothing good for the Pirates Of The Caribbean title it was given. I had to watch this all the way to the end, for the series once impeccable record of ensnaring films, though now I wish that I hadn't sat down. It took forever for the story line to really get under way, and once that happened, it didn't even stand on par with similar movies released around the same time. I don't recommend this to anyone looking for their next Pirates Of The Caribbean hit, as On Stranger Tides is far from it. With the few returning characters acting... off, this seems to be more than a two hour film designed to show us just how long it has been since the glory days of the original Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Falls Way too Short Quite possibly the worst movie of 2011. No one in this awful excuse (read money) for a movie seems interested and even though the previous movies were too looong (1 was 10min, 2 was 20min and 3 was 45min), this wears out its welcome within the first action set piece. Depp seems bored (that mischievous glimmer in his eye from the previous movies is missing totally), Cruz is totally wasted in this (what was she thinking), Blackbeard hardly appears, the set pieces are "run of the mill" and not engaging at all, and the usually rousing score is condemned to Zimmer re-splicing his previously awesome work. The main problem with this travesty is the villain. Blackbeard is legendary and should have been one of the best parts of this film, but here is demoted to just a bit part that doesn't even come across as interesting (and seriously, he's scary because of magic...come on). Even where the previous films incorporated magic, the "pirate-ing" still happened (by this I mean snappy dialogues, double crossing and plenty of "me-hearty" moments. The one good thing in this massive mess is the small cameo hidden in the middle of the first action set piece. The real tragedy of this movie is that there will most likely be another sequel (this made $1 billion world wide). For pirating adventures, avoid this and watch the previous ones, any Errol Flynn movie, Disney's Blackbeard's Ghost or even Cut-throat Island.
